Raymond Briggs' touching animated film, following a couple as they face the threat of nuclear war

This cautionary tale is both humorous and macabre in its consideration of one of the most horrific possibilities of modern life. When the Wind Blows is a story about love, tenderness, humanity and hope. Adapted by Raymond Briggs (The Snowman) from his best-selling book, When the Wind Blows features an original soundtrack by Roger Waters, and title song by David Bowie.

"Touching" is not a word I would use to describe this film. Bleak and depressing, yes.

Going by the photo this is a grown up version of The Snowman.

If you don't shed a tear at the end then you're one tough cookie

If you make it through this, try Nevil Shute's On the Beach. The final chapters I could only manage a page at a time

Whimsical tale of an elderly couple who have retired to the countryside. Great movie for all the family.

You could watch Watership Down after with the bunnies, the young kids would love it.

I'm sure we were shown a film of this at school in the late 70s/early 80s it wasn't much like the snowman to my recollection :/

Shame BBC has never shown Threads again. Must be room for it on BBC4 surely.

If you really insist on traumatising your children, save £1.99 by just getting them to watch the news instead.

Freaked the hell out of me when i watched this as a kid in the 80s.
Not long after watching this, i woke up early one morning, looked out of the window and saw a really extraordinary red sky, and convinced myself that a bomb had been dropped...absolutely true story.
Clearly the red sky was just some bad weather coming in, but my young mind feared the worst.

One of the scariest shows I ever watched not quite what my parents were expecting after the Snowman

We were shown another film at school on the same theme but the other one was a documentary. I bet it was Threads! I think that was even worse
