I recently cancelled Sky Q when my contract ended as they couldn't/wouldn't offer me anything near to what I was paying previously. I saw the Sky Stream promotion and decided to check it out. Here's my thoughts for anyone thinking of getting Stream...

    – The Sky Stream interface is focused towards watching streamed content rather than live content. You can watch live content but you can't have the device automatically show live channels on start up (like Sky Q). There's sometimes a bit of a delay when selecting a channel to stream but I've found switching to other streaming channels is fairly quick (a tad slower than Sky Q but not slow).
    – Ad skipping is the ability to fast forward and not the removal of adverts. You can use the remote to fast forward or voice to skip forward a specific time (e.g. one minute or 90 seconds) but the ads breaks are different lengths – sometimes just one advert – which makes it awkward to know how far to skip.
    – The restart live programmes is not always reliable and often takes you back to end of the previous show (before the credits). This is awkward if you're watching a channel with adverts as you can't fast forward (unless you've paid for the ad skipping upgrade). I've experienced several times when it went to the end of the previous programme, then played adverts and then skipped back to the end of the previous programme again and then I had to watch the adverts for a second time.
    – There's no recording on the device, you add streaming content to a playlist to watch later (assuming that it's still available to stream when you go to watch it). I read that some programmes are recorded to the cloud but I didn't experience this (perhaps because chosen content was available to stream). You can have multiple playlists if you live with others. It will open the app to watch the content (e.g. Channel 4 app opens and you have to accept terms before the content plays).
    – I didn't go for the UHD/Dolby Atmos upgrade (although I noticed there was an offer in my account for a free upgrade for four months). I'm surprised to say that I didn't notice that I didn't have UHD as the quality was really good. The UI was also really clear (you need to change the settings to UHD as it defaults to HD). I didn't get around to testing the sound without Dolby Atmos.
    – I noticed that I was getting personalised ads despite opting out for this. Perhaps the opting out is just related to Sky and they still use data from Google, Meta etc.
    – Sky Stream is better than Virgin Media Stream by a long shot - interface, speed and suggested content.
    – There's a fair bit of judder with moving text on Sky Stream - there's a setting which supposedly improves this but it didn't do much for me (mainly affects credits).

I think it's probably better to keep Sky Q if you already have this and watch mainly live channels and like to record and keep things for a while. If you mainly watch streamed content, then Sky Stream might be good for you as it is geared around streaming and gives you relatively easy access to live channels. If you only watch streamed content, then you might be better using your TV or getting FireTV or Apple TV box.

I've cancelled the Sky Stream (it was not this deal but one month free and then rolling contract at £29 a month). (edited)

I think the only one service in the world that allows to ad-skip is Channels DVR. It is 8 $ per month and requires you to set up a server on your computer. However unless you have some means to extract Sky channels URLs it will only work with terrestrial tv through HD Home RUN. I am surprised Manhattan didn’t do such feature as it should be not difficult to implement. Comskip is open source free tool that scans video and insert chapter marks where commercial started and it referencing them both by time signature or frame signature.

Don't forget to add on the extortionate hd, 4k remove ads and everything which comes as standard in most subs now. I had this offer through the post but worked out quite a bit more for extras. Don't get stung by the small print.
I phoned up sky who gave me an offer on sky q instead for £24 a month including movies and 4k content.

I do understand the irritation of Sky "add on" pricing. That is the same on this deal or any other Sky deal.

But if you are interested in Sky Stream this is the cheapest deal I can see available and it may also include a period of free broadband

I should add all those extras you are talking about are very clearly set out in the link (edited)

Sky TV is still a ripoff imo, even their NOW TV service undercuts it doesn't need a contract.
    Gandalf's avatar
    Author
You are right in that Now TV has everything Sky Stream has except for

    1. the user interface.
    2. Sky Stream comes with 1080p resolution as standard with 4K available at a price, whereas Now is limited to 720p or 1080p with a Boost pass.
    3. Stream has various other minor tech advantages

So from a functional perspective you can use Now TV but stream offers a superior viewing experience
  4. DiscoDave57's avatar
You have to return the box when you stop subscription

Seems more like Saruman posted this! Cold! Don't vote for Sky!
    Gandalf's avatar
    Author
We are not voting for Sky here. We can all have out views on Sky good bad or indifferent

This is about a good deal if you want to try Sky Stream which has a really good UI for Sky Ultimate and Freeview.
  6. arsenalchris's avatar
Can you watch netflixs on other devices in the house? Or just via Sky Stream?
    Gandalf's avatar
    Author
I do. You may have to pay for the increased devices. It is an option when taking the deal or you can upgrade afterwards
  7. ui5ir6m9be's avatar
Don’t forget to add £60 per month for 9 months for super fast broadband or £36 for normal broadband so it’s an extra £540 or £324 to add to that price. Then there is the 2 price increases in that 18 months. So you could be talking about that deal costing around £1000
    Gandalf's avatar
    Author
You don't have to take Sky Broadband. You can use any broadband.

