Would I be able to run my wiser heating app/system on this?

If Alexa has a skill for it, or you can write one. Often skills for Alexa are half baked. For example, with my Hive I can advance the heating but not the hot water.

A shame you can't side load homeassistant on this. Would have made a top notch dashboard. Heat for your first deal!

The way i run my home assistant on my echo 15 is have it set as a favourite on silk. So i just say "open silk" then pick the first option, and im logged straight into my local homeassistant. works really well

Had this for two - to 3 years. Beware of burns on screen, the dimmer the better.

Should really be free with Prime.

Good price, but I've seen a few articles about Amazon allegedly considering payments to access Alexa because it is loss-making. Rumours at the moment, but I'm not planning to buy into their ecosystem.

    Do you use an iPhone?

I like the idea of using devices like this as a smart home hub, but having owned the Echo Show 10, it completely changed my mind about the Amazon 'show' devices.

The voice assistant actually worked quite well for control of local devices, but using the interface was painfully clunky, slow and laggy. The CPU in the Show 15 appears to be more powerful, but it's going to be nowhere near as good as a any decent tablet or modern smartphone.

The deal breaker was the Ads. I know some people don't seem to mind, but having uninvited ads pumped into my home like a digital advertising billboard really irks me.
People say you can turn them off, by pressing ↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ← → ← → B A, blah blah. So you "turn off ads", then it'll still advertise amazon services. Then you switch those off, then it's grand for a week then the next time you look it is advertising some new thing that it auto-opts you into so you need to disable that too. Rinse and repeat.

I traded my Show in for a Echo speaker, then bought a Pixel tablet instead to use as a smart home hub. It can work great with home assistant, has no ads, is responsive and has a lovely screen. It just comes with a massive downside... and that is the £500 price tag.

Given Amazon is likely to continue to deliver more Ads or charge a subscription fee for the Echo devices or a premium version, I won't be buying a Show device again. (edited)

I changed my Show 8 1st gen with a gen 2. On the first one, I've managed to get rid of almost all ads, playing with the settings. I've ticked off about a quarter of the section with the ads in order to achieve this.
On the 2nd gen, it was a pain. I went in settings and switched off more than 50% of the ads 'domains'. The display was still showing countless ads. Little by little, I switched off more and more domains. Still annoying, no change. Eventually, I left only one domain unticked. I barely get any ads now. Because of this, and also for some other reasons, I do like more the 1st gen. (edited)

Great deal! Amazon allowed me to use my previous 25% trade in discount on this too!
    Keynote2023's avatar
How did you manage that? I have a trade in discount but it won't apply to this at checkout

I have one of these and I love it. Took the TV out of the kitchen and just use this instead.

Can you watch actual TV on this?

At present I’m using the Sky Go app on an iPad Pro 1st gen but the battery has started going on me, so I’d like this as a replacement for that reason only really, so I can watch rubbish telly while cooking

Has a full price one with remote in my basket and was going to use trade in 25% off to update. But this is a great price... Shame no remote
    LeeTheRed96's avatar
Could you use an old Firestick remote you had lying around?

Or the Amazon fire app on iPhone? (Or android)

Nice! It says “try for 30 days” at the top of the page too. Been looking at one of these for a while. I’m imagining it being a bit of a family organiser so we can add all of the million things I try to remember with school and the kids and have it as a bit of a hub of knowledge in the kitchen.

Fingers crossed it does the job as it could make life a lot easier!

Do share how you get on.

I keep looking at it thinking "that's just what I need!" but I worry about how much flexibility there will really be, whether the widgets will do what we need to do etc...

Mine has a dodgy display with a line running through it replacing - so much for certified!

Disappointed the usual reviews section is missing from the listing (unless I’m missing something!).

I guess Sky Go wouldn’t be available on this, as it’s not on the firesticks?

I’ve been waiting for one of these to crop up, just not sure I’d get my monies worth out of it, I barely use the Show 8.

34 quid for a plastic stand is a bit ambitious too like. (edited)

Yeah think the reviews just show up on the standard listing, be nice if they were specific to the refurbished units.

    How do you do that?

Really like mine, but I was intending on using it to watch my ring camera in the nursery and the connection just drops out constantly making it a bit pointless

Had my eye on one of these for the kitchen but I’m holding out for a new model. It’s been around without an update for years.
  25. Zedmeister's avatar
How much was this new when it was on black Friday discount?
    LeeTheRed96's avatar
Brand new option was either £220 or £229, I was tempted but didn’t take the plunge.
