Without an external HDD no it's no better. Add a drive and you gain a single recording option and pause etc. Sky boxes loose all recording capability if you cancel the sub.

stphnstevey

Would this be any better than a sky+ hd box with a cancelled sky account?

Titanium

I concur. Had to buy a freeview box as a result!

jamgin

Regulators should have ensured equality of access, especially for those with no terrestrial broadcast. But they are so out of touch that they only regulate on equal access to SD broadcast...No wonder the likes of Netflix are wooing people away.

BucketMan

Sounds great, but many of us have no access to terrestrial broadcasts.

Still use my Panasonic freesat box with DVD built in. It annoys me youview is never freesat just freeview. Freeview is dead half the spectrum has been sold for 4g and 4k will probably never be on it just via the internet. Surely satelite is the way to go. All TV like BT is always freeview. Even nowtv's box is freeview. Surely they should have a freesat version to capture ex sky customers?

mikeydalby

I purchased a HUMAX HDR-1100S B Freesat box earlier this year so I could ditch sky+. I was only basically using the box as a PVR and it was costing me £27 a month. I haven't missed a lot on sky tbh and the Humax box is performing really well as a recorder (with series link). Installation was simple as I used the satellite feed from my previous sky box - just pulled the cables over.

redant

Mine doesn't. It depends which of the Energy Saving settings you select. The best approach is to use the Smart Standby option (assuming you've updated your box reasonably recently if its an old one). This will put it in a deep sleep overnight then into normal standby during the period you might want it on. It can still perform recordings - https://support.youview.com/youview-box/box-and-remote/using-smart-standby

pieinthesky

Why do youview boxes take an age to start up? It's ridiculous!

I would say the Humax DTR-T2100 500GB BT YouView HD TV Recorder / Freeview, from cex at £45 is a much better option. It's superb.

CrazyBob

If lack of WiFi is an issue then you could use a WiFi bridge. Quite a few of the repeaters will work in that mode.

malhal

is this worth upgrading from a T2? It's getting a bit flaky sometimes not booting without some HDMI cable fiddling.

friar_chris

As I understood it, you cannot move HD recording from this device for long term storage or to edit. You can only record and then play back on this recorder.

I hate talking on the phone too - just remember be pleasant and nice and they will look after you. Plus with a script you can save it too for your records should anything go wrong but I have never had an issue at all where they got the details wrong or payments and have to contact them.

77andyb

Great, thanks for the tip! Didn't know I could do it via online chat, so have been putting off calling them and trying to haggle on the phone.

gunmasterg9

Hi yeah I am an existing customer. If your not in the current contract best thing to do is log on to your virgin account. And then go to contact - a chat box will appear. When it came to renewal I said I am paying £49 or something like that and new customers are getting x/y/z for £39 - you can see that I have been a customer for a number of years can you give me the same deal as new customers - that’s how they matched it. In relation to the v6 box I would say that everyone has been upgraded to v6 box for free back in Jan / Feb - here is the article free v6 upgrade and they should be able to do it for you. Just be pleasant and say that as a new customer you can get x/y/z and they should be able to match it. It’s all about being pleasant and nice. My sister was in the same situation as you, she logged onto her account and I did all the typing and knocked her payments down from £70 odd pounds to £39 and increased her internet speed too even though she didn’t need it.

Emeye

Do you seriously keep your CRT TV?! What you need is an old plasma TV - I have had my main 1080p 50" Panasonic Plasma TV from new for 10 years and a 1080p 46" Panasonic TV that is 8 years old but I bought last year off a friend for £50. Even though you can see the difference between HD and SD channels, they do a really good job of upscaling even the really low quality channels. Loads on Ebay, just buy one locally that you can see running and check it doesn't have any screen burn - also they do use more energy than an LCD screen, and weigh a lot more - but worth it for the quality.

jamie015

Thank you. Don't have easy access to my satellite unfortunately. If I have to, I'll try to hire someone local.

I’m interested in getting a setup like this. Could you please provide a link to one of the front end boxes, as I can’t seem to find any? Thanks.

robo989

It doesn't give any more or less than any other tuner. You can get network tuners that accept DVB-S2 or DVB-T or both. You still need to pipe in your aerial cables for freeview or lnb from your satellite. I only found out about them a few months ago to be honest after suffering for years with a TBS6985 PCI-E 4 port tuner that then got shared over network from onboard server software. The network tuner, or SATIP tuner to give proper name etc just gives a raw output of muxes over your network. This can be processed further on another machine which will detect the tuners as being onboard in that box (program like tvheadend). OR For average person that doesn't want to do their head in for a week getting to grips with it all, one of those dodgy vue+ type boxes also carry out that function and can take the raw output and give a proper epg etc with minimal (2 hours on a sunday afternoon) type hassle.

