This is a water boiler after 2yrs in a medium hard water area, I had to buy a new boiler so took the old one apart, you can see the state of the inside as I was trying to de scale it, they aren’t meant to be opened, I was seeing if I could keep it as a spare but 24/7 of boiling water just trashes it and the spare boiler or even the spare taps are a horrendous price, cheaper to buy a whole unit!

From outside it looked shiny and wonderful but when unbolted and pulled apart OMG, and as the limescale builds the less efficient and more expensive they become to run.

DON'T FORGET to change your filter every 6 months, costs £45 - £125 per filter, so thats' another £100 expenditure per year carbon-purity-filters , Costco £70 each so another £140 per year (£125 from Fohen!) costco.co.uk/Hom…006

Anyway loads of review and advice on the internet from people who have never owned one or just tried one as a demo, you make your own minds up

Costs based on 34p a kWh, info care of getenergysavvy getenergysavvy.info/pos…sts

NO account is taken into the change of filters every 6 months (£140yr?), so that shows the lack of experience of people that have never owned one, add the price of the unit, fitting and the fact that just after 2yrs the boiler is likely to need to be changed unless you want to be drinking from the crud filled boiler, then the figures below are a pure waste of time and meaningless and the cost of the electricity the least of your problems!

Your poor wife/partner, with such analysis you would likely not own a dishwasher, vacuum cleaner, washing machine. Why have a tv when you can listen to the neighbours arguing?
    Ridiculous.
BTW my Insinkerator filters are £20 each for cheapest compatible ones; as you say, change every six months. Also, my original boiler is still going after 5 years in the south east which is a v hard water area. (edited)

It costs a fair amount of money to run so go in with your eyes open, there is no magic, it is keeping the water at 90 degrees 24/7. I have one and the only reason I eep mine on is because the hot tub at £4 k a year electricity made it an absolute bargain. As mentioned on here they boiler container is insulated and the water is kept hot so not starting from cold like a kettle but you pay for that! A kettle is WAY cheaper to run but of course you don't get the instant boiling water. This is a luxury if you can afford it, no good buying it and not using it so be sure before you spend your hard earned cash, would I get one again, YES!

You are paying for convenience, and remember if you are in a hard water area the lime scale builds up like hell because the water stays in there, there is no way of clearing it out it's a new boiler!

It depends on how often you boil your kettle in a day doesn't it?

These are very easy to install, if you have a dishwasher or washing machine no doubt you will already have electrics there so a spur can be added, plumbing is minimal, you may need to cut a shelf slightly for the boiler part depending on what type of cupboard its going in, beware that if you are in a hard water area, that kills these little boilers as the element inside gets clogged up and no way of cleaning it.

As this is on constantly its like keeping a kettle boiled all the time so not cheap to run these days, BUT if you have a wifi socket fitted you can set a timer to turn it on and off at night and or during certain periods of the day when not using it, also useful if heading off on holiday for a couple of weeks and realised you had forgot to turn it off, just go on your app and shut it down.

    May help someone.

Do you need to be careful about amp rating of the wifi plug when using with one of these?

Have a fohen tap for the last 3 years. They're OK. Hottest setting is 98 degrees but it honestly is no where near that and drinks go cold significantly quicker than a standard kettle or a quooker. Had the boiler unit changed and still the same.

Personally wouldn't recommend quooker are far superior.
    Spud211's avatar
    Spud211
Would agree that Quooker are definitely superior - however they are also 4 times the price for the equivalent, so I would expect and hope so
These Fohen taps do indeed get mixed reviews, mostly due to the boiler units - but still it's a good price for them, and if you are one of the lucky ones who gets a good unit, they seem to be pretty decent. At least buying from Costco its a pretty simple returns process if needed, and once installed...swapping out for another brand if needed in the future should be pretty simple.

Wow, I just went from "I'm defintley buying this" to "hmm maybe i don't want a large constant running boiler"

Thanks for the heads up community :-)

Also, their reviews aren't that great on trustpilot, apparently a very difficult company to deal with. (edited)

Check the post below, you pay for convenience and don't get me wrong it's great BUT people need to be fully aware of what they are getting into, it isn't all roses, especially if either your tap (and the handles / washers are not serviceable) or boiler goes wrong out of warranty!

Anyone have any idea how much this would be to install? (edited)
    kencol's avatar

Depends where your electric supply is, but I'd say somewhere between 1 and 2 hundred.

