Great lens. Turns a Nikon DSLR into a 'point and shoot'. You really cannot get it wrong.

That link doesn't work

Boasting about my D4? Hardly. You probably don't want to hear about my Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 then... lol

85mm f1.4D is excellent lens, sold metal build. Usage depends on the individual requirement and affordability. As you mentioned yo like object to be standout, this lens does good job. Only drawback is as I mentioned most of Nikon's D lenses looses sharpness when they are wide open. I always say if you can't afford the expensive lenses then better shoot in RAW and learn Adobe Photoshop.

Just ordered one of these. As a strictly family pics snapper i have fancied a prime lens for a while and going with the reviews this fits the bill perfectly for the money. Many thanks to OP , heat added . (y)

For landscape your current 18-55 kit lens is good enough, get a polarising filter for it and you will see a big improvement. For photos at family functions etc I would get the Nikon AF-S 35mm f/1.8G DX I would be aiming to snipe one for around the £100 mark in excellent condition on eBay. You will be able to take amazing pictures indoors at functions without a flash and your pictures will look so natural and warm. You will get a nice bokeh (blurry background) which makes your subject really stand out, I like lights in the background that can work well. You will be able to sell it on with little or no loss when you are done with it. The kit lens goes down to 18mm which is pretty wide angle for landscape. Nikon do a 10-20mm DX zoom landscape/wide angle but it costs £300. If I wanted wider I would just use a phone with a very good camera (Samsung S8 £150+ for a 2nd hand one with a cracked screen). Just my opinion... :) I once wanted to get the Nikon 14mm prime (£1400) to do wide angle but came to my senses as I wouldn’t have used it enough to get the value so I went with the 24-70 2.8 (£1100) and it has been to Australia, America, Spain, Greece etc and taken great family pictures and I haven’t regretted it. However I am now thinking of selling the 24-70 zoom and just getting a range of 1.8 fx primes because they offer the best performance/value ratio for a hobbyist and since I have kept my D7000 body (I have D610) I can carry 2 cameras with a 1.8 prime on each and get better pictures than if just carrying a zoom on 1 camera.

Oneday77: What does it not do that you want it to? If you want better image quality but a similar range to what you have. Look for a 17-55mm f2.8. The DX pro lens. I'm still relatively new to photography, only had my D5100 for 2years. I've only got the basic 18-55mm lens. At the moment, I've been just capturing photos at family functions, and the occasional day out somewhere like Alton Towers. I would like a better lens to help take photos in low light at family functions, and an additional lens for landscape photography, for when I go to the countryside like at farms and theme parks etc.

It depends on what type of photography you are interested in. 18-55 is a basic kit lens but good enough for general everyday family pics. If you like the 18-55mm lens but want to upgrade from kit lens inn the same range. I have Sigma 17-50mm 2.8 lens and pic quality is absolutely wonderful. Having 2.8 aperture will give you smoothly blured back ground "Bokeh" and enable low light photography. I also have Nikon 35mm 1.8 lens and it is a fantastic light weight lens. Very fast and 1.8 aperture is brilliant. As you have Crop sensor DSLR 35mm is equivalent of 50mm that every one talk about it on YouTube.

What does it not do that you want it to? If you want better image quality but a similar range to what you have. Look for a 17-55mm f2.8. The DX pro lens.

Please note that this lens will work wonders only on good lighting, eventhough VR might help a bit but still decent lighting a must. This is a compromise which is acceptable for most given the versatile nature of covering full range.

Expired for me What body would go well with this? Edit - if this is the same item, available here I think

1-3 month delivery though, although I know Amazon usually fulfil sooner than time stated. Great price for a versatile DX lens.

Lowest price according history from Camera Price Buster. I got 18-55 and Nikon AF-P 70-300mm VR. Still tempted. For the versatility.

Great price for this lens, it's nearly £200 more at most places. John Lewis seem to be price matching, may be worth looking there for a 2 year warranty. Hot!

Great bang for you pound. Pretty much flawless AF and VR in Botswana this year and not too heavy or unwieldy.

A constant f5.6 as opposed to the usual f5.6-f6.3 at this range.

Still very good for this focal length. If you're looking at f2.8, or even f4, you'll be looking at spending thousands more.

Was gonna get the Nikon but ended up with Sigma 150-600 lens and can highly recommend it as a cheaper alternative!

For some reason I was never notified about your reply. Thanks a lot it's been really helpful, I will have a look at those and try to pick something for him. Thanks a lot:)!

In that case I can suggest a few bodies a D3100, on MPB for £94. This will have good image quality and is probably what the majority of the people in his class are using. But if he decides that he wants to do it further then it is likely that he will swap the body as he will want more features. A D300, £159 on MPB, this will last him a while as the layout is superior to the D3100, is better built and has a great autofocus system. Though if he is new to DSLR,s and doesn't know how about manual modes and how to use them it will confuse and he will not get on with it. The last option is the D90, £159 on MPB, the best all rounder. If it was me and I was choosing for someone who I do not know the ability get the D90, but seriously consider the D300 if he is thinking about perusing further than just a photography class, for example degree level or as career. In terms of lenses at this stage look on eBay for an 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 VR on bid or buy it now for around £40 mark. In regards 50mm let him decide as to whether or not he wants or needs it as only his photography style will be able to dictate that. Hope this helps you out, the world of DSLR's can be very daunting and confusing.

Thanks for all the help so far, I would ideally be looking to spend up to 150 quid on that, but could probably stretch to 200. Don't mind 2nd hand as I am aware I wont get new set at this price point:) Thanks!

Well if you are looking for the absolute cheapest set you will looking at something along the lines of the Nikon D70 or Canon EOS 40D, slightly more expensive then the D70. And with the D70 something like the Nikkor 18-55 F/3.5-5.6, this is the kit that I started out with. Though i would strongly recommend to get a 50mm F/1.8D as well, as this is a lens that will him forever. D70 50mm 18-55mm Obviously the more that you spend the better the kit that you will get, though most beginners will not need anything more than this. If you are looking for new kit you will be spending a lot more but in cases you can loose features, for example the D70 is capable of using much older lenses then the current D3000 series and 5000 series Nikon DSLR. But the image quality is going to be worse. If you tell me your budget I will be able to suggest the best possible kit for your brother!

Hi, I am looking for a dslr for my younger brother for his photography classes at school, i doubt he would need any particularly complex setup, probably a basic dslr for beginners + lens, the cheaper the better.can You recommend some setup to go for please? I have no clue at all about cameras, other than they take photos lol. Thanks for help Mat

It's a Grey Import so not the same deal as posted. Deal posted will come with Nikon UK Warranty and support.

As I can't find a UK registered address fro E-Finity or a VAT number on their website, I presume that it is a grey import. The price above as far as I am aware is for a registered UK supplier. I won't get into discussions on Grey import vs non as it has been gone over many times before all over the web. Yes you can get cheaper via grey import, the question is whether it is appropriate for the individual concerned. For a UK market lens, in my opinion it is a very good price.

Same, checked tracker a couple of days back and it proudly announced the order had been cancelled. Not so much as an email from jessops and my PayPal was still pending. Is it really? Canon has superior build quality to Sony. And all DSLRs are geared up to get the shot; whereas mirrorless cameras just seem to be for those who take a couple of shots at the weekend. You will never see a pro or anyone who is very serious about photography using a Sony. I am not saying that they are bad cameras for the size and portability because I do admire sony; however I don't see the point in sticking a huge L lens on a small body, it just defeats the purpose doesn't it?
