sorted byTo be specific, it was all about the cameras, even the selfie camera shoots in 4K.
I spent a long time looking over sample photographs and I think whether you think they are good, depends on what you want. The images are a little oversaturated and a little too contrasty; in other words they 'pop' in the way that (some) like for uploading to Instagram, etc. I looked for a Gcam port and config file that would tame that look, without restarting to manual or spending time post processing but couldn't find much, which surprised me, perhaps the CPU/GPU Honor used isn't well suited to Gcam.
So, in other words, if you don't like that overly (in my opinion) contrasty look in some scenes (for instance, it can make scenes from rainy day city photography look a bit stark/gothic in some shots; great to shoot a horror movie on?!) that looks to have come from a camera phone; if you prefer smooth graduation between mid-tones to dramatic contrast, if you prefer relatively natural-looking, true-to-life photographs with convincing detail in the shadows/dynamic range, you might want to look elsewhere, which probably means upping your budget.
Also, to get those 'great' camera chops, quite a lot of sacrifices were made.
Budget phone cameras quite often still come with a very welcome headphone socket. This one doesn't. Some come with a decent IP rating, where the Honor is perhaps, at best, resistant to a little drizzle, rather than a full-on downpour, there has been criticisms of it being easy to break, the plastic used, that it has a mono speaker that is easily accidentally covered/muffled and - and there are other criticisms you can read about from some of the less sent-a-review-sample type camera-photography channels.
Still, there are some good features to those cameras and I'm seriously considering getting one as a stopgap to something better a few years down the line, even if it means quite a bit of tweaking in post; I'm told Honor aren't great at bringing out promised updates but... for a few years of use, perhaps worth it. I'm told the screen is pretty good, too. Hope this helps someone a bit; I'm struggling to figure out what I want, too!
I would be interested if anyone is able to suggest which phone is better value for money?
