Some may say you can't do much with this laptop. This is not true, I've used these specs up until 2 days ago.
At £90, it is good value, IMO. At £72 with the code (as per the comments, but it seems to work only for credit orders), this seems to be outstanding value. It will be ok for small children as a first laptop, would also tick boxes for school work, and would be fine for Internet use.

BLC £5 off. 5% off if you use the app for the first time. Some other codes may work too. I've managed to bring it down to £85 with delivery, but I've tried various codes and I do not know which one worked :). Had the laptop for 10 min in my basket, but I decided I shouldn't buy not needed stuff just because the price is good.
    Voted hot! (edited)

I disagree with part of what you’ve said.

This is NOT good as a first laptop for a child. It is slow and unresponsive, especially when doing any sort of update.

If you have this amount to spend on a child, get a Fire HD 10 tablet when they are on offer, or otherwise look to a £300ish Ryzen 5+ laptop which will do so much more and be perfect for a young person. (edited)

£72 after using code 015. Brilliant. Thanks OP

Yes did same and topcashback £3.62 back all helps I ordered it too

Have something similar, unless you're take a chance with some of the lighter versions of W10 it'll run silly slow and drive you nuts.
  4. chischis's avatar
If these had 8GB RAM they would be HOT IMHO. Ideal for all the basic uses. But I'll be surprised if the 4GB is upgradeable... with only 4GB, Windows on an SSD is useable but won't do anything beyond the basics well.
  5. RLC59's avatar
in the specs it says 128gb ssd then under that it says hdd NOT included.
    The_Guru's avatar
That's cos Ssd and hdd are 2 different things
  6. the__cat's avatar
    It's a 6th-gen i3 so there's no official possibility of upgrading to Windows 11.

Also, spec says it has a mini-HDMI port, so will need a different HDMI cable than most have lying around if a second monitor is required.
    Pondlife's avatar
To emphasize this it's an 8 year old i3, where have they been hiding them.
  7. Nujol's avatar
Noooo…. Schools had these from the government during Covid…… from experience they are painfully slow and unproductive to use. And say goodbye to even using it if it’s checking for / downloading / applying updates, literally grinds to an unusable halt.

sounds like the processor is as poor as Atom/Celeron

Could someone let me know what audio drivers this things uses. Already run into some problems.
    s2onius's avatar
I don't know if this will help, but took the below from msinfo32 on my one which i've just opened and switched to Win 10 Home. Happy to pull the drivers and upload them for you somewhere if that would be of use?

    Hope it helps.

Remember, there is a TON of fantastic lightweight software for Windows- all FREE. Machines like this are not good at the dreadful software aimed at 'normies'. But for the informed Windows user, who understands the history of Windows and the free software community, these insanely cheap devices are great for everything BUT moderate to heavy browsing.

If your intended use is modern social media apps, and full on browsing with no desire to use better option, AVOID. These apps are coded to the worst 'standards, and you want a better machine to compensate for lousy code. If you are a clueless Windows user, you need a better set of specs- 8GB or RAM at least and a better CPU.
    Nujol's avatar
I partially agree but these machine regularly grind to a halt anyway just running Windows
  11. Moss.b's avatar
Dont waste your money. I have an i5 similar age and it's really slow sometimes like even the cursor has lag lol and all I do is browse. (edited)
    mmdemm's avatar
@miss.b: had precisely the same problem. Tried everything, reinstalled even windows and was prepared to throw it in the bin. I had a 509gb crucial SSD in it. I tested everything including the SSD and found no issues. On a whim I decided to replace the SSD. I got the cheapest one on Amazon (1Tb about £30) and cloned the old SSD. Amazingly is solved my problem, the computer is now as fast as new?
  12. mudcat's avatar
Tricky.... Heat for sure for the discount and as a 'brand new' present as first laptop for children or basic use (internet browsing, office and simple apps).
This strikes as me a good deal overall, especially if bought on credit card for additional 'warranty' rights, as wouldn't trust it to last long before hardware and build quality issues.
A secondary school education child etc will likely have much higher expectations for graphics and overall performance; in which case would look to go second-hand for a bit more cost but relatively much higher end specs from 2-3 years ago but also Windows 11 compatible.

There are no "additional 'warranty' rights" on this (nor any other) sub-£100-per-item credit purchase.
It should qualify for maximum 120 days chargeback opportunity, but that would not warrant (sic) a purchase exclusively for such a minimal potential benefit.

It has a micro SD slot to upgrade storage which is good, saves having to take it apart to swap out the HDD, very good for first laptop and just the deal I've been looking for, thanks OP!

