I’m on the lookout for something for my daughter to use for homework and also Roblox, would this do the trick?

    Yes

I need a 13" laptop for my studies... just to get it right, i can expand the memory and hard drive? also anyone know what the battery life is like? i need something that will last at least at least 5/6/7 hours

Expansion is fine and easy on this. 5-7 hours battery you might be pushing your luck, even when reasonably new about 4-5 hours was doable.

This any good for the price or is there anything better in this price range? Mainly required to use Office on etc.

It's only 8GByte. You would need to check whether that is upgradeable and how much that would cost. It has twice the pass mark of the one that I am typing on - which also has 8GB and an SSD of the same size. I regularly max out that amount of memory and my processor seems stuck on 100% a lot of the time. Hence me checking out this one. I wouldn't swap it with one having just twice the pass mark. Not good enough when paying a bit more I can get 6x it.

I haven't checked out the battery size and whether it is easily replaceable (if that matters to you). I also haven't gone looking for reviews - because it just doesn't have enough processing power for me. I usually have Word, Excel, Opera and Edge open concurrently and am running on internal plus external monitor.
The lack of a LAN connector (I know, I could use an adapter) is also a concern to me (but may not be to you).

I think that you would need to factor in the cost of replacing the battery pack (if you intend to use it off the grid) plus more memory plus a larger SSD.

    IPS or TN?

These have IPS panels on the full HD. I've never seen a 7300 with a TN panel.

I managed to get hold of the 2018 dell 7390 with i7, full hd, 16gb ram, 512gb ssd windows 11 pro and with original dell charger for £170. Must say it’s a good laptop for the money for basic tasks, speakers are tinny, so not ideal for listening to music, only if you have Bluetooth speakers to connect the laptop with. Boots up with in 6-10seconds. Only annoying issue is the material used on the laptop, everything seems to stick to it, constantly wiping clean. (edited)

I think that's more to do with the websites you visit rather than composite materials used to build the laptop.

Take note that this is an 8th generation 4-core CPU built on an aged 14nm node, from late 2018.

£150 is rather expensive for an old used laptop. The original price of £264 is an absolute joke. (edited)

I have a laptop with an i7 4c/8t processor from 2014 that still performs like a champ paired with 16GB of ram so i don't think that's necessarily an issue for general use tbf

I recently got a 7400 2 in 1 with the same processor, ram and SSD.

Runs web, office apps etc... really slickly. Nice machines.

Same here...runs a Citrix desktop with teams flawlessly. Very happy with mine for the £155 it cost me.

I said before I don't like this seller and many others here have had a similar problem with them, that aside, this is a good price for this system and it's arguably one of the best modern Dell laptops they've made - it's got lots of expansion (2 RAM slots), easily accessible internals, spare parts are easy to come by and very few common faults. As someone else mentioned, the carbon black one can go sticky over longer periods of time so if you are given the choice, the silver aluminium variant is better in that respect. They are durable and robust machines.

On the subject of the seller I’ve had 2 really good quality laptops from them and the 3rd I ordered was a bit less quality that described, however after discussing with them
they sent out a courier to pickup the laptop and offered me a refund or a replacement, I chose the replacement and it arrived with the courier (at no extra cost). The replacement was excellent. Can’t fault them.

I want something mainly to do zoom and teams meetings, that would be reliable, and pretty fast. Would this be a good option?

    Thanks for any help!
    plewis00's avatar
Yes, it’s fine for that. Teams might require more RAM as it’s a memory hog but that’s a cheap upgrade.

I've currently got my laptop up for sale at £175 but now I see why it isn't selling if they are available for this price. Mines a dell 12.5" FHD 1920x1080 Touch Screen with the i5 7300u processor and 16gb ram. It's a brilliant little device but I simply don't use it. I can't justify selling it for 150 so I'll probably just keep it for the kids. These dell laptops are great quality.

Dual-core machines and 7th gen and earlier have taken a tumble in price since quad-cores have become very accessible and Windows 11 is properly supported. You should keep it though if you're not selling, they are still very usable. I have an older Surface Book (6th Gen i7, 16GB RAM, dGPU) and it's still pretty nice to use, never really feels excessively slow.