They don't get out of bed for less than 60 quid these days.

This seems a great price and gets decent reviews...I might have to pick one up. They look really easy to install too - I just need to figure out if I can safely get power to the boiler unit and if so, I think these are a DIY install in about an hour.

    • Saves Time, Energy & Money

Can anyone explain to me how this can save energy? It constantly keeps 2.4l of water at say 90°C. How it's supposed to be cheaper in comparison to boiling the required amount of water in the kettle exactly when I need it?
    randomusername7605281935's avatar
    randomusername7605281935
Maybe because with this you might only use the amount you need unlike with a kettle where you generally boil a bunch more than you need. Most kettles have the minimum line at what would be 2 cups so if i make 1 cup then it's 1 cup of wasted heat. And unlike this kettles aren't insulated so the heat drops down to room temp quick, whereas with water heaters(like this i assume) they have super thick insulation and even leaving them off over night can still leave you with very hot water in the morning. So it doesn't actually use much energy at all to keep the water at whatever temperature once its at that heat.

Butttt this is just in comparison with making tea which is quite an insignifigant amount of water. Just running hot water in general like when doing the washing up this will be signifigantly more expensive than if you have a gas boiler for hot water. I'm sure their save energy claim is in very limited scenarios, possibly even comparing it to other electrically heated water systems. (edited)

Crikey. I have a Fohen one in the shed waiting to be installed.

Really not sure I should now. It's really in the balance on cost (which I can afford) versus actual benefit (mostly that of not having a kettle cluttering up the worktops).

Had a boiling tap one for five years, I can assure you they are brilliant. No more noisy boiling, no more waiting, no more crushing my weak wrists filling big heavy kettle, no more clutter…better than you can imagine!

You seem to be struggling with any good reasons to justify the extra costs of the barely boiling tap.

Is 98 degrees not too little for a good cup of tea? For black tea, water should be boiling
    Gadgetdeals's avatar
    Gadgetdeals
90 - 98, In order to draw the best flavour out of the tea the water must contain oxygen, this is reduced if the water is boiled more than once which these hot water taps continuously do, so not good for the real perfect cup of tea, 80 for Green tea. (edited)

There seemed to be no energy usage increase with my insinkerator hot tap. Switched and used a kettle for a couple of days and even boiling only what I needed the energy meter showed about the same cost per day. If you use litres and litres and make single cups a tea then you might have different results but I think like a hot water cylinder for a home, they are really are well insulated so it's NOT constantly on. I here it run every now and again to maintain the temp. I also have it on timer so that overnight and also a few hours in the day it's not running at all (good for maintaining its life too).

The electricity use is the least of your problems and has ben clearly laid out in a chart in this thread, you will also find if you don't use the correct filters or don't change them then the flow reduces as crud builds up in the filters, it also builds up in the water cylinder chamber making it less efficient over time, see my images, so all this they are perfect is a load of bull, yes they are great but at a cost, would you keep that cruddy boiler after 2yrs of non stop use, just because it looks shiny outside doesn't mean its not full of crud inside, if that was a kettle and you could see inside would you boil water and drink a cup of tea from it? thought not! With that and using cheap fake filters or not changing your filters you are heading for a new boiler.

I would look on these as a 2 year product, write off the cost over the 2yrs and change the boiler, you may find a boiler is the same price as this kit so maybe buy 2 kits and that will last 4yrs as the boiler is dead easy to switch over plus you get a spare set of taps just in case because if the start to leak around the handles they are not serviceable so its a whole new tap that costs more than a boiler! This is something to look at if your are drilling into a new or expensive worktop otherwise in 2yrs you face looking at a dud system sitting there or have it removed and a blanking plate. Yes you may get a few more years out of it but do you really want to drink from this? and it will be less efficient, so head out of the sand and face reality! Yes I bought 2 kits, yes I think they are great.

Boiler after 2 yrs in Thames Water area medium hard water, looks wonderful outside until you unbolt it and strip it apart and find THIS inside! What can you expect after it has boiled non stop for 2yrs plus 24/7?

    Is the cold water filtered?
    androidavis's avatar

I think the cold and hot is coming from your mains water supply and house hot water supply. The other tap that is linked to the heated storage tank under the sink cupboard (that comes with this tap) is keeping hot water that was filtered