This is essentially a Windows 10 machine. BUT you say I can install Windows 11 with workarounds. Sure you can, but when Microsoft offer a major update such as 22H2 it will check the CPU requirements again and you can't upgrade. So you have to do some fiddling to upgrade, then if you do get an in place upgrade working there is no guarantee that you will be able to keep your files and settings and often this is greyed out. Meaning you might as well have backed up, formatted and reinstalled with the latest version from the latest ISO file.

So it's not impossible to run Windows 11 but major updates can become troublesome. This is the perfect machine to install Linux on but there are caveats to that, I will discuss them if anyone is interested but no point currently. Mainly just which software you want to run, nothing else really. (edited)
    The_Guru's avatar
Windows 10 it is then. Or maybe windows 95!🤪

Convert to normal Windows 10 (or install from scratch if it will not convert).
    Install AtlasOS -
    atlasos.net/

Aimed at gamers, but works just fine for speeding up old machines for general use.
    It'll be much quicker.

Be sure to read up on what features have been removed (some are being added back) in case they remove something you really need (unlikely if you're buying this anyway, lol).

Apparently these have M.2 slots on them so adding a 1tb drive for £35 might give this the boost it needs to be usable. Shame the ram doesn’t look upgradable
    Starbuck26's avatar
Thanks for this info. Where did you read this and any idea how to get to the slot?
  18. Da3s0n's avatar
Anyone found out or seen a video/tutorial around upgrading it yet? Someone said they have M.2 drive but I've searched and can't find anything. I don't want to take mine apart to void warranty and to find out it's not true? TIA.
    WiltonWarrior's avatar
Mine came today and I am quite impressed with it. I tried taking the back cover off but I couldn't get it fully off. I just couldn't get the cover to come off around the hinges so gave up as I'd caused a bit of damage. Thankfully it still works after I put it back together. Anyway, long story short, I saw the m.2 drive in there although I couldn't get full access to it.

I believe these laptops would be excellent for bringing along on vacations. They could serve well for reserving your upcoming hotel while you're in your present hotel room.

I love the fact that you don't do stuff on your Mobile Phone (which makes you a boomer I guess) but reserve your next hotel while you are in the previous hotel (making you a free spirit). A child of the swinging 60s?

    Linux compatible?
    matthewwaldron's avatar
Can't see any reason it won't be - I was going to try ChromeOS Flex on it as the specs are comparable to a Chromebook
  21. barrjamy's avatar
Interesting, though hard to say what it would be like to use... Though i3, 4gig if ram doesn't sound like much, I was rocking laptops worse than that not all that many years ago.

Personaly if that was my budget and needed a laptop and didn't want to go second hand, this actually seems pretty decent for the money. Would be tempted to slap a lighter weight OS, particularly with the tiny hard drive. But windows should be fine for light browsing, using some office apps and watching 720 vids.. maybe even play some peggle

That said is I could afford about 100 more would probably go for a refurbished Lenovo ex business laptop. But depends on the budget.

All in all it is a lot of hardware for the money!

Edit: just notice some conflicting specs... Proceed with caution and do your research! (edited)

    UPDATE:
It's been less than 4 days and my Teenage daughter has smashed the screen!
It was in a hard case and in a rucksack - she has no idea how it happened!!!

I can use it headless for Linux training and the like, or lob an HDMI monitor on it !!!

    Such a shame ...

So.... the screen is wafer thin or ... something else!!

Ideal for OBD stuff in the car? And for kids especially I'd say.
  27. kalico's avatar
For that money it can sit in the kitchen for recipes and such like. Better than an 8 inch Alexa.

That's also what i'm thinking. I'm just considering the usefulness of keyboard + trackpad vs. touchscreen.
  28. Starbuck26's avatar
Just arrived. Just upgraded out of Windows 10 S and performing updates.

Initial thoughts: Decent build quality. Heavier than I expected. Screen opens without lifting the base which is nice. Trackpad is fine but use tap to click. Physical click on the pad is very loud. Keyboard is a bit rattly but pleasant to use. Decent travel. Appears to have a good screen good angles not very bright but ok. Speaker is mono unless I’ve got a bad unit.
    Starbuck26's avatar
Speakers are stereo but both on the right side of the keyboard which is weird.

Overall very impressed for the price. All updated and bloat removed. Chrome is snappy. 4k vids are smooth in Youtube and games stream fine from Xbox. Will try a few games to download and let you know.

Im guessing the ram is soldered like someone mentioned earlier can upgrade memory via the m2 slot
  32. ShamblesX's avatar
Well, seeing as it's OOS doesn't really matter what it runs...

It's an Intel chipset and not ARM, which is handy for someone who needs a cheap laptop but won't be limited to the restrictions of ARM... e.g. Apple iTunes!
  34. The_Guru's avatar
Any way of changing the Ssd? Or is it soldered?

I don't own the laptop, but I would say its about 99% certain it will be soldered.

This is a basic laptop and doubt it will be upgradable.
