One of the lowest - if not the lowest - prices around for a gas boiler service contract. British Gas has mixed reviews, as do all the national companies, and frankly you're better off with a local gas engineer you trust, but they don't tend to offer service contracts anywhere near this price.

Unusually, no limits put on the cost of repairs - including parts and labour.

These are the essentials - full contract details are in the PDFs on the website.

Boiler & Controls Breakdown Cover

Things we cover
  • Repairs to your gas boiler and controls, including your thermostat and programmer
  • All parts and labour
  • Up to £1,000 to gain access and make good for each repair

Things we don't cover
  • Anything that happens within the first 14 days of you taking out the product
  • Removing sludge or scale or repairing the damage it causes if we tell you it might be a problem for your system or boiler
  • Showers or taps
  • Annual service of your boiler to make sure it's running safely and efficiently
  • Accidental Damage
  • Repairs to the central heating system, including radiators
  • Faults caused by someone else you used for repairs or design faults

There is a £99 excess to be aware of - unsurprising at this price, and given how much these contracts normally cost.

From British Gas:

"This means you'd pay £99 for each completed repair, but if you don't have any repairs then there'd be no excess to pay."

When you call them out, they often decommission your boiler for not being fitted properly or being unsafe and not to regulation etc. It’s far easier and cheaper for them to do that then fix issues.

We had an inset coal effect gas fire. It was heavily used up to the point we noticed the burner that ran along the front of it was cracked though it seemed to have no effect on operation and nothing was showing up on the carbon monoxide detectors we had fitted, one of which was in the same room as the fire.

Even to me with a cursory glance it looked broken but it took British Gas engineers three years and three services to notice the steel perforated burner drum had a corroded crack running though it before they yellow tagged the fire and capped off its gas supply.

The conditions say no replacement is offered if your boiler is over 7 years. There's a risk on an older boiler that they just say replacement is needed.

The only time they can say a boiler is beyond repair is if it's on what's known internally as a 'reduced service list', as in the part/s you require are unavailable.
Otherwise they'll endeavour to repair it.
In my 9 years working for them I only knew of one boiler being replaced because it was under 7 years old and beyond repair.
Everything else we had to fix no matter what.
That doesn't mean faults were always correctly diagnosed, or repaired first time, but the eventual outcome would be the boiler being repaired to working condition.

The person spamming: 'But they can say it’s been installed incorrectly, it’s unsafe, and decommission your boiler!'
    Is talking nonsense.

We had a service plan until recently. 2 years Ago they serviced it and it then broke 1 month later got a local engineer in and he sorted it out. His opinion was they should have spotted it on a 'service' and really all they did was a gas safety check. BG seem to also be subcontracting all this work out. If I was a suspicious person I would say they only do the minimal that by law they have to because they have opened the boiler up and any safety issues would be on them.
If a boiler is newish and still under warranty servicing is worth doing but I would always try to get the company that installed it back. This is not always easy as servicing is A)boring and B) not the lucrative and I've had issues with this in the past. If a boiler is out of warranty and getting close to 10 years old Most gas engineers would recommend replacing anyway and I don't blame them because anything safety related going wrong would be on them as the last person to touch it. I always feel the best option is to just save the money in a bank account for when things like this do eventually need some work.

Exact same happened to me with BG, the boiler 'service' took 20mins, broke 6 weeks later, and a local engineer took an hour to service and fix common issues with my boiler

I'm only paying £2.50 for mine

Me too. But new policies have increased to £3.50.

I'm guessing you have to get your boiler serviced annually in order for this to be valid? And they'll probably go around and disconnect your hot water and your gas fire because the smoke took 1 second too long to come out of the chimney

I was just about to ask the same question. I don’t service mine every year but when I went to sign up there was no mention of this

I'd say most of these companies do the same. You get into problem and you call them. They told you they are very busy and will come next week. Then on the day either they will tell you that your boiler is too old, it was not serviced regularly and possibly it is dangerous (even with a new boiler) or the flu was not installed properly. they will put a do not use sticker and you will be paying someone else.

My advice, find a local gas safe engineer and pay them instead. Will save you a lot of money and stress.

Avoid like the plague! We had BG come to check our boiler and decommissioned it. The bloke didn't have a clue and his "supervisor" was in the van. We called him in to confirm the decision and he looked at the other bloke, looked at boiler, looked at his phone, wandered out whilst muttering "no good".

Two days later we paid good money for a proper gas certified plumber to service the "decommissioned" boiler. "Third one today mate - they're muppets".

So what was the problem with our boiler? Nothing at all - worked fine, was regularly serviced before we signed up for their plan. Was just a service and they couldn't be arsed and wanted more money.

Our plumber just serviced, certified it fit for operation, and went away with an extra 50 quid in his pocket as a thank you.

Still fighting to get our money back from BG who still insist the boiler should not be used.
    leel246's avatar
What did they write on the job report you should have received? Would be interested to know.
It's normally only made safe if deemed to be at risk or immediately dangerous.