Really hate my Humax box.... FVP‑5000T. Woeful interface - always manages to default to the wrong thing when anticipating what I might want to do next.. Also, the Humax support apps in the Android Play store basically don't work. Wish I'd got a secondhand BT box! I really despair at the lack of progress with PVRs - my 15 year old series 1 TiVo has a better remote control and user interface.

Kulaak

Never knew you could get a network tuner. Does this provide more HD channels than the standard 5 I can get with freeview?

This has been available on eBay for ages. Either they have loads of stock or lots of people are sending in returns.

sunter18

Bought one after much contemplation and initial thoughts are good, picture quality far superior to BT UHD box. Disappointed that it came with 3 programmes from Aug 2017 still on the memory and last update was March 2017 but after setting up and updating it seems to be working well and well worth the price. Understand they are graded but would expect the units would have been reset and updated before delivery. Will hopefully get more than the 12 months the warranty covers out of it but guess only time will tell. Heat from me.

soton26

I've had a Fox-HDR-T2 unit for 5+ years now and there is a package I use called DetectAds which strips the adverts. I believe it works by listening out for the 'time gaps' that occur between adverts and then removing this space when the programme has finished. I'm sure i'm over simplyfying it but all I can say is that it works well :)

professor.yaffle

I swapped my Virgin Tivo box for this when I was lucky to get an ex display for £90 almost 2 years ago. Haven't regretted it one bit, works better than the virgin box and is easier to use plus its saved me a fortune. Its not perfect but Humax are still supporting it, it had a major software update a few months ago.

supermann

Thanks. It's tempting to buy this thing for a friend but his TV has some sort of inbuilt PVR thing (Hisense TV) so not sure it's needed. Might try just attaching a hard drive to the USB Port and see how useful it is.

Joe90_guy

Big thanks OP. We bought one of the very first Humax Freesat Recorder boxes when the very first came out (Dec 2008??). Ten years (and several new remotes) later it's still going strong but I'm increasingly aware that sooner or later it's going to conk out on us and I've been looking for another one, at a decent price, for ages. We were in the pub when I read your post. I couldn't find the 1TB version close to me but Maplin in Basingstoke had one 500GB version in stock. So off we trot and yes, they do indeed have one last one on the shelf for £139.99. However the sign says £139.99 for the 1TB version which was incorrect, so they give my an extra 10% off. Bargain!! They said this was because it was an 'open box' item but it looks pristine to my eyes!

Under DSR I returned this unit to Humax. Compared with Freesat📡, Freeview has limited access to such as Curzon Home Cinema, Amazon Prime etc., channel availability (200 vs 70 approx.) and apps in general. Freeview does have more HD channels.

queer1

Humax Direct raised their refurb price for these and other units (as is their right) unannounced this week. In addition, BASKET10 discount, no longer works.

topazz

You've got the most recent update. Almost sent mine back when i bought one four months ago. Seemed so laggy and clunky compared to the previous Sky HD+ box plus the tv guide would occasionally freeze requiring a reboot. Lag is still there but otherwise the other bugs have disappeared and now it does all i want and then some. Very easy to network. Bought a cheap 2nd hand Humax H3 Espresso media player off ebay. IMO defo don't pay full price as the H3 doesn't have much functionality. But i now stream recordings from the main Humax box to the H3 located in another room. I have also transferred tv recordings from the Humax to my PC for offline viewing (Youtube it if interested). Overall i'm happy with the box and recommend it if you can live with the lag.

louiselouise

You've got me wondering if I have the update - there's been no change in the responsiveness or speed since I first got it about a year ago :( Edit: Just had a peek, my Software Build Date is 12 Jan 2018.

Started with normal SKY and updated to Q, the engineer changed the dish, so presume I have the wrong LNB. Thanks for your help

JaneEB

Two questions - did you start with ordinary Sky or Sky Q? If you started with Sky Q you would almost certainly have the "wrong" LNB. If you started with normal Sky then changed to Q, did they change the dish and LNB? If they did then you would have the "wrong" LNB, if they did not then you would have the "right" LNB. To be honest, if you can access the dish then changing the LNB should be a doddle, the LNB should be fitted at a 15% skew but apart from that everything else should be set up. If you cannot do it yourself it should not be too expensive to get it done by an independent engineer.

The_Hoff

It'll have likely 6 or 8 feeds, but no identifiers etc. Contact Sky saying their install borked your freesat box and you want it rectifying.

donkeydavid

Damn, didn’t know this, didn’t ask for one, but is there any way of identifying if the engineer fitted one? No freesat box for me then, glad I read the comments before purchasing!!

dave859

Makes sense, would save money on costly TV transmitters and satellites. It's not really feesable for the BBC just yet, not everyone has the internet and open reaches speed is so low for some it wouldn't work, maybe a 4g or 5g IPTV box is the way forward.

