I'm sorry, but xiaomi has really shown people you can get good tech for a reasonable price. Tp link charging £90, where you can get better xiaomi ones at 1/3 of the price.

Free cloud storage. I guess that's why it's quite expensive

Yeah you need to pay extra to cast BT sports app

atom

Just to be clear do BT charge extra for casting? I currently use the app on my phone, it would be nice to use the tv, do I have to pay extra apart from this device?

louiearch9309

I had ordered the Argos one. Would rather get 3rd gen and save the effort collecting with this

Jason_White

You can power it from the USB port on your TV so you don't have to use the mains USB adapter. Keeps it tidy.

I have an iPad Air and an iPhone 5s. I would like to stream YouTube to my tv at at least 720p from either device ideally both. I’d like to stream games from iPhone 5s to the screen too. Is this a good buy for my wishes?

Cracking deal! Thanks (y)

terrestris

I had a first gen Chromecast for a few weeks, and replaced it with a Roku 2 - being forced into using my phone rather than a remote control was just too annoying - a physical remote is a far superior interface for almost every interaction with a TV style device. The only reason I'd get one now is for travel - I wouldn't use one at home.

Chromecast Ultra £69 elsewhere, the Chromecast matches the price at argos, Currys etc

I think I'll hold off too. Would be nice to have 4K support and decent quality Twitch streams. The Panasonic apps are crap. Some tech youtubers have moved to a boxier 'cinematic' aspect ratio with the top bottom black bars and the Panasonic YT app just translates that into a squashed image vertically and horizontally, it sucks.

I'm in 2 minds. None of the other retailers seem to be discounting the ultra. Probably going to end up waiting...

mart321

For me, chromecast is the single quickest method of getting the content i want on my tv, and it has been for years. The most important thing for most people is being able to stream tv and movies. Most android users have all the dodgy movies apps etc on their phones. I see daily whats been updated while out and about. Most of the time i can plan on what im watching before im home fron work by checking the latest updates on my phone. Plus, because i tend to have my phone on me most of the time, the updates happen regularly throughout the day,so i don't have to sit around waiting for updates when i actually want to watch stuff. when i want to watch a movie/tv show, i browse it through the phone app and cast it to the tv. The whole process takes around 30 seconds There is nothing that can compare to it. Sure the firestick is good but ive found you need to constantly faff around with new build versions of kodi etc and its very slow to load. It can all be done so much quicker and smoother on your phone.Plus theres one less remote to worry about.

mcsmik

Nobody arguing pointed out you can use google home to play things from YouTube and Netflix on the chrome cast. You can’t do that with the TVs built in cast functionality nor can you do it with Apple TV. I have an iPhone and I love my chrome cast for its speed

herrbz

Impressed they've managed to get away with such a shocking rip off.

leechris82

I had these before, there not to bad, but seriously just go with chromecast with ease of use for casting all too, there is a app you download for this to work, but i find it has alot more crash issues than using other apps with chromecast, miracast app in playstore so take a look. Some the features work with the chromecast also. Has a funky little video cast ,

ashtad

That is based on Miracast. Apple and many Android phones don't have Miracast - my G5+ e.g. doesn't.

If you want to cast Amazon Prime you should get a firestick - Amazon and Google don't support each other very well. Or were you being sarcastic lol

maddypc

I bought one to cast from my Samsung Tab A, and it doesn’t cast Amazon Prime, just YouTube, itv hub, Bbc iplayer, Spotify etc. I bought it specifically for Prime video and it doesn’t work

plewis00

Which is basically the issue - TV makers don't seem to get that people don't want to change their TVs as often as their phones but only support their TVs as long as the mobiles... I'm not buying another smart TV again, if it has smart features fine, but Chromecast and Fire Sticks are so good now there's no reason not to.

mikeytee

These are great, got one for my mum's non smart tv now she can watch bbc3 and stream pics from whatsapp to tv. I just wish they would do a deal for Chromecast audio.

joffwl

yep - i totally agree. We bought a samsung smart TV years ago (which I love) but we also got a chromecast at the same time. We used the 'smart' features for a while, but quickly learned that the chromecast was far easier (essentially using your phone as a remote to control the chromecast). We since upgraded to an Nvidia Shield (which supports chromecast). I'm envisaging that my TV will last 10 years (at least?), but i know I can keep plugging in smarter devices as they become available, negating the need for a 'smart' TV in the first place...
