    Just outta curiosity,
Apple TV streamer seems quite popular here.

Is there a point getting it if you have a recent smart TV, Which have access to all the streaming services?

Is there any advantages for a Apple TV streamer?
    thehappyhammer's avatar
dedicated STBs are generally quicker/slicker than smart TV apps and tend to be better supported going forward. The other advantage is if you want to distribute ithe content then you can use a splitter or matrix to feed the output to more than one TV.

Got one fairly recently for Zwift use. Great machine - horrid touchpad controller on this model.

Yep better going for the Gen 2 model with new remote.Very slick and clean home screen with no ads just the apps you use.Only gripe on the remote is that pesky siri button which is too easy to activate with no way to disable it.I'm on the verge of getting the super glue out

No HDR on YouTube with this gen

does this work outside the UK? any geofencing in place !?!

You can install Tailscale which is a free VPN - you would need to run an exit node at home and then you can stream as if you’re at home.

    Which generation?
    thehappyhammer's avatar
    1st Gen 4K - 2017. and 32GB. I'd pay a bit more for a newer model with more storage.

Mine still going strong after 5 years & has travelled the world with me. No need for the newer ones or larger memory imo, never needed it. Works flawlessly with my iPad/iPhone, IPTV etc & apps like Prime/Netflix run 10x smoother than they do on majority of smart TVs. Bargain

I was under the impression that Apple TV could'nt do IPTV? Am I wrong on this assumption? Thanks in advance.

Is it possible to mirror sky sports or virgin go from your phone to an Apple tv box?
    Sydney85's avatar
Not if you’re using sky go- it won’t give you the option to cast. You could mirror your phone screen I guess as a workaround
  8. pmikeyboy's avatar
Great price for a quality piece of tech.  The mirror from your iPad/iPhone to the screen is an added bonus

My TV has Apple TV and has SharePlay functionality so I can connect my iPhone to it. Does the Apple TV provide anything extra or would it be pointless for me to?

    Good for Atmos?
    Assured_Brother's avatar
Not for pass through but for Atmos LPCM it's good. Ideal for a soundbar that supports, not so good for an avr which would trump the atv audio if given the chance.

Just want something for streaming would this be better than a new fire stick? I don't use any apple products in my home so I don't really care about integration just want the best product for the money that will serve me well and has update support for a good few years.
    tinfoilhat's avatar
if you don't have any other apple products then I'd get the Google chromecast. I have a Chromecast and the last version of the 4k firestick. I think the Chromecast is better. I don't use Amazon prime TV, nothing much I like to watch
  11. Jean54's avatar
I advise it if you have to stream from your iphone with Airplay, i own a firestick unfortunately it doesn’t have airplay kit like fire tv
  12. greenant's avatar
Amazon's relentless advertising is a bit much. I have to dismiss a full page ad when using my firestick 4k max. These Apple TV deals are so tempting, but 1) This model is much older than the Apple TV which replaced it (several years), 2) no side-loading i assume. I don't fancy doing a developer workaround to get forbidden apps on there.
  13. Joe_B's avatar
Can you side load with these?
    Jean54's avatar
Yes with TrollStore depends the iOS version
  14. scoundr3l's avatar
Are these better than a Shield Pro 2019?
Can they emulate old school gaming?
    sjgorilla's avatar
I have both and the answer is simply no.

    Can this be jailbreak ?
    tomwatts's avatar
For what? Everything you want is available on the App Store...
  16. harrythefish's avatar
We are currently in the process of developing a native AppleTV/tvOS app, but it is not yet available.

Something my Fire stick can do and even on a per app basis. Dealbreaker...
    unuspromulti's avatar
Could you set up the vpn on your router instead? Easy to do on Asus or most things a bit more prosumer.
  17. k_tse's avatar
Picked up one of these on an ealrier deal. It's fine for the price, but definitely not 'opened - never used' as advertised, in case that matters to anyone. Had obvious wear and had to give it a proper wipe down before using it.
  18. Essexnigel's avatar
I have the none 4k version of this, is it worth upgrading to the 4k ?
    Joel_Thomas4vH's avatar
If you want to enjoy 4k content then yes.
  19. ajg87's avatar
Does this still get any updates
  20. fast_and_curious's avatar
Don't own any Apple devices in-house. Will it still be useful if I just use it to stream iptv or Netflix/Disney, for that matter... Thanks
    Joel_Thomas4vH's avatar
I'm the same. No iPad, iPhone, apple watch, airpods, any of that. I have yet to find a better streaming device that I like the user interface and look of.
