I have to vote hot because it's a great price for a CPU that will games practically identically to the 5800X and be more than adequately powerful for almost all purposes a typical user would have at home. If you are still on Zen 1 or Zen 2 still this is a brilliant upgrade. The single threaded performance is as good as any Zen 3 and the multicore performance is around that of a 3700X (edited)

Without an existing system is it worth going AM5? I'm way out of touch with these things

If I was building from scratch I would advise you to go AM5 unless you are on a budget where there are some great AM4 solutions.
