This is the M1 Max. Fantastic deal again. With that memory and HD size I'd challenge anyone to spot the performance difference between this and an M3 unless you're editing 8k videos

Is this 100% the MAX and not the pro ? Costa says pro
    n707301's avatar
Definitely the Max - the Pro cannot do 64gb ram - google the model number.

The website has updated to confirm it is the M1 Max

Seems like Costco have posted the information wrong as this in infact an M1 Max chip, rather than a Pro based on the exact product code.

Fantastic price again for a pretty much top spec MacBook, probably equivalent to a 4k 2023 MacBook Pro so a great deal

Great deal. Interestingly I would have got this in a instant a few days back (had I seen it) but I got the m1 max 16 instead. However have to say now that I am a 16 convert - so glad I didn't see it before! Saying that, I don't need to regularly work on trains or planes, which would be different.

just want to mention the heat throttle issue on the max 14inch model - u May as well add a few hundred quid and get the 16 inch and better heat dissemination
    tahmidchowdhury98's avatar
Is it really bad? I just bought an M1 Pro for £1,200 2 weeks ago but feel like selling that for this, don’t want to sacrifice too much on battery life
  7. n707301's avatar
Fantastic - been silently watching this for a week now hoping the price would come down - lots more memory and performance than the 13" Air and only 300grams heavier, versus nearly 1kg on the 16" one.
    Zeb_'s avatar
1kg is nothing man. I've had both and I really struggle to see what people mean by 'more portable' or 'less portable'. The 16" is just plain better in ever way and the weight, for an adult, is unnoticable. A 1kg is bugger all in a backpack.
  8. Daryl_Edwards's avatar
This or the MAX at 2.5k?
    Malachi1's avatar
This one is the 14 inch so more portable. Something to note is that the the max memory config for the M1 Pro is 32gb with up to a 16 core gpu. They might have listed it wrong.
  9. cantonbean's avatar
Heat for the deal. I nearly bought a fully upgraded M1 Max at launch but to be honest you’re better off getting the Pro in the 14 and max in the 16. I did that after looking at reviews where the M1 Max 14 thermal throttles and also has very poor battery life vs all the other M1 models. Of course if you want more displays and GPU power but a 14 inch laptop this is great. (edited)
    chriscam33's avatar
Yes and I think generally with the Max on the 14 unless you have very specific purposes for it’s GPU cores (animation, video rendering) I think it is certainly overkill for most people, very good price on this though
  10. SirAlexCR7's avatar
99% of people don't need a max lol.

Most users (if that) will be fine with a Macbook pro for video editing and music recording / mixing.
    cava83's avatar
Need and want are two things.

I could have got away with a Raspberry PI 5 :-)
  11. servalbyte's avatar
Still really torn on choosing between this and the M3 Pro for my use case (software engineering student) this machine is massively overkill but rather than trading my M1 Air in to Apple I could sell it privately for more and save some cash… decisions!
    Dealv666's avatar
from below I can see M3 pro has a slight edge over the performance of M1 Max!!!

Would anyone recommend this over 14" M3 Max (14-core CPU, 30-core GPU, 36GB Unified Memory, 1TB SSD Storage)? Realise the M3 is less storage, but need a beast of machine to run multiple VMs and be future proof for the next 5 years or so.
    getknk's avatar
1TB storage is quite low for next 5 years.
Also running multiple VM's is bit tricky in ARM based processors as virtualbox is not supported. Said that kubernetes /docker all are feasible
  13. Jonny678's avatar
I am pretty sure it was listed as an M1 Max until a few days ago. So almost certainly a listing error.
  14. feelthevibe's avatar
Looks like listing has been corrected now
  15. The_Deal_Of_Fortune's avatar
I should probably bite one of these deals soon and upgrade my Dual Core 2013 MBP

Macbooks are fast depreciating in value!
    scoobiedoo's avatar
Going off Apple's results, laptop sales have been really poor. I believe they have lots of stock stuck in warehouses. Especially M1s and M2s
  17. SudarshanaVinod's avatar
Great price, if only I'd waited. Id rather have gotten this over the laptopsdirect 14" M1 Max deal I went for for £2400 a few months back
  18. abeuk's avatar
Does this really have a 32c gpu? That’s wrong I think
    chriscam33's avatar
I think it does, as based on the RAM being 64gb it’s likely this is infact an M1 Max chip rather than M1 Pro which does have 32 core GPU

I don't know either if I should cancel the base macbook pro m3 16 inch I ordered for £2099 from Amazon!

Putting aside screen size, is this a better long term bet than the less powerful m3 pro?
    ashbob's avatar
This is 14inc where as the Amazon one is 16in.

Weird how things change. I remember shelling out 2 grand on a Toshiba laptop when they were the bees knees 20 years ago. And 2 grand would be 4 or 5 these days! BTW it still works with Bodhi Linux.

Now its function are handled many times better by £100-200 ThinkPad refurbs. But then, I guess, you get 10+ x performance for doing things I don't as a humble SysAdmin.

    I have a 16" 2019 intel MBP with 16GB Ram.

Can someone justify the use case for me to buy this? My Mac Mini died this year and I haven't replaced it I just plug my 2019 into a monitor and bingo. It still works great and is plenty quick for me.

All I do is heavy MS Office based work with multi tabbed chrome browsing up to 50 tabs and a few PDF's up.

I don't NEED it but that is a hell of a lot of power at that price and I quite like the idea of the 14" form factor plus the gorgeous screen.

Also a justifiable business expense obviously which makes the price about £1200 net to me.

Maybe I've just justified it to myself but can someone tip me over the edge?!
    Tony678's avatar
It’s sold out anyways. It was 100% worth the price.

Can we get this in store? planning on popping into the Reading one today if i can
    Megamind123's avatar
They don't have old models in store. I went to one of the stores on Sunday. They only have the latest Macs.

Thanks OP. I was going to order the M3 pro today but bang for buck this is a great deal
    Tony678's avatar
Why would u order m3 pro over this?
  33. weaseled's avatar
Thank you OP, just placed an order. Been looking at this one for a while hoping for it to come down, hope it lasts few years 🙌🏼
  34. Undisclosed2's avatar
Complete waste of resource for the vast majority of users. Save yourself money and get a cheaper model.

(I use macbooks for fairly intensive tasks - far more than most ever will. I do not do enough to need the Max).
  35. vanillalatte's avatar
This is absolutely overkill for me, but I couldn’t resist the price for the specs. Purchased!
  36. JJJZ's avatar
I’ve gone for the 16 inch because of the 4tb drive. I tried going light with an external drive of 2tb and it’s been killing my productivity just because of the faff. That will teach me to be tight. Now to move on my M1 Pro 512gb.

But for me the 16inch screen is invaluable. I’d love to carry smaller but it’s just not as practical when working.

how is Costco's return policy alike? bought this last week and was thinking if I call them up and say if they can provide a voucher kinda or else the hard-way of returning band buying it again !