And there is only one inflation increase in the 18 month period. Inflation applies every 12 months. So only one increase.

Given this deal is 27% cheaper than any other deal on the table right now you have to consider whether that one inflationary increase will be greater than 27% which seems unlikely

Or you have to consider whether even better deals may emerge. I am not sure of the answer to that one.

When I look at the deal again it seems to include a period of free broadband as well.

"Sky Entertainment 18 month contract. Sky Broadband Ultrafast+ or Superfast free for your first 9 months. Prices may change during this period."
    longbowassassin's avatar
Do you have to accept the broadband to qualify for the offer?
  9. cueball2370's avatar
if anyone was interested in the same package + superfast broadband for 18 months there is deal in TCB for £36 ( seems good for all that )
  10. paulmarton's avatar
Can you still record on it?
    dvs's avatar
No, you add content to playlists to stream later (like adding to a watch list in many apps). There is no recording on device at all (although I read that some programmes are stored in the cloud but not noticed this myself).
  11. ian72's avatar
Had Sky Stream if I am honest unless you want to watch the extra channels beyond digital freeview or main Sky channels NowTV is a better cheaper option. The included Netflix is just the basic option.
    longbowassassin's avatar
What did you think of the equipment and service?
  12. PJP007's avatar
So this comes with broadband or can you have it without?
    longbowassassin's avatar
Just called them on 0333 759 4279, they said you don't need to accept Sky broadband. Don't forget TCB £63.75, guy did say do I know any other sky customer because they can give £75 referral to you both. Also said you get 31 days cooling off period. Also, people having issues with stream usually due to broadband speed issues. Give them a call if you need anymore info..

We just cancelled during cooling off. It's a nice system and the picture quality is brilliant. There's just so many issues and bugs with the software and Sky - typically - are not fixing them, despite the number of people reporting them.
The Sky forum is full of posts about problems

I binned Sky Q about 6 months ago and they phoned me up offered me the entire sky stream package including sports movies and Netflix for £30 a month. Still turned it down
  16. seanmc172's avatar
I've managed to trial this for 2 months for free was hesitant to sign up for 18 due to ? performance. However after trialling the stream more than two months can say no performance issues and apps actually open quicker than my LG web Os. 2021 nanocell, have managed to agree 9 month half price 9 month full price with sky (edited)

When a deal looks like a deal but the hidden extra costs make it not a deal
  18. longbowassassin's avatar
I did consider taking up this offer but the negative comments towards Sky and its streaming service is really putting me off...
    euanshoosmith's avatar
I wouldn't if i was you, I was so sceptical, aerial broke before Xmas, had this since, it's been perfect and beyond expectations
  19. KenKorda's avatar
A pretty poor deal (as the lack of heat demonstrates)

    Netflix basic - £7 a month
Now TV Entertainment pass - I'm currently on £4 a month, but have been on £5 a month for last 2 years as per their standard retention offer.

Also, the first review I googled summarised with "We’d like to see the Sky Stream get a boost in processing power so that it’s slightly less slow"

This doesn't really sound as though "Stream has various other minor tech advantages"
    euanshoosmith's avatar
Forgetting it gives you live TV with no aerial on a TV without iPlayer/ itv apps
  20. wrongmark's avatar
The fast forward and rewind controls on both live tv and streams are an absolute nightmare. Apart from that, and the occasional glitches, I think it’s probably the best user experience for premium channels with very good video quality. I’m paying £52 for everything except movies. (edited)
  21. Bst_gt92's avatar
Very buggy piece of kit, decent when it works but ends up buffering and crashing more than displaying a picture. Returned after the months trial.
  22. mo.undertake's avatar
I cancelled as soon as they charged £5 to fast forward best thing i ever did
    slimjimjim80's avatar
    They did what?
    You can't be serious!

