I have this laptop, It's good but I wouldn't buy it again if I had the choice, the fans as noisy as sin and rattle if you move it at all.

Just do a clean install and don't install any HP crapware. Anyway HP use 15W TDP Ryzen Mobile version compared to Huawei Matebook D's 25W TDP version. So HP cannot maintain the clock speed as good as Huawei. Also HP system is bloody hard to open and replace the ssd. HP also have single heatpipe cooling system vs Huawei's two heatpipe cooling system. Thermal performance play key part in cpu turbo boost. Unless you need to use touch pad, go with Huawei.

Just hate the HP updates

Great price.

Hey! Thanks for the mini review. Much appreciated. I've done some further research/comparison which might help sway things: Screen brightness: Acer: 231nits | HP: 300nits Warranty: Acer: 1yr | HP: 3yrs Speakers: Acer: Dual | HP: Quad They're both great machines (y)

I'm undecided to be honest. I've had a play with both at my local Currys (although the swift had the i5-8250u) and this is what I felt. HP - more premium design, dedicated graphics, better reported battery life, micro SD card reader. Acer - larger and nicer screen (looked much brighter to me), updated processor, lighter, full size USB ports, dedicated HDMI out. The swift does have a fingerprint reader as well. Both keyboards were nice although very different, not much travel on the Acer compared to the HP. The HP has collapsible USB ports and I don't know how these would hold up over time. There's not much between them to be honest, both very good laptops. I'm leaning more towards the Acer as I prefer the screen and don't need the dedicated graphics really. See if you can get to Currys and have a look at them both.

Which one would you go for? The HP has the Nvidia GPU whereas the Swift 5 has the integrated Intel GPU. The HP has a fingerprint reader and may be a better speaker setup (although the Swift also has good speakers tuned by Dolby).

The updated swift 5 with an i5 8265u is the same price as this on the Acer store at the moment if you add the voucher. And it's not gold! https://uk-store.acer.com/swift-5-ultra-thin-touch-sf514-53t-grey

Does it not bother anyone that you have to replace colour cartridges if only one colour has run out? Obviously this is only an issue for people not subscribing to instant ink.

Yes, but not for a full year free. Depending on the model, its something between 2 to 6 months free trial.

Yeah I unpacked mine and enrolled by 23:50 (highfive)

As I recall, for 12months free ink trial purchase had to be made by 31 May - you had 7 days to enroll for the free ink ie until 7/6/19 so pretty sure it has now expired

Has two cartridges tricolour and black, so at least you can change black separately, and printing colour should use the different colour inks roughly equally. You have to do the maths I suppose, to come to a conclusion. But it seems that for everyday use, if you are printing mainly photos, the instantink service is the way to go, even at full price. There are still offers with instantink free months or credit.

This or a canon mg5750 ? Doesn't this use a tricolour cartridge, meaning if you run out of one colour (after free ink is over), you need a whole new cartridge? I've missed the instant ink deal and have no intention of deliberately adding to landfill by replacing a printer every time I need to replace cartridges.

You may be able to direct the printer to use your phone as a hotspot. I'm no expert on that. It may be different on different phones and phone operating systems. During setup when it asks for the wifi you may be able to direct to your phone's hotspot. Someone else, more technologically savvy, may know more. Regards and best of luck!

I would say yes. They have WiFi direct I believe. I would also say you could use phone as hotspot possibly another way of connecting.

Does anyone know if I can use my mobile data to print wirelessly without WiFi?

ok tell a lie, log onto the hp instank ink web page. go to myaccount. pick heavy use. i know it says £17.99 but just bloody click it. then you will get a green text at the top. You have 13 FREE months remaining. Billing for your plan pages will start on 2 Jul 2020. if you click on home to go back, you will see, "No charges for up to 700 pages per month during Free Trial months." i have extra month as got a referal code off amazon when initially signed up. ta da. 700 pags to print like a mad man.

it looks like you need to select the heavy use plan when subscribing for the first time with instant ink. im goign to call hp tomorrow. if not will box it back up and take back to currys

My printer got delivered last week. I seen the 12 months free offer when exploring hp online on the day i set it up but today it showed just 3 months when i tried to sign-up (still within 7 days of setting-up the printer). So called HP and eventually they given me 15 months free. Just mentioning, in case it helps someone.

I don't think they'd have any way of knowing then, so I guess that in practice it just means register by June 7th (as per the Curry's website.)

I haven't need to at all, it just gets recognised automatically.

Ah ok, I've tried on Twitter but no response so far. Have people who've registered for the offer had to provide proof of purchase date?

Fair enough, I would contact hp directly, they are pretty good on the Web chat sirvice they have.

I would personally got for the new HP Envy 5010 directly from Amazon (https://amzn.to/2V2gSXi) to get the full warranty and also the 13 months Ink promotion :) Free prints with inks up to 300 pages for the next 13 months...

Hmm... Just checked and its still available for me to do it... For the time being anyway lol. It's a shame I had to buy a new printer too save on costs but it was a bargain.

I don't think you can downgrade to the free pack. - You have to choose it at initial set up our not at all. You can, of course, downgrade to any other (paying) package.