Best paying independent engineer, these guys may come out but some many caveats will end up not covering and your boiler service will consist of someone taking off the cover looking at it for 5 mins, blowing in it then putting your cover on and will then bid you good day

Up to a point I’d agree with you, but having a very elderly but perfectly decent Worcester Bosch boiler I know the spares are easily available but I also know how expensive they are. You’re not paying for a service with this - no surprise at £42 for the year - just the insurance element. I see it as an insurance premium against repairs costing potentially several hundred pounds on an ageing boiler.

Would not touch them with a barge pole after danger tagging my boiler because the instructions for it on their computers was wrong model ( Their filing error )
  10. 1mran's avatar
Why pay any money to have a franchise plumber come and condemn your boiler. They should be paying you
    leel246's avatar
    They're mostly direct labour.

I have a British Gas Service Plan which covers my boiler and radiators and they have always been fantastic with me. In Feb of 2021, in the midst of Winter and during lockdown my gas boiler broke down around 8pm in the evening. I called them, gave them the error code which the boiler was stating and they were at my house in 45 mins with a new motherboard (which would normally cost £300) and it was fixed. I live in London. My boiler is a Valiant boiler from 2006. In fact, in the most recent annual service, the BG engineer said my boiler on the inside still looked like new! (edited)

I have had this cover for 5 years and one year I cancelled as they wanted to increase.

Got a combi boiler valiant ecotec now 12 years so they tell me.

My boiler has broken down twice while being covered. First time just after buying the house.

First time they put over £700 of new parts into it cost me the excess of £200.
A local heat engineer came first said more economical to have a new boiler.

Last month, it broke down on the same day got someone to come over to fix it. Amazing service all done on the APP.

Cost me only £99 in excess and the new part which was covered would of cost me £500 as a heat exchanger.

Saved me a hell of a lot of money gives peace of mind.

First time broke wouldn't of been able to put in a new boiler as just bought the house.

I highly recommend this cover if you have a combi boiler.
    cossy3's avatar
On the flip side, I imagine they want the £99 from you on any visit so they'll make up any excuse to say a part needs to be replaced, false economy.
  13. j1mm's avatar
£99 excess per call out. Cheaper to use a local company and steer clear of BG
    rimalpatel007's avatar
In my experience it was 99 per issue. In one case, took few visits to resolve the issue. So money well spent.

No way would I let them in the house  (edited)

£99 excess 23.50 a month for no excess
    Kartnet's avatar
They do sometimes offer a non excess option
  16. al355's avatar
Anyone know if this includes cover for older boilers? Mines around 15 years old but working well
    russ1978's avatar
It’ll ask you before your quote how old the boiler is
  17. TristanDeCoonha's avatar
You can't buy it if renting. Although when would they check?
So if you have a crap landlord, then you could be stuck without heating, and no option to cover it yourself.
    megastream's avatar
There is no way of knowing if you are a homeowner or tenant when taking out a policy, it's just a discretionary tick box question.

Cover for landlords is usually more.
  18. Moss.b's avatar
Excess is way to high. Guess if you suspect boiler is on the way out then might be worth it.
    InitMate's avatar
Perfect timing. Mine has an error code popped up

Either I renew home care cover for 17.50 per month for 12 months with a 60 quid excess (£270) or buy this 3.50 per month for 12 months and pay the 99 quid excess (£141). No brainer and save myself £129.

    Happy Days

I had this conver for 3yrs (2.50/month) when i moved in to my property which had a 12yr old boiler. Each year i paid the excess and the engineer would fix the same issue. On the third year they sent the parent manufacturer who spent £500 on this boiler. 6 months later it broke down and spent nearly 2k on a new boiler with boxt.

I had a service contract with them for several years but decided to cancel as it was too expensive. My boiler broke down a month or so after I cancelled so I called a local firm to fix it which they did. When the engineer fixed it he said that if had not been serviced properly in previous years resulting in a build of residue which was solid, he actually took pictures of it and sent them to me so that I could complain to British Gas. The boiler was supposedly serviced by British Gas every year!!

It's in the main description of course, and you wouldn't really expect it to be included for £42 a year on top of the unlimited repair cover.

Inevitably, of course, it’s only the horror stories about the occasional bad experience with British Gas that get posted - quite understandably of course if you’ve been adversely affected. But it’s an extremely large company with a very large percentage of the market. Tens of thousands of customers. It would be odd not to get some complaints.

Most people keep going back year after year after year though, and the good experiences rarely get mentioned. If they were as bad as suggested here they’d have gone out of business a long time ago.

And this wouldn’t be anything like as positive! Any problems, and Trustpilot very quickly goes very, very negative:

For those foolish enough to be with Utility Warehouse, be aware you get a free boiler service per year of subscription, so make use of it before you jump ship

I have a contract for £15/m about to double, would I be better off with this if I can get it? Started the contract a year ago when I had a problem of it cutting out, turned out that a wire was shorting and fixed in a few minutes. Local tech referred through the BG site previously couldn’t find the fault.

Or is BG negotiable on renewals?
    SJM20's avatar
Did you have any luck negotiating your renewal? My cover is due to end next week. Also currently paying £15/m and it will be pretty much double if i renew. I have what I think is now called the Repair and Cover protection. Doesn't look like any cost saving to renew as the price matches the same price online so I think I might just leave it to run out and then book it again if any issues with the boiler.
