Paying for convenience. Cheaper in the long run to either buy a portable HDD, a higher capacity SD card (if your phone has a slot) or a small USB stick and attach it to your keys.

If you have prime you can backup as many photos as you want as part of your membership. A free MEGA account gives you 20GB, and if you must have a cloud solution look at something like pCloud.

Aside from the fact that convenience and automation is *supposed* to be a cornerstone of backup, nobody with any expertise is going to suggest that a single physical backup is a sane thing to do.

Also I did just look at pCloud, the free version is only 10Gb, the paid version is a lot more expensive and I doubt it's as good as Google's.

There are infinite things I dislike about Google. £15 a year for Google One is not among them. Nor is backup storage all you get for the money. Tick all the security boxes and nobody is ever gonna get at it without your permission. Except possibly the government, but good luck with that. (edited)

Fascinated to know if anyone has done the Google Pixel free cloud storage method? Had a mate that bought the first google pixel off ebay for something like £60. If you have the first google pixel, you get Unlimited free Google cloud storage. He just turns on the phone, syncs across photos from his personal phone to Pixel, then uploads all of them to google photos. A little hassle, but unlimited cloud storage, depending how you look at it. Anyone doing this currently?
    burnduck's avatar
I'm doing that right now, a bit of a faff to set up and get right the first time, but once up and running it's mostly effortless.

I am using Resilio Sync to sync up the photos between my Pixel 7 pro and OG pixel.
Both Resilio Sync and Google Photos app are excluded from battery optimisation on the OG Pixel.
I have my OG Pixel's charger on a timer, and it comes on to charge the phone for 2 hours a day (prevents overcharging battery thus expanding the battery), which triggers Google Photos to do a full backup of what's synced onto the OG Pixel.

A few hours after the OG had finished the backup, Pixel 7 Pro will recognise the photos are now on Google Photos, the button to delete photos will appear on Pixel 7 Pro.

At this point, I'd delete the photos from Pixel 7 Pro, Resilio Sync will automatically delete the deleted photos from the OG Pixel, freeing up space from the OG Pixel.

The only downside is that backup now happens at most once every 24 hours, but for unlimited free storage, I think it's a reasonable compromise. (edited)

If you really want to save money and use cloud you can create another account. So you basically move all your files to the 2nd account and only subscribe for 1 Month. The files stored is still accessible when the subscription expires however you can't add anything to it. So you wait until your main account gets full again and then subscribe another month to move files across. (edited)
    slaha11's avatar
That's a great idea. So you just keep one master account for the subscription and keep pushing more files when needed, by taking a month's sub?

So when your 100GB is eventually full, take a 200GB sub, and stop again?

Will Google ever stop this forever free read-only storage?

I have a 2TB Turkey plan for more than 10 years 😬 once you get it, simply upgrade to 5TB, pay for it and then downgrade back to get the equivalent years for the amount you paid for the new plan
    BlackAdam's avatar
Great idea! Could you break it down into steps because I’m not sure I follow
  6. DavidEllinghan's avatar
Not me 🙃 such a shame there's no option between the 200gb and 2tb. Seems like a huge jump
    jb66's avatar
Its annoying, I'm probably going to have to go through the hassle.of moving to onedrive

The main thing I use my opinion rewards on. Works a charm

I did not know you could do that !

I have been using Backblaze for years backup quite cheap and unlimited
    momo0909's avatar
What sort of plan are you on? They won’t allow nas backups on that plan right? I’d you happen to know.

I've had this plan for a while (normal price) and always wondered if i stopped the payments due to financial reasons, what happens to my pics/videos in backup. Will they still remain there?
    jazzyb88's avatar
They will remain there for I believe 2 years but you won't be able to send/receive emails or do anything else while you are over the quota. See here: support.google.com/goo…=en
  13. smush's avatar
So the discount is for the first 3 months then reverts to regular pricing? For an ongoing subscription like cloud storage wouldn't exactly think of this as a deal.
    sirkenyard's avatar
Gets you to exceed your current storage then threatens to delete if you try go back so yeah. You're tied into it after unless you manually move your stuff elsewhere

the vpn is crap! doesn't work/connect in my place of work. pointless.

Sounds like your work block common VPNs. Pretty common for them to do.

