Yeah I’ve seen this the last few days. Yes it’s cheap but the description put me off. It’s labelled as Opened-never used but then continues to say

Refurbished Official Apple TV 4K which has been checked & repacked, comes with original accessories, may show minor signs of previous handling or use. This unit also benefits from a full 6 month Warranty.

This isn’t a 12 month warranty so misleading (edited)

Edited to now show 6 month warranty. Thanks

What are the thoughts on these? Significantly cheaper than gen 2/3 but not sure if they will be rubbish?

I have this model and have never felt the need to upgrade. It supports all the same streaming services, 4K, Dolby Vision and Atmos, HDR10, etc. Newer ones will be better for games but who really plays games on an Apple TV? HDMI 2.1 in the newer one might be useful if your TV supports it. This is only 802.11ac WiFi but that’s fast enough for any streaming service around today.

This one also doesn’t support the FaceTime features in the latest tvOS, so that might be the start of these ones getting left behind. We’ll see. (edited)

Really good as a dedicated zwift portal
    binned-it's avatar
Yup I’ve got one of these in the garage just for Zwift and a new model in the house for everything else (fyi no performance different between them for Zwift)

If anyone is overly bothered by the remote that comes with this then you can buy the 2nd gen remote brand new separately here for £32 and have an Apple TV 4K with the latest remote (other than USB-C) for £92, saving you £77 in total compared to buying the 3rd gen. If you don't need the features of the gen2 and above listed in various comments below then I think it's a pretty good deal.

Infuse for tvOS, iOS, MacOS supports the following protocols if this helps anyone. Also supports WebDav, Direct IP via HTTP/HTTPS, Plex, Emby, Jellyfin etc.

Just received mine today and although a good price, I’m very disappointed that the unit is battered. Scratches and a dent on the remote and scratches all over the unit. I have messaged the seller and await there response.

    Open never used 🫣
  7. yimpster's avatar
mine also pretty scuffed. not really "opened-never used" condition. am i wrong to complain about this?
    RuddyHandshake's avatar
    Author
Certainly not wrong to complain about it if you are not happy with it. Some others have commented on here saying they got a partial refund if you message the seller. Might be worth doing this or if you are really unhappy with it then return it. It's worth noting that it's only cosmetic and won't impact the device in anyway, I don't even see my Apple TV.
  8. Thislife79's avatar
Worth mentioning eBay reviews mentioning definitely not "opened, never used." Judgment call as to whether worth paying extra to get a new item with full 2 year warranty and no marks/refurbed/mistreated returns...
  9. ja111es's avatar
Thanks for posting- I have been thinking about getting the new model but this looks to be a good deal. Be interested to hear people’s thoughts on this older model or if it’s worth paying extra for the new model? Currently using a Fire Stick which is slow and frequently crashes… thanks

Biggest difference between Gen 1 and Gen 2 is the lack of ability to use for FaceTime calls with Gen 1.

can you download apps from the appstore with this model?

    Yes
  11. drsleep0000's avatar
Any need for this if you have a Roku and Fire stick?
    bensbb's avatar
The app selection is the same. For years you needed an ATV to use the iTunes store but now the apple TV app is on other devices it's less of an issue, the only real appreciable difference I have found is you get "iTunes extras" on the iTunes store (basically like special features on a DVD), these get stripped off on my Roku TV with ATV app. I would say unless you really like the interface etc don't bother.
  12. tfish's avatar
Can you get Youtube on these?

Will plex on atv passthrough uncompressed atmos or do I need the shield? getting conflicting info online.
    RuddyHandshake's avatar
    Author
Yes it does, however look into an app called Infuse if you get into the Apple ecosystem. It plays absolutely anything and supports every audio codec. I use Plex via Infuse on my Apple products to play high bitrate 4K media (100Mbps+) and Infuse direct plays everything. Plex app tends to stutter with these files.