I've not used sky since dish-old days. Remember them trying to charge extra for HD which was hilarious.
  23. jamiebradleylewis's avatar
Sky is a total ripoff even at this price.
  24. chrispaps12's avatar
    Virgin Stream has:

TNT Sports £10 per month 30 day contract in UHD.
SKY TV £8 per month SKY Sports at £18.75 per month 30 day contract HD included plus an extra 10% off.(Remember because 30 day contracts you can cancel when the football season finishes).
You can also get 10% off Netflix and Disney plus.(Netflix don’t do discounts).
Everything with Virgin Stream comes with HD or UHD included no extra fees like sky charges is well.
I like the flexibility is well you cancel any of the above packages with 30 days notice.
    Sebastian_Szwarc's avatar
I think UK still cannot figure it out like in US. If you buy TNT sports separately Sky should recognize that and allow you to watch. If you have TNT via Sky then it should allow to authorize using operator credentials inside TNT app. I asked once Sky customer service why it does not work like in US but they have no clue obviously they were not trained about what TV Everwyhere is.

Does anyone know if I would be Sky VIP eligible with just Sky Stream?
    DJN2020's avatar
sky VIP is applicable. It's worthless though just a psychological trick.

Just been offered renewal of Sky Q TV, Sports, Cinema, Netflix, Multiroom, HD package for £62 a month. Internet speed rubbish in our village so Sky Stream a no-go. Any thoughts on this being a good deal ?
    horizon-in's avatar
Its reasonable, but not the best. You can push them for lower price. I managed to get all above plus UHD pack, but no multi room in 44/month.Multi room was another 7.50 but I didn’t needed one. It’a Sky Q 1TB box. (edited)

What were the performance issues? I have certainly noticed minor glitches but performances issues pretty much disappeared when I upgraded my network

I've had my sky q box replaced and the 2 minis don't work well at all anymore...co stantly lose signal....you do.t happen to be aware this can be an issue with newer sky q do you?
  30. chrispaps12's avatar
Virgin media stream costs less than sky stream and has only 30 day contracts.
    dvs's avatar
Virgin Media Stream is only available with Virgin Media broadband so may not be an option for many. I have Virgin Media for broadband and I got given their Stream box for free. Unlike Sky Stream, the box works without a TV subscription (Freeview type channels). The Sky Stream service is far superior imo (but more expensive though). Although Virgin Media give you 10% back on subscriptions, I think Apple TV box and FireTV sticks are better for streaming than the Virgin Media box,
  31. Chigz_'s avatar
Not a bad deal I suppose, cost breakdown is probably like; £5 for Netflix, £10 for Entertainment and £5 for the puck.

If only there was a Freeview alternative, I’d hop to it. Especially for the parents.
  32. AJtheCabbage's avatar
Does anyone know if Sky Steam has working subtitles?
  33. kirkhousesean's avatar
Sky stream is terrible we cancelled ours very quickly, the Box is slow and sluggy and the remote failed on us
    euanshoosmith's avatar
Absolute lies, it works perfectly for me and reviews are surprisingly favourable on all points mentioned
  34. LeeWorrall's avatar
I currently have Sky Stream trial for 2 months, I rang up to cancel and they still let me watch free for a month before it cancels on 3rd October.
I rang up yesterday to ask if I can uncancel and have this deal, they said no. I said what do you mean no? There's no deals on your account. What?
He said I'd have to cancel, send this puck back, then rejoin as a new customer, receive new puck. Really? He sounded frustrating saying it tbh, like it was out of his hands. Ridiculous. I wanted Sky Stream with movies for £27 but they won't even take my money
  35. Jon_Red's avatar
No hate to the author for bringing what he perceives to be a deal, but Sky are Utter Crap. As is Netflix. I don’t know why anyone would pay for such greedy corps when there are far, FAR cheaper alternatives.
  36. Tryp's avatar
The add-on to make catch-up programmes advert-free is particularly infuriating.
  37. i8thepie's avatar
is there a sky go function if you go away can you still access your channels, will it chrome cast? etc
    lostinthewoods's avatar
Yes Sky Go works but not in the same way as with Sky Q. You can watch your channels, but that's it. There's no continuity between the box and the app so you can't pick up a show where you left off from your TV.
No you can't cast it to a TV etc that's all locked down
  38. john_william's avatar
They now have add skipping and they charge £5 extra for your troubles as an addon
    dvs's avatar
Annoyingly, the skip adverts add-on doesn’t stop the ads even on on demand content, you need to manually fast forward using remote or voice. The advert breaks are also different lengths, sometimes just one ad, sometimes several minutes.
  39. Sebastian_Szwarc's avatar
When they finally stop forcing people to get Netflix in bundle?
  40. DJN2020's avatar
This isn't accessible to existing customers....

Found this deal after I had signed up, and it is £14 cheaper per month like for like. I called to explre the possibility of them matching but they won't do it.

Is there any way around this? Cancel the account and sign up in a different name? (edited)