Props to OP - good deal whoever wants to use it.
BTW, info for whoever owns iPhone / Mac:
I use 2TB Apple option and share it with my family. It eradicated for us worry to running out of space in iPhone / Mac.
    nr323's avatar
Yeah, definitely. Same here. And it’s all backed up no faff whatsoever (edited)
  16. BClax's avatar
I pay £1.59pm for this already and consider it a good deal. Would like to get it slightly cheaper if the possibility arose though but unfortunately this deal is not valid for me
  17. expositouk's avatar
Good deal but it is a good idea to have your own storage (external drives, USB sticks etc) for when google, dropbox, box, amazon, microsoft, apple etc decide to give they've reeled in enough captive customers to jack up their prices. I learnt the hard way with dropbox..
    Topper1900's avatar
Or just move it if Google ever raises its prices?

I thought this deal applied to all accounts. I've had the offer since my P6 Pro.
Been thinking about going for this.
I heard WhatsApp will be moving it's storage to your Google Drive space soon. My WhatsApp backup is currently 13gb. And I've already used 13 of my 15gb.
  22. Jason_H's avatar
Thanks OP, will need more storage for the family Christmas pics.

I pay for the 200gb as overflow for my 1Tb of OneDrive. Think it's £2.49 a month for 200gb Google drive

No offer for me 🤷🏻‍♂️ (edited)

Can this be used to backup iPhone via the cloud? Or does that only work with iCloud storage ?
    momo0909's avatar
Apple done allow backups to external online storage services as far as I know

I haven't reached the free limit through many years yetz just wonder would moving big videos to second Google account work when that heppens?
  28. darren_hooker's avatar
Ordered.. Don't know what for don't know how to use it but hey at this price for 3 months it'd be rude not to purchase 😬🙈
  29. S555's avatar
Those who use opinion rewards. Have you been receiving surveys lately? I haven't since oct 23.. Is there a way to reset this?
    Walkerscrisp's avatar
Yes get them regularly. Just make sure your app is up to date and just double check location is on within the app itself. You could uninstall the app and reinstall it but shouldn't really need to. I have just checked and had 42 surveys within the last 30 days and about £4. Use the credit for this exact reason.

My wife actually stopped getting them so reinstalled the app and started getting them again but no idea why unless she'd accidentally turned off location or something. (edited)

VPN like the ones everyone uses to watch content from other countries, or buy cheaper computer games?
  31. Redfist's avatar
This doesn't seem to work with a VPN anymore. I tried upgrading my 100GB Turkey plan to 2TB but rejects the payment. I've since moved to Amazon where I get unlimited free photo storage with prime.
  32. Zeesh_Ali's avatar
Can you use this VPN on a firestick?
  33. bazray's avatar
Just in case anyone has Amazon prime, Amazon Prime customers get unlimited full-resolution photo storage, plus 5 GB of video storage. You can also buy Koofr lifetime online storage and it can sync with Google drive and Dropbox etc.. Stacksocial usually have deals for around $30 for 100GB lifetime and around $160 for 1Tb. I have been using Koofr for a while and it works fine, it's not quite as slick as Google but it's not bad at all.

    techradar.com/rev…ofr
    greycounciller's avatar
I have Koofr, from when they did 10gb free accounts.(edit: still 10gb free)
No where near as slick as GDrive, but very useful as it's my main Photo and Video backup. Only downside is you have to select your favourite images for offline use, otherwise it works online only.
Currently I'm on 78% of my quota after only a year's use. (edited)
  34. Tomb's avatar
If I were to subscribe to this for 3 months then cancel what would happen to any photo's that I had uploaded?

I do have onedrive using the family share method as described already but do like "Google Photos" (which is maxed out at 15GB).

I'm wondering if I might be able to subscribe to this for a couple of months - upload my photos to date then cancel the subscription but still have access to the uploaded photos?? (edited)
    sirkenyard's avatar
If anything like they did with google drive you get put in 60 day read only period which you need to get it back below your current limit and then after that your account is purged.
  35. JamesNolan's avatar
I'm reaching the 200gb limit. Did ask goggle why there isn't a 500gb option but they don't care do they! It's convenient though!
  36. yahoo007's avatar
    Not for me too.🔥
  37. David_OZkH's avatar
I'm currently on 1 year plan 100gb. This deal isn't showing for me
  38. dmannn's avatar
I'm already on the 2TB one. And i think its a good deal at £7.99 tbh! Realistically though I wish they had a 1TB option as 200GB is a bit too small but 2TB is now overkill for what i need it for.
    Barst's avatar
I just checked and my photo/video storage is already up to 1.47TB. To date, I've been using 2x external HDDs and crossing fingers that both don't go at the same time. It's probably time to cross over now...
