What do people use Plex for? If I stream everything (Netflix, Spotify etc) and don’t have a library of films/music, is it of any use? Thanks
Nick_Rider
Basically you get access to a lot of older films from free streaming or low paid subscriptions like Prime. So this is worth it for the lifetime membership alone.
Plus you can build your own library on an old computer, NAS from DVDs to stream worldwide. And then you get the PlexAmp which I have never used but I believe is similar to Spotify, YouTube Music etc.
It's a really nice setup and has a great GUI if you want to build your own personal library that doesn't get deleted as what is happening now to PlayStation, Amazon and Netflix users who "Buy" content that they don't actually own and greedy corps are removing from users.
So yeah you get a lot even if you aren't ready to build your own content.

Why use plex, when there is Jellyfin?
modmouse
Why use Jellyfin, when there is Plex?
Plex has a natively available app on Fire TV sticks when sideloading will no longer work sometime in 2024.

Streamio integrated with real debrid and trakt. Add anything you want to watch on trakt to your favourites using your phone. Click on streamio on firestick and watch via the real debrid links(mostly 4k quality)

What is this real debrid I keep hearing about?

Plex and Jellyfin are becoming more and more relevant again with so many streaming services now
I have never understood what benefits a paid for Plex licence gives over free Jellyfin. This is not a criticism of Plex or their licencing, I just genuinely haven't really found any use-case scenarios that Jellyfin can't cover for me.

I'd love to find a nice easy tutorial to setup a plex server that automatically scalps and catalogues up in the cloud somewhere?

Tried different ways, settled on using swizzin on a seedbox, just get a cheap seedbox (e.g. Contabo for about 10-15 euros a month) then all the docs on swizzin are here: swizzin.ltd/get…ted. One word of warning, it does require you to be a little hands on. For a hand-holding experience I recommend bytesized hosting (bytesized-hosting.com/), that's seedbox + apps all in one. If you go hands on though you can do cool things like install plex-debrid: github.com/its…rid (provided you haave a debrid service) then when you watchlist anything in Plex, it's available to stream (usually) seconds later in Plex. It's pretty amazing. (edited)

I run plex from a spare pc to stream files to my family and friends. Grab and install Tautulli too and you will have a great little setup!

Just FYI jellyfin is free and has worked better for me personally

I have used the free versions of Plex for years, I’ve never had Plex Pass though. Everything works well on IPad, Roku, and Samsung Tv. What difference will the Plex Pass make?
Simon_Martin
I bought it for the features described above, also to support the developer.

Does anyone know of this would work well on a Nvidia shield pro? Thinking of setting up a server using a 2tb external SSD
waz12345
Yes but you don't need the pro version, just use the free version. I do that on my shield pro and it's all dandy

I paid for this, to use the download feature but I must say it’s quite slow and a bit of a pain to use that feature.
Velete
If your downloading from your own Plex server on your NAS or PC or such then the speed will largely be dependant by your own available upload/download speeds between the devices, if they are all on the same network it should be super fast - if your away from home then it's going to be whatever upload speed your NAS/PC can access on home internet and whatever speed is available to your travelling device (cellular,WiFi,etc)

Thinking of making a separate server for child friendly content, do I need a second license for that ? I want an isolate child friendly environment .
Currently using a fire stick, would prefer a Plex only device
McShane
Just create as child account and restrict what content is shown via seperate libaries?

What's the point of this

Plex is a software that sees media that you already own or can find online by other methods and store them in a format where it's easy to navigate; can be accessed by most mobile devices and more.
Plex pass allows you to have access to premium features, such as PlexAmp, hardware transcoding (such as a GPU in the computer that you'd be using and HDR) just to name a selection. These allow you access to multiple streaming at once (hardware transcoding), better colour accuracy/brightness/quality (HDR) and an easy way to select your music (like your own Spotify/Amazon Music) (PlexAmp).
I've been using Plex (the free version) for years and I've "ripped" movies to put onto my server. Have since never needed Netflix, Amazon Prime or gone to anywhere like the cinema for only the cost of running time that my server is doing anyway for projects.
For the cost of £70~ and running costs of a computer, say as an example if you got a Dell Optiplex and put a NVIDIA Quadro P2000 in it, it'll be a very efficient and cheap running machine that you get better performance and a better library (because you'll design it yourself) than places like Netflix/Amazon Prime would be able to provide for you. Bought this a while back and it is good, but it definitely has good competition now. I do get weird problems with it from time to time, but for the most part it's solid enough.

Same here.

I have this for a year and didn't even use once. I don't actually know what to do with it.

Bare minimum - allows to properly use plex on the phone. But does have quite a few good things when you host your own server.

I’ve got lifetime passes for Plex and Emby and yet I use Jellyfin for my own content .. go figure
PsychoSonny
Why? I found jellyfin to be awful. Emby is much better. Never used Plex so can't compare

Even a free lifetime subscription of Plex is still a bad deal. Thanks but no thanks.
They're as bad as lastpass, or even worse when it comes to security and code integrity. (edited)

I paid £20 for this a few months back using the vpn and turkish bank account trick….
McShane
Unless you have blueprints for a time machine, the Turkish method doesn't work anymore as they've jacked up the price.

Where do I find the code on Plex app?
phil.bradley
Not the code above the TV link code or a code the app is asking for?

Will be interesting to see how the landscape changes in a year due to the recent forced migrations. I do expect global Emby use to grow, but how that Jellyfin also will start moving on faster - so system apps just not up to par at the moment.
frankblack100
Used to use Plex years ago. Now have Weyd with Real Debrid and Prem. Never looked back. Is Plex Shares still a thing?
Emby was forked into Jellyfin, Emby is not really maintained anymore, Jellyfin is essentially parity with Plex now

To all Plex users - I am running Plex on Nvidia Shield Pro but find that the volume output is very low through my Sonos Beam soundbar compared to Kodi. I have to really turn up the volume on the remote to hear anything clearly. Have set the Audio Boost to High on Plex settings. Any clues?
lewiscooksey
Set audio to pass through on Plex settings.

I tried plex over a year ago and liked it but it didn’t have what I wanted at the time not sure if that has changed but basically I want to have one place to store everything local content , online streaming services, Netflix, Disney etc and tv channels alongside the tvip providers and have record functionality as well and have the discover search feature able to search all of these by title , actor, genre etc. bit like justwatch, reel good etc but they don’t scan local/iptv , i recall that plex didn’t scan local or iptv on discover search at the time or perhaps I configured it wrong just would be nice to ditch the sky q box and have everything from one pc box and stream to fire sticks around the house (edited)
