Do people install this themselves or pay for a professional installation?
    MaybeMaverick's avatar
It depends. I've already got a smart thermostat all set up(new build) and it's just a case of swapping the thermostat and heatlink. So its about 20mins worth of work.
I asked around for quotes and everyone has quoted me £100-£150 to do it.
In the end I watched a few YouTube videos made a cuppa and did itself.

Can anyone confirm that this works with both a combi-boiler system and one with a separate hot water tank?
The spec seems to suggest this, but I always thought different units were required for each type?
    jellytotz's avatar
Yes it does. Wiring manual confirms both too

can this work with a oil boiler, upstairs/downstairs & water ?
    fishmaster's avatar
I've read Hive is better for oil boilers. If I find the link I'll post it

"I would say Hive is a better option, Nest is OpenTherm which makes it more expensive and OpenTherm will not work with oil, and also Nest does not link to TRV's so does not control as well."

    community.screwfix.com/thr…52/

Also I'm not anywhere near an expert or knowleageable with boilers etc so that is just what I've read, other people should be able to advise you better (edited)

Good thermostat but can't control tvrs

    This or tado? Advice please
    SPLE22's avatar
I have the full tado system. Just make sure if you get wireless you get the EU receiver as that is Opentherm.

I have 7 smart TRVs and they work really well.. the temperature isnt totally accurate but it gives you ability to call for heat in ANY single room. Which tbh is gonna save you money

I was about to say Trustpilot is mainly just for moaners, but Nest in particular gets absolutely torn to shreds here. I never had a need to ever contact support which is probably just as well. Mine worked fine for 5-6 years that I had it. I was hoping to add another to my current house which is gas. The support is definitely concerning.

Had mine for about 5 years. Great bit of kit. Me er had any issues with. I set my own schedule and works as it should. Used on a combi boiler and also a system boiler with hot water tank.

Did professional installation, easily one of the best purchases we have made last few years. Can be on holiday and turn heating back on as you're flying home

We’re planning to create a 2-zone system in the house with some underfloor heating. Am I right in thinking we need two of these?
    AlphaFox's avatar
    Author
I think you can't use 2 units at the same time unless you have 2 seperate boilers. But I could be wrong.
  17. Wayno1979's avatar
Ordered thanks, had to close app and turn off Adguard and both codes came through after a few mins

We have an old Worcester Greenstar Highflow combi boiler. Would the Best work with it and is it difficult to install? Thanks!
    AlphaFox's avatar

It should work with it. For installation, i would recommend a plumber. Should not cost too much. (edited)

Keep clear for now if your thinking of using with HomeKit via homebridge - API is a bit flakey now and no sign of a fix coming.

Does this run off a battery instead of always mains powered? Also if I already have one and want this to use as a zone 2 is that easily possible?

Might be silly question but I don't know much about these things if I have already old model thermostat at home (like the one from the photo), do I need to install nest heat link for that 3rd gen google nest thermostat? Cause that looks like way more to do rather than just replacing thermostat. Thanks in advance 51417588-PusDB.jpg

Would like to know this too

Hello can, can you remotely turn on off the heating for example when coming back from a holiday?
    robcrossley's avatar
Yes. There is a phone app.
  26. daviet123's avatar
How much did people pay for installation and has anyone had one installed on a Potterton Performa 28 Boiler with one of these thermostats?

    51418228-j7khv.jpg
    zorsefoal's avatar
I have a potteron titanium and started pulling it apart to do the Tado earlier today. I'd say it's relatively easy if you have enough understanding of school physics to know colours mean things and you should turn the circuit off.

Why did you buy a second? I’m contemplating so there’s one upstairs and down. Does it bring any benefits?
  30. Rawlo77's avatar
Had mine a few years now.  Paid £60 for install, but my wiring didn’t have a ‘C’ wire so it is plugged into the mains all the time.  Not a big problem but would prefer it on the wall where the old thermostat was.
    twistedpixel's avatar
Ask a sparky but I’m almost certain you didn’t need a c wire. My understanding is that you can bridge/jump the live to the common terminal and then use the existing thermostat L and N (which should be disconnected from the live circuit) as the low voltage wires (I believe the furthest 2 terminals on the heat link). That’s how my last house was wired up and each NEST replaced a 2-wire dumb thermostat and those 2 wires delivered the 12V supply for the thermostat.

Speak to a sparky as I’m pretty sure it can be done unless there’s something I’m missing about your setup.
  31. twistedpixel's avatar
Can you still link these to HomeKit via HomeBridge/HOOBS/HomeAssistant or did the recent shutdown of Works Woth Nest kill that?
  32. jjklubklass's avatar
sorry, not up on these things, does this take over from the one on my wall? (see below) if so, can i install it myself?
    51418607-GLc9q.jpg
    uchman365's avatar
Get over to YouTube, there's a lot of guides on how to install the different models if you don't want to pay for a professional installer. Depending on the setup you already have, it could be very easy or you may need a pro.

BEWARE Poor reviews, several saying WIFI chip only last a few years then its broken, apparantly its a very common issue

Had my Copper Colour Nest 3rd gen plugged into a Worcester Bosch 37Cdi for about 4-5 years.

Has Worked perfectly replacing the existing thermostat using existing wires in hallway. No issues with wifi and has worked perfectly and also works with Alexa as well. The rotating dial and very large display ( orange when heating ) very non techie friendly and the auto display when walking past is great.

Only thing that lets it down is the schedule only has 1 hour intervals where would have preferred 30 minute slots.

I paid £230 ( supply and fit ) using existing wires and that included heatlink in the box. ( totally worth it ) (edited)
  36. pateo's avatar
Wouldn't touch it if I was paid to use it, absolute pile of
This was automatically installed by boiler installer, had electrician a few days later remove it and back to original mechanical timer. Nest just did what it wanted to do ie not fit for purpose, switching off heating when it should of been on and switched on during early hours when should of been off. Just did opposite of what we wanted (edited)

I’ve had 6 in my home for over 7 years now - works perfectly fine.

turning the learning off - and just set a schedule of you prefer.

    Debating this or Tado
    Spoise's avatar
I have tado and I can highly recommend it. Used this one at a Airbnb once and couldn't get on with it. Suppose it's what you're used to, but I find turning on special parts of the house when needed with tado pretty useful.
  39. Vegasphil's avatar
These are genuinely good. Will certainly save you money over using a traditional thermostat or only radiator TRVs.

51420468-sBnBv.jpgOur bathroom has underfloor warming and the installers put in this thermostat. It is awful and simply doesn’t work for us. Would I be able to swap it out for this nest?
