If its been enough time since your last playthrough I think it is. They added orchestrated music (much better then the Midi ones in og), 2D sections, new scenes and a load really nice QoL updates like being able to transmog costume armor instead of having to equip the armour itself.
I already have the non S version, which I'm told has superior graphics to the S version, due to not being a Nintendo Switch port. Is the extra content worth replacing the original version?
I noticed amazon had it at £19.99 this morning so guessing they have priced matched (y)
Its also £16.99 on Amazon with prime it looks like.
Thanks. Shopto let me down when they were selling it for £16.85 during the recent DQ sale. It never arrived and I've been checking prices since then.
Got this free on gamepass for Xbox on release day, great game, like a minecraft RPG.
Great game this and an excellent price! Only gripe is its a shame it never get a swansong PS Vita release as the first game was just so convinient to have on the go and visually looked on par with the PS4 version.
Great price - heat :) I really enjoyed this one... More so than DQB1. The campaign is a good length and never leaves you wondering what you have to do and there's plenty to keep you amused after the story ends (y)
you love to see it. Thanks Mixi (y)
Never miss a 'Dragon Quest' deal again!

Is this deal still available in store? (Its an awfully long way away for me to pop down and check)
They didn't have any in the GAME near me, sadly, but I did notice they have Astral Chain for £14.99 if anyone is looking for that..? They didn't have any in stock for me when I took the case up to the counter, though (excited)
Without wanting to send anyone on a wild goose chase, I bought this instore in game for £14.99 earlier in the week, was brand new stickered as sale, didn't realise it was a great price at the time but it may be worth sticking your head in if you are passing
Good find @Joshua_Horne - thanks for taking time to share (nice first deal) :)
In the minority here, but i thought the game was mediocre at best. Finished the game on Game Pass including Act 3. It was my 1 DQ game and will probably be my last. And yes the music is sooooo awful, coming from the same comapny that does FF music its crazy. I saw a YT video of why the music is awful and its to do with some old guy stuck in his ways and has some straglehold with a contract with SE.
In that case, definitely get the new S Definitive version. It is easy but a few bosses gave me a hard time and I had to grind a bit before defeating them, can't imagine how much more time I would have wasted playing the original game...
So the new version has less grinding? I ask because I have a busy life with no time to waste doing pointless grinding.
The new version is much easier - would base the above decisions on that fact alone, prefer an easy ride and a great game = new edition, prefer a challenge and more grindy JRPG? = this version. To each their own, but I did find the definitive edition far too easy from start to finish
"Gameboy version" who hurt you?
Slightly?? It's night and day the new version looks like a ps3 game in comparison. Not to mention the new versions so-called QOL improvements actually ruins a lot of the game like you can buy everything you need at your camp which you can now summon anywhere so you no longer need to explore to find the materials you need making it far too easy and a lot less fun as exploring and finding the ingredients for upgrading was part of the games charm. But to each his own, if you want the Gameboy version and the handholding included then I say go for the newer way more expensive version. If you prefer a more gritty JRPG then this is definitely the better version IMO. It's all about what you prefer as a gamer I suppose. It's ironic though as I hate games like Dark souls but love more difficult JRPGs as I love the grind but thats cause i'm old school lol.
Exactly, the game has several points which could be an "ending" but then it just continues. I didn't finish DQ11 either, I got to an ending, but then there was post game stuff to do for another ending, and the fact that your levels get reduced irked me to the point that I just stopped. The game is definitely all of the things you mentioned, but it does stink of length for length's sake - the fact that halfway through the story, you basically have to explore every area you've already explored again, that sort of thing. I didn't know about the design philosophy but it certainly makes sense...
Just when you think it’s almost over, it just carries on! I do like them for what they are. They’re unique. They feel good to play. Really well translated and localised. Genuinely humorous. Very whimsical. And quite an interesting story. They’re like a childhood fantasy adventure, the sort of thing you’d imagine at the park or in your back garden, bought to life. I remember playing the PS2 one (8 I think) and one on the DS. And of course this. And they’re all like it. They’re good. But neither the story or the gameplay has enough steam to hold your interest for the ridiculous length. They just get a bit stale towards the end. And the end isn’t even the end! Now that I’m thinking about it, I’m not even sure I even completed it! Certainly didn’t complete the PS2 or 3DS ones. They’re very much designed by committee and are purposefully overly lengthy to maintain that initial sales rate at launch (so fewer people are theoretically going to be selling/trading in until X amount of time. They’ve pretty much said this themselves, especially in Japan where they’re quite the big deal apparently). Definitely not something worth the effort to go through again.
