In that case, definitely get the new S Definitive version. It is easy but a few bosses gave me a hard time and I had to grind a bit before defeating them, can't imagine how much more time I would have wasted playing the original game...

So the new version has less grinding? I ask because I have a busy life with no time to waste doing pointless grinding.

The new version is much easier - would base the above decisions on that fact alone, prefer an easy ride and a great game = new edition, prefer a challenge and more grindy JRPG? = this version. To each their own, but I did find the definitive edition far too easy from start to finish

"Gameboy version" who hurt you?

Slightly?? It's night and day the new version looks like a ps3 game in comparison. Not to mention the new versions so-called QOL improvements actually ruins a lot of the game like you can buy everything you need at your camp which you can now summon anywhere so you no longer need to explore to find the materials you need making it far too easy and a lot less fun as exploring and finding the ingredients for upgrading was part of the games charm. But to each his own, if you want the Gameboy version and the handholding included then I say go for the newer way more expensive version. If you prefer a more gritty JRPG then this is definitely the better version IMO. It's all about what you prefer as a gamer I suppose. It's ironic though as I hate games like Dark souls but love more difficult JRPGs as I love the grind but thats cause i'm old school lol.

Exactly, the game has several points which could be an "ending" but then it just continues. I didn't finish DQ11 either, I got to an ending, but then there was post game stuff to do for another ending, and the fact that your levels get reduced irked me to the point that I just stopped. The game is definitely all of the things you mentioned, but it does stink of length for length's sake - the fact that halfway through the story, you basically have to explore every area you've already explored again, that sort of thing. I didn't know about the design philosophy but it certainly makes sense...

Just when you think it’s almost over, it just carries on! I do like them for what they are. They’re unique. They feel good to play. Really well translated and localised. Genuinely humorous. Very whimsical. And quite an interesting story. They’re like a childhood fantasy adventure, the sort of thing you’d imagine at the park or in your back garden, bought to life. I remember playing the PS2 one (8 I think) and one on the DS. And of course this. And they’re all like it. They’re good. But neither the story or the gameplay has enough steam to hold your interest for the ridiculous length. They just get a bit stale towards the end. And the end isn’t even the end! Now that I’m thinking about it, I’m not even sure I even completed it! Certainly didn’t complete the PS2 or 3DS ones. They’re very much designed by committee and are purposefully overly lengthy to maintain that initial sales rate at launch (so fewer people are theoretically going to be selling/trading in until X amount of time. They’ve pretty much said this themselves, especially in Japan where they’re quite the big deal apparently). Definitely not something worth the effort to go through again.

This - I bought the original on sale back when it looked like the Definitive Edition was going to be Switch exclusive. While it was a decent experience and I'm mildly intrigued by the QOL updates (it definitely needs them), it also definitely dragged on and on and I don't think I'd invest another 60 hours into it for the sake of QOL updates. I am resentful though that I missed out on the Definitive Edition experience because they decided to release it on Switch first with no indication that it would be coming to other platforms at the time.

No, from memory it is locked to 30 on Pro with a checkerboarded upscale. The new version has a 60fps mode.

I don’t know to be honest. I’m guessing not since the 60fps is “featured” as an improvement for the S edition on PS4 Pro.

Not quite as good as the recent ShopTo deal (for £16.85), but that's now out of stock. This is the cheapest I can see in stock.

I'm not far in the original release would my save work on this version

You'd enjoy this then. It adds a 2D town (that is still in today if you opt to play 3D), that alludes to previous games via new collectibles.

I have only played the original and I loved the midi soundtrack (lol) ... Was humming the battle theme for weeks after completing. ... the biggest thing making me want to double dip is being able to see my party in the open world and the extra background story content for some characters. You're right it is a great game, thoroughly enjoyed, it was my first experience of Dragon Quest too and I found it an easy introduction. Couple of difficulty spikes but nowhere near the grind I thought it would be!

Playing it rn. Fantastic. Old school enough, yet modern enough at the same time. Still waiting to get Jade in the party. Recommend this version, as the midi soundtrack of the none S version in unbearable.

TBH No idea, while it did grate a bit in some instances, I managed to get about 250 hours on the clock without listening to other music!

Does the definitive version block spotify like the vanilla game does? That's what killed it for me, hearing the same ost for 100+ hrs was just horrible

Forging at campfires is enough, these are littered throughout the game, didn't bother me. I even got the platinum I concede on the music tho. It does sound really bad. Graphics look better tho

Typical after buying from Amazon at £21.99!!

Isn't this a graphical downgrade from the vanilla version? Edit, answered my own question. It's a port of the Switch so a technical downgrade on the standard game

Heyyyyy buzzzzz! Am good ta. How's life treating you?

An absolute steal at this price, I can't say enough good things about this game. After downloading via Game Pass I ended up putting in over 250 hours to get all the achievements - something I thought I'd never do! Also, best girl on the cover ;)

Loving this on Game Pass. Excellent game.

Fantastic game folks. Old skool RPG (like the old final fantas games)
