Decent price for the Asus RT-AX86U Pro router model, UK prices are over £250, but Amazon Italy has it for €181.99 (£155ish at time of writing). Cheaper than a lot of lower spec and performing routers at this price, not sure I would be willing to pay £200 for a router personally, but this looked a better deal than some of the £130 - £160ish devices I was looking at.

Best to use a fee free card if buying to avoid any extra charges. If choosing to buy in GBP on the site, it'll cost ~£162 (which includes Amazon's £3.55 exchange rate fee).

This router is compatible with the Asus-Merlin firmware for those interested, has good reviews for both speed and range as a standalone or as part of an AI mesh router.

I've never needed a gaming router before and the term generally doesn't interest me, but it seems most half decent devices get branded this way now (marketing me thinks).

Great price, paid £210 for this back in March, run my wireguard VPN on it and WiFi coverage has been good, easy to add aimesh devices as well to increase your WiFi coverage.

How does this compare to the AX88U?
    Mr_M_Plow's avatar
    Mr_M_Plow Author
Depends what you're looking for - the AX88U (non pro) has 8x 1Gb LAN ports so if you need the extra ports then it will be a good choice (you could always get an 8 port 1Gb switch if you did need extra ports in any case).

On paper the 2.4GHz performance should be better on the AX88U model, but real world results tend to vary considerably when it comes to wifi performance with all routers.

The AX68U Pro is a newer model and has an updated quad core CPU (2.0GHz vs 1.8GHz on the AX88U), but real world you probably won't notice the difference. The AX86U Pro also supports VLANs (if you need this feature, most people don't), has a 2.5Gbps port and being a more recent release will likely be supported for longer than the AX88U (which came out early 2019 I believe).

Note there is an AX88U Pro which was released around the same time as the AX68 Pro and has similar hardware (2.5Gb port, 2GHz quad core CPU), but doesn't have the 8x 1Gb LAN ports

Horses for courses - depends on what exactly you need from your router.

Used this router for roughly 2 years now. Highly recommend. In-built VPN solutions very handy when needing to travel to countries that lock down the internet. Especially China. Good Wi-Fi signal. Parental Controls, Security features and general admin are excellent.

Only issue I have had with it is the Traffic Analyzer feature simply does not work. For me despite how many factory resets and firmware updates I've done, even ones which in the firmware notes mentions they "fix" the Traffic Analyzer feature. It still stops recording data after 2-3 weeks of recording data. Very frustrating as its pretty handy feature that even some bog standard home broadband routers could achieve... I remember a plain BT router managing it over a decade ago. Maybe they will fix it one day or the community Merlin firmware will fix it.

To confuse matters, there are 3 ‘AX86’ model routers.
The RT-AX86U is the older of the 3 but is similar specs to the RT-AX86U Pro (but slightly lower).
The RT-AX86S is a lower spec model to the U and U Pro, a few differences are below:
Only has a dual core CPU (others have quad core)
512MB RAM compared to 1GB on U and Pro models
No multi-gig ports on the S
The U Pro supports guest network pro and VLAN support, the other 2 don’t.

If you don’t need these features then the S is a decent model by the looks of it

The router arrived from Italy & all seemed good until I tried to register the warranty on the Asus website.
Once registered it tells me that the warranty has expired. I contacted Asus who told me that the item is known in the industry as Grey Goods & the warranty isn't valid in the UK.

Yep - as I stated earlier - ASUS have warranty hubs. UK and Ireland are one and if you buy one of their products outside of that region (meant for sale in another regions - in this case Italy) - you have no warranty with ASUS. Not only that, they will not provide you with Technical Support at all.
You will need to check with Amazon Italy what type of waranty they will provide you now in case of issues - assuming a year ?

I have read a few comments on Amazon Europe saying ASUS will not honour the 3 year warranty if you buy from a different country and Amazon will only give 1 year warranty for faulty items
    Danger_Mouse's avatar
    Danger_Mouse
I also get the impression that Asus will send you back to the retailer for the 3yrs even if bought in the same country, they're not known for good customer service sadly :/

I have this model and am currently looking at returning it, I seem to get a common wifi issue others do (wifi connection is dropped and have to cycle wifi on the device to get it to reconnect), does anyone else have this issue? At my wits end with trying to get it sorted, and if not return it!

Is wifi dropping only on your phone? If not...I'll give a tip anyway for others:)

There is a default function on android phones that make routers look bad.
Under the wifi settings, go to inteligent wifi settings and then turn off switching to mobile data.

    So what is happening?
When some phones are in range of 5Ghz signal and move out of its reach they turn to mobile data instead of swapping to 2.4Ghz.
Both my gf and myself have s21 and she had this issue.
It's worth of checking before you give it away.

