If you want to use your phone in the US, you need to look at Three PAYG with Go Roam for up to 12GB of data inclusive, O2 with Volt benefits for up to 24GB of data inclusive, or EE with the roaming pass for up to 50GB of data inclusive, all with minutes and texts back to the UK included too.
If you need unlimited data, you'll have to pick up a local SIM upon arrival instead.

For Smarty and Three, Smarty was stopping working for no reason in a Zyxel router (three unlocked form ebay one), three was working fine and to this day I have no idea why it didn't work properly on Smarty. (I have tested it in 2 the same model routers with the same results)
Anyway, I bought a proper router from Amazon, and my smarty sim was working perfectly fine for nearly a year now, with no dropouts, a stable connection with 500+ mbps download, and 50-70 mbps upload speed.
Smarty is changing ip every couple of minutes, but from what I have seen, Three is doing the same as they don't provide IPv6.
In my opinion, both networks work the same as they are both owned by the same company, unlike ID Mobile, who's owned by the carphone warehouse.
