An Impressive Set of Features

• A15 Bionic chipset

  The difference between the A14 and A15 chips is less about adding extra features and more to do with speeding up the phone. That said, Facetime, Safari, Messages and Apple Maps have been improved to make them more user-friendly. Plus, a new feature called Focus allows you to filter your notifications to suit the situation. These are all welcome changes, but this chipset really shines when it comes to processing. For gaming and photo editing the graphics are outstanding and you can also play with identification or creativity apps to see how quickly the phone’s machine learning feature comes to life.

• Design

  Apple has crammed so much tech into this handset, along with a bigger battery that it’s slightly heavier than the 12 Pro Max. It also keeps the smooth edges of the previous model but has a larger camera array. The notch appears to take up less room, but you still won’t get the full-screen effect that Samsung seems to have mastered. There is no Touch ID, which is likely to disappoint many, as it’s often seen as more convenient than PINs or Face ID. The colour options are Sierra Blue, silver, graphite and gold, so there are a few choices, albeit from a muted palette.

• Display

  Driven by Apple’s 120Hz ProMotion technology, the display is responsive, vivid and smooth. From reading while scrolling to streaming video and swiping through app screens, the experience is seamless. The 6.7-inch screen has around 1000 nits of brightness when you're using the Adaptive setting and will scale between refresh rates depending on what you’re doing. This preserves battery life and also creates the best possible visuals.

• Connectivity

   5G is enabled along with LTE connections. 5G is considerably faster, but still not offered over most rural parts of the UK. When this is the case, the phone will just switch over to an LTE network, so the impact is minimal. To preserve your data and battery life, your phone will enter Data Saver Mode when 5G isn’t required. It also has dual SIM functionality. Along with a nano-SIM slot, this phone can support an eSIM, so you can use two different phone numbers. • Storage

  This phone has 6GB RAM and starts from a storage option of 128GB, moving on to 256GB and 512GB. If you anticipate needing more room the largest storage option is 1TB - a new maximum for handsets.

• Battery

  According to Apple, the battery will last for over 12 hours of standard use, this includes surfing, taking calls, streaming and gaming. In terms of charging, the 20W UBC-C charger included with each phone will take it to 50% capacity within 30 minutes. If you prefer to use a MagSafe charger the powering speed could be slower, as these work at 15W.

• TrueDepth Camera

  A raft of hardware upgrades mean the camera array has been enlarged. The main aperture lets in 49% more light than the previous 12 Pro Max, while the ultrawide lens delivers an extended field of view. The telephoto lens has a more powerful 3X zoom. Software enhancements have also been made to maximise the punchier array. You can take shots up to 2cm away and capture plenty of detail, or use different Photographic Styles to alter the colour temperature, tone and contrast of your shots.

• Cinematic Mode

  Video recordings are another area in which this phone excels. In Cinematic Mode, you can shoot complex footage that’s rich in bokeh effects, changing the focus from multiple subjects to a single point, depending on where you point the lens. To flex your creative muscles, use the video editing ProRes feature. This will capture 4K footage in 30FPS on a 256GB handset, or 1080p on a 128GB model. Apple has probably opted for this arrangement due to the huge amounts of storage required by 4K video sequences.