Received today and connected. Huge improvement over ac68u speed wise, not so much coverage wise (was losing connection in the far corner of the garden). Connected ac68u as an mesh node - seems to work well, no complaints so far.

Nice, I did find I needed to turn off the "DFS" channels on the 5GHz band for mine to get a few older devices to connect, and in doing so I found the speeds were also much better.

There's quite a few tweaks people talk about on snbforums.com for the wifi if you find any issues.

Please be careful when buying "ASUS" products from abroad. There warranty system is based on Locales and they "WILL NOT" honour the warranty on this item if bought outside the UK (UK & Ireland are treated as a warranty hub).
I bought a new Asus 660TI from amazon germany many years back and Asus would not even provide technical support when they realised I purchased outside of amazon.co.uk.
I went through a lot of back and forth with amazon and asus at the time and amazon eventually took it back and provided me with full credit as the card was only 1.5 years old.
You basically wont have a warranty on the Asus router if you choose to buy it from a European country.
    So forewarned ...

Great router. Been using it for 3 years (non pro version, only diff is CPU speed, 2.0GHz vs 1.8GHz).

I run a VPN on it when I'm using IPTV and they've made it even easier by integrating SurfShark into it which is the VPN I use. I use the Asus phone app to turn the VPN on/off. Haven't even bothered to install any of SurfSharks software on my PC.

Best deal I ever had on HUKD . (edited)

Mine still in the box, got a sky router, networked to two other routers as extenders Wi-Fi and 8 cat 5 in a hub. All works without a glitch and I don’t careless about security. I only got it for streaming to quest. I just don’t think I will see any real world difference other than high electric bill and more ways to go wrong.

that said I’m going to set it up in a month or too save it going to waste.

Hmmm, just recently purchased the ASUS GT-AX6000 (still within the 30 Day return window), the RT-AX86U Pro was on my shortlist for an upgrade from the RT-AC86U.

Now do I return the AX6000 and get the AX86U Pro and save nearly £100?

    Thoughts and info.

Super! Have the non-Pro RT-AX86U and it’s got terrific WiFi coverage, and is super-stable. Coming from one of TP-Link’s top-end models, rhe difference was night and day. Just to note, as others have stated the “Pro” has a 0.2GHz speed bump over the non-Pro RT-AX86U … but it also trades one of two USB 3.0 ports found on the non-Pro version for USB 2.0, in case that makes a difference to you.
BUT… the Pro also supports VLANs! (source)

I have the non-Pro version of this and it is awesome, you will not find a better router at this price.

Wow price. I wanted to buy this, but it was always above £200. I ended up with asus gs-ax5400 like new for about £150. This ax86u has more memory and a much better CPU (4cores 2ghz vs 3cores 1.5) for my VPN needs. More powerful cores=faster VPN speeds.

Great price. I have been happy with my AC86U's running AIMesh for past 4-years, however it will be nice have the Wifi-6 option. Maybe I can now take advantage of the Virgin 1Gig broadband.

There are other WiFi 6 routers you can check. The advantage of this is 2.5Gbe port so perfect for broadbands higher than 1Gbe or for internal networks combined with NAS.

I have a 500mb line with sky on MER network (no idea what that means but apparently it makes a difference as to what router I need). My wifi if patchy particularly upstairs. Can I swap the sky router out with this? Am I likely to notice much of a difference? Can I add a ubiquitous wifi access point to this router?
    Mr_M_Plow's avatar
    Mr_M_Plow Author
You should be able to swap the router out with this one - with the 500mb line i'm assuming you have a BT ONT (small white box) which has an RJ45 cable going to your existing router. If so then you can move that connection to the WAN port on the Asus router and use the settings mentioned in this thread Sky Broadband - Asus Router.

Sky and their so called "MER" setup is a widely debated topic on the Sky forums, technically it isn't MER on their FTTP lines, it's something like IPoE using DHCP Option 61 and/or IPv6 PD (Prefix Delegation), and Sky strangely used an odd setup for their connections which no one quite understands why!

In terms of a Ubiquitous access point - I believe there's no issues setting it up with this Asus router with the same SSIDs, but it wouldn't be seamless transition between the two (client would disconnect and reconnect to wifi).

Based on a quick look at the costs of the Ubiquiti wifi access points, you could get another cheaper model Asus router for similar/less and create a Mesh network with the two Asus devices - this would be seen as one big wireless network to your devices and there would be seamless transition between them.

What power adapter are people using with this? As suspected, mine came with the 2 pin plug. Would rather get a new supply than using a 2 to 3 pin converter.

I'm going to get this as a more permanent solution not worth getting a new one . It's double insulated so should be fine with a proper adapter. I don't like the chapter ones but the one below looks a lot better . Currently using a cheaper adapter but it sparks when it moves so don't like it as a permanent solution . You can also get the below one as a two pack on eBay for a little bit more .