This - I bought the original on sale back when it looked like the Definitive Edition was going to be Switch exclusive. While it was a decent experience and I'm mildly intrigued by the QOL updates (it definitely needs them), it also definitely dragged on and on and I don't think I'd invest another 60 hours into it for the sake of QOL updates. I am resentful though that I missed out on the Definitive Edition experience because they decided to release it on Switch first with no indication that it would be coming to other platforms at the time.
No, from memory it is locked to 30 on Pro with a checkerboarded upscale. The new version has a 60fps mode.
I don’t know to be honest. I’m guessing not since the 60fps is “featured” as an improvement for the S edition on PS4 Pro.
I'm not far in the original release would my save work on this version
You'd enjoy this then. It adds a 2D town (that is still in today if you opt to play 3D), that alludes to previous games via new collectibles.
I have only played the original and I loved the midi soundtrack (lol) ... Was humming the battle theme for weeks after completing. ... the biggest thing making me want to double dip is being able to see my party in the open world and the extra background story content for some characters. You're right it is a great game, thoroughly enjoyed, it was my first experience of Dragon Quest too and I found it an easy introduction. Couple of difficulty spikes but nowhere near the grind I thought it would be!
Playing it rn. Fantastic. Old school enough, yet modern enough at the same time. Still waiting to get Jade in the party. Recommend this version, as the midi soundtrack of the none S version in unbearable.
Isn't this a graphical downgrade from the vanilla version? Edit, answered my own question. It's a port of the Switch so a technical downgrade on the standard game
Heyyyyy buzzzzz! Am good ta. How's life treating you?
An absolute steal at this price, I can't say enough good things about this game. After downloading via Game Pass I ended up putting in over 250 hours to get all the achievements - something I thought I'd never do! Also, best girl on the cover ;)
Loving this on Game Pass. Excellent game.
Fantastic game folks. Old skool RPG (like the old final fantas games)

Yes actually (lol) Argos for some reason, I cannot buy ANYTHING. Just throws up an error about payment everytime. Noticed it is £17.99 so bought again and the promo credit worked again, so paid £28.98 for two. Happy days....
Why can't Switch version be this price 😄
What a game. I'd say at this price most people are better off buying it on here than getting an Xbox game pass sub to play it.
I 3D printed myself a phone mount for an Xbox One controller, which works well - get to use the controller I'm used to and can adjust the angle of the screen. But the Kishi is a lovely controller too - I actually have one but it's the iPhone version and I'm on Android now, so I'm going to have to sell it on eBay and get the other one!
Yeah, I have An S21 Ultra and a Kishi, Much better solution, also it has 5G so you can use it on the move.
Yeah, I've looked into that, didn't seem worth it, especially when my phone's screen is almost as big as the Switch's and streaming to that works fine.
Or you could do what I did, jailbreak your switch, install Android and stream it from the cloud! PS, don't bother, the switch WiFi is weak sause, streaming xcloud to it never worked well enough to enjoy on it.
I've been playing on and off for about a year, normal difficulty which is not super hard. Done about half the side quests and explored a lot of areas I think but not much else!
About 42-43 depending on character. Surprised you finished it that fast though I suppose it is possible if you stuck to the main questline and didn't explore or do the optional stuff. I am trying to do a fair bit (though by no means all) of the optional quests and the tickington quests and do tend to explore areas pretty fully, still surprised you finished so soon. One more thing, I am playing the draconian quest, harder difficulty option, as I found the default difficulty just way too easy for me, so that probably makes it take longer, as I have had to level up a bit more for some of the bosses, but worth it IMHO as I like the boss battles to feel like a real close tense fight and I just wasn't getting that at standard difficulty level...
What level are you on? I completed the main quest at ~60hours and that's at about level 40 per character
Hot deal!!! (party)
I'm playing through this, highly recommend it to anyone considering.