That's for the 5010 not the 5030. I got delivered with prime the 5030 with 12 months free ink for £45 I've picked the 300page option per month. I was paying 3.49 a month for 100 sheets before.... Ive this stops I can pick the 15 page option for free unless I want to pay a higher package

Without a doubt a better deal as this one only comes with a 3 month warranty instead of the two years at John Lewis.... and yet people vote it hot but I suspect they haven’t even checked the deal.

To update, I did not see the free 12 months when I tried to enroll from my smartphone via app, or from chromebook via instantink. I did not enroll from these two. 123 hp was not available on chromebook. It was only when I went to enroll from app on Win 10 PC that I immediately had access to the 12 month trial . I also purchased from AMazon post the 30 April date and still had access to the free trial. i hope this helps others. I also tried the code freeink but it did not seem to have worked.

I am also not getting the free trial. I tried to set up printer with the app, but it went wrong during setup. All done now but I cannot get any free trial at all. Going to phone HP on Monday. I have not completed the instaink registration as each time I try I get no mention of free ink. Anyone else successfully work out how to do it once it fails? I tried through the app and on chromebook through instaink as hp 123 not supported on chromebook.

I was worried like you but again I didn't had anything to loose, I could have just return it back. I would advise to set it up as soon as you can, claim a free ink because you never know what happen next. If you try it in 14 days and if it doesn't work, you can atleast return it back to seller.

i bought this printer on the 30th April. Have not switched it on yet. Hopefully this deal is definitely 7 days after turning on printer and not 7 days after purchase. Im abit worried that packaging and paperwork seem to only talk about 2 months free trial (confused)

If you have missed to enter a promo code or if you didn't see any option for free months trial then don't worry you can still claim free ink. This is what worked for me. Make sure you are connected the printer to network Login to hp ink service and enrol the printer, create new account or you can use existing acount. select a free plan and complete the process. After a moment , Go back and select 300 pages package, trial offer should automatically be picked up by the system. Atleast that's what worked for me. Good luck.

I think the £5 voucher for £50 spend offer at Argos has ended now. Can't see any mention on their website.

The 6230 model may be slightly faster as it has 1.2 Ghz processor and the 5010/5030 have a 800Mhz processor. The 6230 has 704 black nozzles/print head and 2052 Colour nozzles (684 per colour slot) The 5010/5030 has 328 black nozzles/print head and 588 colour nozzles Although both sets of printers use the same Black/Colour ink cartridges, I am guessing the 6230 has a marginally better print quality.Feel free to correct me if I am wrong

Thanks for your help

Just received my first instant ink delivery; quite surprised that the packet didn't fit through my letterbox and had to be collected from the post office instead.

I suspect your home router doesn't allow connections to your printer from the internet. The IP address your phone users to communicate with the printer when you're on WiFi at home is a private IP (probably the same range used in everybody's houses), but when your are on the internet it would be a complete different address. Your router normally translates between the two, but you wouldn't normally allow your printer (or many other devices) to be internet accessible? Obviously "SMART" internet of things devices behave differently, like security cameras etc to specifically allow internet access to authorised users, but these so introduce potential internet security problems.

Is it normal that the HP Smart app can't "see" the printer when you're away from your home WiFi? The screen below shows my printer and its ink levels when I'm at home on WiFi, but not over 4g or away from home, as in the screenshot. Seems to be an odd limitation if this is true.

I’m already on a 7 months free plan. After that it’s somthing like £10/month. Is there any way can buy this printer and use the ‘voucher’ to extend my current plan or would I need to stat again using this printer?

Note that you only get 7 days from installation to set up the free trial. Been caught out with that myself

Bought one of these, that are supposedly A1 graded, which by their own words means "as new". I didn't even manage to get through windows setup before the fan started to fail spectacularly, which brings into question whether they even test the "refurbished" systems they're selling, let alone refurbish them. Either that or they have extraordinarily low quality assurance standards. Have submitted a return request, will see where it goes from here. I would strongly urge avoiding this deal for the time being. Update: Still waiting for them to even action my return request, most likely gonna have to repair the laptop myself. Their customer support is the worst I have ever dealt with, they were faster to send me an email about upgrading to their extended warranty than they were to actually honour said warranty. Hopefully this will save someone a lot of time and money, especially someone without the knowledge to do laptop repairs for them self, as you'll receive no support from this company seemingly after they have your money.

Mine came yesterday too, great machine. Does your capslock key occasionally flash when starting up then the computer doesn't boot? I've flashed a BIOS update over it this morning but can't test extensively because I'm at work. Also when in tablet mode if I tilt the device it sounds like the fan starts groaning.

Was this £600 on the HP store? I started looking around in September/October and it's been at £699 on the HP Store every time I've looked except for Black Friday. We bought ours from Amazon at £649 and the price has been as low as £649 or £640 if you include marketplace sellers according to camelcamelcamel. The build quality on this model is very good. The Pavilion range is certainly built to a price and best avoided IMO, but there's nothing wrong with the build quality on this laptop. Hinges are solid and smooth. Material quality is fantastic and compares favourably with more expensive laptops.

Is HP build quality good enough to risk £650 on a convertble? Or will it break or begin to fall apart at Warranty + 1 month?
