I don't know but I know there is a Grand Conquest (free) DLC that combines all your races and lords from both games for a single massive campaign. Looks epic

I think everyone is intelligent enough to realise that you can't own DLC for a game which you don't own, it makes no sense. A DLC is dependent on the game itself.

They have a much more forgiving rhythm generally than Company of Heroes/Dawn of War 2, which are really on the edge for me (I keep meaning to go back with Cheat Engine or shortcut switches to forcibly slow them down). The strategy layer is fully turn based. I never found Total War a really hard min-max strategy game - they're great for atmosphere and conjuring war stories. They have a narrative flow a lot like Paradox grand strategy - gradual building up and civilizing punctuated with violence breaks. Like Crusader Kings there's usually a slice of family planning, with characters gaining and losing traits; there are agents to move around the board for skullduggery (who also level up). It's all very engaging and there's good variety.I can't really comment much on the newer titles. I believe from reading reviews Attila and Warhammer are both something of a return to form, while for me Medieval 1 (not on sale), Rome and Medieval 2 were all terrific. I think if you want extra challenge these games are all heavily moddable and have plenty of high quality hardcore mods (as well as AI mods for the battles). Might pick up Attila though with my Humble discount, I love that setting. Or maybe get around to actually playing Warhammer :Dok putting a sock in it now

I did discover the order-while-paused feature on company of heroes which made it a lot easier - but thought it was cheating as of course you cannot do it in multiplayer! but on one mission where I'm crossing multiple bridges, repelling attacks, all in a time limit, I just cannot juggle so many things at once! AI is overtaking us

Summary

The Old World echoes to the clamour of ceaseless battle. The only constant is WAR!

A fantasy strategy game of legendary proportions, Total War: WARHAMMER combines an addictive turn-based campaign of epic empire-building with explosive, colossal, real-time battles, all set in the vivid and incredible world of Warhammer Fantasy Battles.

Command four wholly different races: the Empire, the Dwarfs, the Vampire Counts, and the Greenskins, each with their own unique characters, battlefield units, and play style.

Lead your forces to war as one of eight Legendary Lords from the Warhammer Fantasy Battles World, arming them with fabled weapons, armor, and deadly battle magic; hard-won in individual quest chains.

For the first time in a Total War game, harness storms of magical power to aid you in battle and take to the skies with flying creatures, from ferocious dragons and wyverns to gigantic griffons.

Hundreds of hours of gameplay await you at the dawn of a new era. Total War: WARHAMMER brings to life a world of legendary heroes, towering monsters, flying creatures, storms of magical power and regiments of nightmarish warriors.

Lead Extraordinary Races
The valiant men of the Empire, the vengeful Dwarfs, the murderous Vampire Counts and the brutal Orcs and Goblins of the Greenskin tribes. Each Race is wholly different with their own unique characters, campaign mechanics, battlefield units and play style.

Command Legendary Characters
March your forces to war as one of eight Legendary Lords from the Warhammer Fantasy Battles World, arming them with fabled weapons, armor, mounts, and deadly battle magic as you uncover their tales through a series of unique narrative quest chains.

Conquer This World
The very first Total War game to feature a fantasy setting. Experience incredible depth and the freedom to conquer as you see fit across a gigantic sand-box Grand Campaign map. Crafted from a twisted magical landscape and populated with an incredible array of awesome and deadly creatures, this is your chance to experience fantasy strategy on a scale as yet unimagined.

Unleash the Monsters
The battlefields of Total War: WARHAMMER echo to the swoop and roar of dragons, the bellowing of giants and the thundering hooves of monstrous cavalry. Towering beasts of both earthly and supernatural origin wade into the melee of battle, bringing death to hundreds of lesser creatures at a time.

Harness the Winds of Magic
Smite your enemies with magical storms, melt their armor, sap their fighting spirit or bolster your own forces with devastating spells that split the sky and consume the battlefield. Rally wizards, shamans and necromancers to your armies and bend titanic and unpredictable energies to your whim.

Watch the Skies
Harass your enemies with Dwarfen Gyrocopters, plunge into their front-lines with terrifying Wyverns and achieve air superiority with a stunning array of flying units for the first time in a Total War game. Entirely new tactical possibilities present themselves as you deploy your winged minions in open battles and jaw-dropping sieges.

What is more, this title will go on to combine with two future standalone instalments and additional content packs to create the largest Total War experience ever. An epic trilogy of titles that will redefine fantasy strategy gaming.

nice deal but I still need to get some value of the first one lol. it is looking good but I have for sidetracked
The problem is us, gamers. Do not ever preorder. Don't give money for something that some dick Tom or Harry has not even started coding in his basement in California. It's not a small indie studio that needs to release a half baked game in early access in order to finance it. But people think it's okay to buy a base game for £35 quid then pay £10 for each bloody dlc. I don't even dare to calculate how much i paid for total war Warhammer altogether. Don't make the same mistake.
Got the first game for £32 and logged about 150hrs, at £25 this is a bargain I reckon. Can't wait to try out the high elves!
Szabster

You could get the Base game of the first one in humble monthly for a … You could get the Base game of the first one in humble monthly for a tenner. Let me rant a bit:Tons of DLC's, Major game breaking bug not fixed for weeks, and all this new content could have been released for the first game but they want more money. Please don't preorder. Don't get me wrong, the first game was great but their business practice is just disgusting. As much as I loved or wanted to love the first game I will not buy the new one until it's heavily discounted.

That Denuvo protection is apparently so difficult to crack that CA managed to get nearly a year's worth of unpirated sales through and could therefore charge what they wanted and implement whatever paid DLC strategy they wished.

While I oppose the pirating of good games, I'm worried that prices will NOT come down once piracy is diminished.
LibertyLives

I actually think they've improved quite dramatically with Warhammer. … I actually think they've improved quite dramatically with Warhammer. Their business practice is far better than it was at the time of Attila or Rome 2. Also, despite the issues with their business practice, many other companies are far worse. EA is a big one, or Paradox Interactive. Sega is positively charitable compared to some of their competitors.

Paradox are the worst when it comes to barebones games and paid DLC.