Tj14

Not quite. They give you Freeview HD in a much better user interface than a Now TV box. Your TV guide will go forwards and back 7 days each way for you to watch catch up on most channels and shows. In terms of apps, it has things like Now TV for movies on demand, and Netflix built in too. Also, if you happen to have BT, Plusnet, TalkTalk or KC broadband, you'll be able to pick up their own extra channels and services (as per your package, or extra charges you agree to. For example TalkTalk offer the Sky TV channels through YouView for a few pounds extra per month, and that option is generally a better experience than Now TV passes, should you opt to take them)

scunny

What do these do? Are they same as a NowTv box?

Tj14

You could always still use this with a couple of powerline adapters? This is how I made them work in other rooms usually with better broadband performance than I would get over WiFi too! Other than the Now TV Smart box which isn't really anywhere near as good you don't get any other options that would do the job other than subscription based offerings like a Sky Q Mini box, or a Virgin Tivo V6 Box

Tj14

UI for Now TV isn't as good. And they really try to push you into using their services. Last time I looked at the smart box it didn't even have a proper TV Guide for Freeview!

OperateOnMe

Second hand freeview box where you can pay to subscribe to BT sport, doe shave apps but needs a hard-wire internet connection. The nowTV smart box seems better value for the same second hand price

There are loads of network tuners, they basically connect to satellite dish or antenna and the network somewhere in the house but are accessible to the entire house. look up HDHomerun, Triax TSS-400, Megasat etc. Don't be too hung up on price, the solutions I'm offering are whole house multiroom solutions not really compatible.

stec77

I'm not sure what you mean by a network tuner? The only tuners that I know that aren't built in are either usb or PCI? Are there others that I'm not aware of? The wetek is interesting. I've seen them before but discounted them. Looking at them again I'm not sure if there just a single tuner? There still quite expensive especially compared to a second hand humax box that I've been happy with in terms of quality and reliability. The wetek doesn't have great reviews on Amazon so maybe I'll pass on that option. They maybe better value used on eBay especially as the Kodi function does seem to be as usable lately for add-ons. I think I'm drawn towards the fox freeview box and trying to modify it. Although I'm going to keep an eye for some good value tuners to maybe build into a htpc. I've been given lots of options through this thread and I've got plenty of reading ahead. I'll do some over the next few days as I'm just on my tablet at the moment. I prefer reading threads on my PC though. So hopefully I can use the info provided from the thread to come to a solution. Thanks for your replies!

stec77

I'll take a look at that thanks although that is more aimed at the freesat box version but I think there is some crossover. Maybe the freeview version first and then ported onto freesat. Either way I think I've got a lot of reading ahead. Also I think the fox boxes seem to be the most modifiable so maybe why they hold their value.

nastypasty

Lowonpower: "+1. Just bought a second hand "Humax HDR-FOX T2 500GB" from CEX for £55 with 2 year warranty. I have been running one of these for about 5 years, more recently with the custom firmware. Total recommend these, especially with the new firmware, best purchase I have made, However this box with only an 11% discount doesn't sound like the greatest of deals to me?." The 11% refers to the next best price. Actual saving from RRP is 25%. That is a good deal.

deleted1032520

Think I paid £59 each for my tuners. That was just one example there are dozens of ways such as using a network tuner such as a Satellite IP tuner like this or using an all in one solution such as a Wetek play which has twin satellite tuner built in and natively runs kodi. The wetek for example only needs a USB hdd in order to record, these are available around the £70 mark.

nickhale756

You are not alone-I could fry eggs on mine! Slows down and takes 8 seconds to work out series record. And this despite the fact that on this model the power supply is outside. I'm very disappointed compared to my previous Humax box.

Shame none of these newer Humaxes have custom firmware any more - allowing you to decrypt HD recordings for copying onto tablets, skip ads, control via web, etc.

I have this same box and bought it refurbished. Really nice piece of kit. Can record 2 channels no problem.

No idea about TV boxes but any recommendations for a freesat recorder that's fast with a nice user interface and well supported? Having two video outputs and ability to record one Chanel and watch another would also be a bonus. Id spend up to £250 if it was going to last. I also got a grade A box but mine was fine (it looked brand new and I'm not with BT) From previous experience with Humax boxes I would try a factory reset, this should remove any previous peoples settings

bigpappasmurf13

I bought 2 boxes from CEX recently. 1 was A grade and the other B grade. The B grade box works fine and I can use all the features but the A grade box won’t record. Does anyone know a way to solve this? ... At the time I couldn't see anything on the market that was better for my situation which was wanting as much free UK TV as possible in my house which has crappy TV signal but an existing Sky dish.

I have two of these. They're OK. I have got used to them and I have saved a fortune since not having Sky. The worst thing is the amount of time they take to come on. I feel that Humax are still investing in them as there have been a few updates in the year I have had them.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Humax's lack of development of Freesat recorders down to the gradual demise of the satellite TV market generally. I imagine that most Freesat boxes will have been bought to make use of redundant Sky dishes, but now with Sky moving over to streamed TV for the future the demand for Sat TV boxes will inevitably disappear.
