That is based on Miracast. Apple and many Android phones don't have Miracast - my G5+ e.g. doesn't.

alg

Either - but they recommend using the included power supply. Iirc, it won't do firmware updates unless it's got enough power.

Plugged into the wall.

Does it come with a power supply? or powered from usb?

If you want to cast Amazon Prime you should get a firestick - Amazon and Google don't support each other very well. Or were you being sarcastic lol

maddypc

I bought one to cast from my Samsung Tab A, and it doesn’t cast Amazon Prime, just YouTube, itv hub, Bbc iplayer, Spotify etc. I bought it specifically for Prime video and it doesn’t work

plewis00

Which is basically the issue - TV makers don't seem to get that people don't want to change their TVs as often as their phones but only support their TVs as long as the mobiles... I'm not buying another smart TV again, if it has smart features fine, but Chromecast and Fire Sticks are so good now there's no reason not to.

mikeytee

These are great, got one for my mum's non smart tv now she can watch bbc3 and stream pics from whatsapp to tv. I just wish they would do a deal for Chromecast audio.

joffwl

yep - i totally agree. We bought a samsung smart TV years ago (which I love) but we also got a chromecast at the same time. We used the 'smart' features for a while, but quickly learned that the chromecast was far easier (essentially using your phone as a remote to control the chromecast). We since upgraded to an Nvidia Shield (which supports chromecast). I'm envisaging that my TV will last 10 years (at least?), but i know I can keep plugging in smarter devices as they become available, negating the need for a 'smart' TV in the first place...

Was hoping to use my existing Google credit (from Rewards) on this, but doesn't look like there's an option... Decided it for me considering it's not something I need right now (would have just been nice for the spare TV) :)

Chinese judge / government will look at this and the Chromecast and say "I see no resemblance... You may continue making these unique devices." Google lawyer will look on in disbelief pack up his papers and go out with his tail between his legs.

herrbz

Impressed they've managed to get away with such a shocking rip off.

leechris82

I had these before, there not to bad, but seriously just go with chromecast with ease of use for casting all too, there is a app you download for this to work, but i find it has alot more crash issues than using other apps with chromecast, miracast app in playstore so take a look. Some the features work with the chromecast also. Has a funky little video cast ,

ashtad

Loads of these on eBay do they all support exactly the same as Chromecast, Netflix etc

Where did you see the now TV deal

katestewart9279

So its worth me getting the now tv sport for £179 for 10 months if this is going to cost £5 a month for bt sport and £10 for chrome. If Ive got it right

killabyte

is there a work around using the BT sport app? I have a EE contract but dont use it as signal in my area is crap but i have full access to BT sport with the contract but i use a o2 sim in my phone. Is there some way i can get BT sport to authenticate and use my o2 sim to watch it?

pengwyn

Unfortunately these broadband SIM deals ie 30gb for 15 are not eligible for BT sport. You need to take out a 10 GBP unlimited text and calls with 250mb data and you can get BT sport free for 3 months then it's 5 GBP for phone and 10 for cast so it works out at 25 in total. Has anyone any success with the other Sims that had calls as well as data

pengwyn

Just been told max sim only customers can have the deal

d2014a

Just paid £40 not £44. Does the deal need updating?

wonderbrawl

Sorry for the late reply.... I'm not sure about whether you can configure it with your "home phone number" and you cannot receive calls from it. But you can link it to your mobile number and make calls on it that way. The call quality is akin to using loudspeaker on your phone. It may pick up background noise and it can be hit or miss. I rarely use the feature but it is handy if I am in the kitchen cooking, and need to quickly call my wife.

Ergates

You're right, mainly useful to add into the whole home automation mix. Probably OK for talk radio, but not music. One thing I think could genuinely be useful AND save money is the ability to be able to make phone calls from them. You can configure them with your home phone number or mobile number and make calls for free. The call will even show up on the recipient's caller display as being from your phone number (can't answer calls yet though). You can set up different users and it will recognize the voice, and call the appropriate "Mum", for example, from the user's contacts. Clever stuff.

Yup not in any real rush but have lost my v1 chromecast so be nice to get the two bundled together. I shall wait!

ddrfan

Argos ended the deal a while ago i think, Currys was running it for a bit longer but i just looked again, it seems to be full price now, and no bundle deal with the Chromecast, unless you want to pay full price for both. I wouldn't. If you can wait maybe the price will drop again for Black Friday /Cyber Monday ?

blinkybill

Has this expired now? Can't seem to find it? Please tell me I'm not being dim...

mcav

Hey - I thought you might like to know that JL online chat just price matched Curry's bundle. I just sent them links to both the JL and Curry's bundle pages. Instant price match and no quibble. A note has been placed on the order, and a refund will be incoming after I collect tomorrow. This is how it worked with my headphone purchase. Oh, it isn't worth trying to get the store to do it after you collect.

ddrfan

i got my bundle from Argos on Tuesday 10/07. I could see the deal on the browsing screens, but when i tried to use the self pay terminals it would not apply the discount. i had to go to the till to do it with a staff member's help but i got it for 44 quid. if you missed it, Currys still seem to have the deal. i reckon it's worth it to get the chromecast too even if you have one already as a friend might find it useful for their tv. the home mini speaker itself is go useful. i bought one and liked it so much i bought a 2nd. just being able to ask google assistant without your phone in your hand is so convenient. if you have an android phone and use google services, this is an excellent accessory.

Google Chromecast Ultra £54 @ John lewis

Google Chromecast Ultra UHD 4K Streaming Device from John Lewis with 2-year guarantee.
OBH6UK

Because not all smart TV's support all apps including BT TV and BT Sport, etc nor do they all support YouTube HDR, all of these and others may work via the CCU.

Ergates

This is why I haven't quite been able to justify buying one. Not at full price anyway and not even at this price I think. Maybe if they become cheaper. I have a 4K TV with all the apps. The only disappointing thing so far is the quality of Google Play Movies (same problems whether I use the Play Movies app or the YouTube app). The Ultra may improve on that but I rarely watch a Google Play Movie. The other thing that would be nice would be to cast Google Photos. But, again, not quite worth the cost. I do like the idea of Google Assistant integration but that seems limited in this case. So, even though I'm the OP, I fear I must be sensible and hold off!

Mebster

Just tried it, managed to put my TV to sleep even without the Chromecast channel being on. I normally shout to it and ask it to play things from Netflix. Works most of the time, especially for the regular shows I watch.

Mebster

Genuine question: I'm assuming people looking to buy this have a 4K TV. Most if not all 4K TVs I think have 4K apps for services like Netflix. Therefore why would anyone need to buy this? Btw: I have a standard Chromecast I use on my old TV that doesn't have inbuilt apps.

It would be a pain to get this connected to any Wi-Fi with a login page. I've been considering a Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter for work and I think that might be a good solution for sending content to the hotel TV too.

Phattypab

These don't work on hotspots with captive portals (hotspots that need you to log in or sign up) not without a lot of effort. I travel with a fire stick for that.

rprp

I had my Android phone connected to the hotel WiFi. Then set up a hotspot and used the wife's iPhone (connected to my hotspot) to set the Chromecast up to connect to my hotspot and it all worked fine.
