Sorry what is the issue with a TN screen, not great for outdoors use?
    shayman1992's avatar
TN screens are fine for casual use but if you're doing any sort of editing that requires colour accuracy then it's not suitable. Whereas IPS displays offer better color accuracy and wider viewing angles and perform better in gaming. VA displays are better for media consumption due to its higher contrast. Then you also have OLED & Mini LED but those panels usually come at a higher price.

On the quality chart this is how I rank them from "best to worst", but it could differ based on the user.

    1st: OLED
    2nd: Mini Led
    3rd: IPS
    4th: VA
    5th: TN

Apologies for possibly a dumb question, but why is a TN panel deemed as such a negative on a Laptop? Screen should be directly Infront of you and within arm's reach, so viewing angles etc aren't relevant? Need a laptop max budget £350 and this seems to have best CPU/ram/storage combo at this price point

Unless your head is in a vice and you never lean back/forward or tilt your head/neck whatsoever, viewing angles are still a problem due to the gamma shifting. TN panels also typically have the worst contrast ratio of the common LCD types (TN/IPS/VA). So even if you get a modern TN panel that's 99%sRGB coverage or wide gamut, it's still no indication of accurate colour reproduction (edited)

Is this DDR4 or DDR5? It's still a great deal even with the TN screen

Whats the build like on these, all metal or plastic/metal combo?
    itsmewhoami's avatar
    Definitely more plastic than metal!
    Bottom casing is plastic.
    Screen bezel is plastic.
Only the back of the screen is metal.

Hi, I'm not great with computers and I've tried googling this before asking but with no luck!

Which would generally be a better buy, this or the dell below. Thanks!

Can't believe a laptop of this spec has a TN panel, bonkers (edited)
    shayman1992's avatar
True that's the only downside but I'm guessing that's the only way to achieve this price, hopefully something with similar specs and better screen will come up closer to BF

    Any good for games?
    iby2012's avatar
Its a laptop with a iGPU and a screen? Depends on what you want to play, which will be not much.

Is this worth it over a second hand Lenovo T480?
  18. shayman1992's avatar
The Lenovo is better, similar screens the Dell has a WVA panel which is basically a fancy TN panel, but the Lenovo has a better CPU and faster DDR5 ram and it's cheaper. Oh and the Dell has WiFi6 Vs WiFi5 on this and 1tb Vs 512gb on this but still the Lenovo is better. (edited)

Either would be fine most likely. My main caveat with this is the 8GB ram, I feel is a bit limited in nowadays applications

Checked the spec, it’s WiFi 5 so not latest but good enough. But will the WiFi support wpa3 encryption?
