If you live 19+ miles away from Ikea, it is cheaper getting it delivered, plus you will save the best part of a day - getting it done in 2 hours may be a squeeze.
Drive to Ikea, pick all the stuff, pay, sort out hire van, load van, drive home, unload, take van back, drive back home, sleep (edited)

Van hire is so expensive these days
If anyone knows a good deal I would be interested.

Be careful when booking these, as you need a pretty decent credit score to be able to start your hire. I booked one for after I’d moved to get some furniture and it allowed me to complete the booking and didn’t have any sign of an issue until after I’d already bought all my furniture and got to the hire point and opened the app to start the hire. I went to unlock the van and it then cancelled it right away, and when I called their support line they told me it was because of a credit check not going right or something. So they don’t credit check you until you’re stood there in front of it ready to start the hire. Ended up having to spend quite a bit of money to get a minibus to come pick me and my new furniture up!

private hire or the minicab companies in the waiting area?

Title of £27 is a bit misleading. That's if you hired and didn't move the van at all.
I'm 15miles from my local so £37.50 in total.
Like others have mentioned be easier to get it delivered

0.35 a mile is a lot when added on.

Not only cheaper to get it delivered outside of 19 miles, but also less hassle, time saved and peace of mind you won't get stung for any damage to the van and also the goods should be in A+ condition when delivered.

I've always found Sixt Van Rental a better deal. prices vary by location but as an example, £29 for 5 hours ( 24 hours is not much more). 50 miles is included but I don't think their excess mileage will be higher than 35p/mile

Do you need a credit card to be elegible?

Where is the deal?? Seems expensive and mor hassle than home delivery.

I mean if you’re that close delivery is cheap and If you’re a distance away then just get it delivered anyway as you then don’t have to take van back. Plus they’ll collect it all up for you in the store and then deliver to a room of choice. Can’t see why you’d do it yourself when the cost is so nominal.

Better off with Zip Van if you have that near you. Includes hire and fuel.
  13. camaj's avatar
So a £1 saving? Maybe £7 if you want it for 4hrs. More than that and you hit the half-day cap and you don't need membership

Silly question - but are ALL vans/trucks manual? Or are some of them automatic?
The Hertz247 website doesn't show the transmission when you view the vans...
    Flyer01's avatar
Automatics are easy to drive, but if you are worried, put your left foot on the floor, then put the heaviest brick you can find on top of it. Your right foot only has two choices: A (accelerate) & B (brake). Be disciplined with not leaving the gear in 'drive' and using hand brake at traffic lights (so you don't dazzle those behind) as the car will creep forward if you aren't paying attention and relieve pressure on the brake pedal.

They can also be accessed 24/7 (depending on local access restrictions to where they are parked).
We hired last weekend and it was super easy, and arranged literally last minute. All through an app.

IKEA's price rises are pretty phenomenal...i just avoid even going in to store..
    Dribbles_MacTavish's avatar
For some things yes, other items can be pretty cheap in there, it's worth looking around in there.

Kitchen equipment for example is very good quality and very cheap

Hire price is ok but 35p a mile is the killer
  19. zak95's avatar
If you live in a flat especially just do truck delivery those strong delivery drivers will bring it to your doorstep and inside.
  20. doesitmatter's avatar
35p per mile is extra charge or fuel cost? Will they fill fuel for us?
    matiuos44's avatar
There is a fuel card inside the van that you will need to use before returning the van if there is less than 1/4 in the tank.

Thank you very much for posting this, had no idea of this service.

I moved into a house that is 5 miles away from IKEA. We purchased 2 PAX wardrobes and 2 MALM chest of drawers so I would've not been able to fit all that in my Insignia. I was quoted delivery charge of £40.

Additionally, we had old dining table with 4 chairs and 3 bedside tables that we wanted to trade in and IKEA only accepts fully assembled furniture for their trade in offer.

The 2 hour rental ended up costing me £20 plus the annual membership fee. On the other hand we got £240 for our old furniture which almost covered the cost of the 2 chest of drawers.

    Cheers OP