EDIT: I was misinformed, please see below (edited)

What’s the reliability like on Airplay? My LG tv’s airplay is now really frustrating to actually get working and then so unreliable when it does work
    RuddyHandshake's avatar

I use AirPlay for audio to my Sonos speakers every single day and I’ve never had any issues. Once connected it stays connected until either the Apple TV gets switched off completely or the Sonos speaker gets unplugged or does an update. So generally they stay connected for weeks on end without issues. In terms of video, I’ve only ever cast video once or twice as I use an iPhone and all of my photos and videos are accessed on the built in app with no quality loss.
  16. bendanuk's avatar
I have gen 1 and gen2. I can’t say I’ve noticed any significant performance differences so gen 1 at this price is really good value
  17. alexmurphy01's avatar
Got this on a bit of a whim last time it was this price. Very glad I did, way better that the smart tv - and seamless connecting with the MacBook Pro too.

This is great timing, was looking to get one of these for the bedroom and was about to pay full price for the latest one. This one will do nicely. Heat added. Thanks

Heads up that there is now a Nordvpn tvOS app which is a game changer on these. Previously had to mess about with smartdns or set up a vpn on your router.

Can someone help me? I have an Nvidia shield which is a great device but my partner would prefer an easier device to use. Does atv integrate all the streaming provider films into the films tab? E.g. if I had Disney, netflix and Amazon and I install and setup the apps, do the films then all list as one under the atv movies tab?
Does atv have audio pass through?
As my partner has quite a few iTunes films I understand iTunes extras are available, which is an advantage.
Otherwise for someone who owns both the shield and atv 4k - what other pros are there? My partner has an apple phone so there is loads of integration for sure.
    RuddyHandshake's avatar
    Author
Yes, in terms of apps it will work exactly as you mentioned if you use the “TV” app within the device. It logs progress between the different services (Netflix, iPlayer, Disney+ etc) and shows in “up next”. However you can also use the service app directly. Hopefully the pics clear this up for you.

I've just installed 2 HomePod minis in my bedroom. Anyone now if these can be used as speakers with this model, or do I need a newer model? A steal if it's the case
    RuddyHandshake's avatar
    Author
Yes, I currently do this with my Sonos speakers via AirPlay. You'll definitely be able to do it with the HomePods. My setup is TV sound + Sonos One SL via AirPlay. It's very simple to setup and once it's done it will stay connected until you unplug/switch off either the Apple TV or the speakers. Hopefully the picture makes sense!

I have the Shield Pro, I've noticed with my new TV is has judder. The judder is fixed in Plex by ticking a box, but all other apps have it.

People have recommended Apple TV. But they say the sound isn't as good. Yet they say video output is much better.

    I'm in two minds.

    RuddyHandshake's avatar

No you can’t as there is no USB port on Apple TV. You’d have to use a media server of some kind such as Plex, Emby etc

Do the Apple TV remotes need line of sight to work? I’m wanting to hide the box behind my TV. Also is there any way to sideload YouTube without ads on an Apple TV (and without paying for a premium subscription)
    Burger_it's avatar
Doesn’t need line of site and fairly sure no for this one. Very, very old ones could be jail broken.

also, Apple tv get the premium, refined apps. You fer features on the Apple version of the apps you dont get on android tv.

Got mine, it had a few scuff marks, not too bad especially for the price. But I now realise it's missing HDMI ARC. This would allow the sound from my sons Nintendo to go to the TV and be passed on to the Apple TV and on to a pair of homePods (but perhaps that's a good thing lol).
    RuddyHandshake's avatar
    Author
I didn't release that it didn't support ARC or eARC, I thought as it supported HDMI 2.0 that it would be a given. I don't actually use it though. I'm surprised no one else has commented about this to be honest. More info here: support.apple.com/en-…290

What's this like for Apple Music with lossless music and Dolby Atmos?

I currently have a Nvidia Shield and Series X but I plan on upgrading my speaker setup in the future and literally the only reason I'm considering getting an Apple TV is for the above to use now that I have a Merantz Cinema 60.

Mine was in no way ‘opened- never used’. That description they use on eBay needs to change. Works fine though so not bothered really (although the remote on this model is a bit of a pain to use). (edited)
