I cancelled my subscription a year ago as it was doing my head in, might give it another go.
Tracing ancestry is not necessarily straightforward, and becomes more challenging the further back you try to go, and Ancestry does not necessarily have all the resources to enable you to do this. However, they are in the business of making money and want to draw in as many subscribers as possible, so try to pretend it is easy. They offer 'hints' to who your ancestors might be, but people who don't really know what they are doing accept these hints without question, with the result that many of the family trees are quite inaccurate, and are then copied and perpetuated by others. Also, depending on where your ancestors were from, Ancestry may not be the best place to start. For example, if your ancestors were Scottish, it would be best to start with the Scotland's People website.
I would always recommend that anyone interested in discovering their ancestry read up about how to carry out family history research before jumping in to Ancestry rather than the other way around. (edited)
My subscription (which I took out using the same half-price offer at the same time last year) is due to expire on 3 January, and I had set it not to automatically renew, in anticipation of a similar offer becoming available around now. I was able to take advantage of this offer and was given a rebate of a few pence for the remaining days.
However, payment was a bit of a pain. I tried several times using PayPal, but this did not work. I then tried my credit card, but the amount showing up on the authorisation screen was £0.00, so I could not proceed. After leaving it for a while I was finally able to make payment by PayPal. There may be a general problem with the payment system, or it could just have been a temporary blip. (edited)
Trying to buy the world wide one, mine expires on the 6th Jan and I cancelled before Xmas. It shows me the basket briefly, then asks about if I have an account and if I say yes, it won’t let me log out and pay. Any ideas/suggestions anyone please? Thank you.
