Just another company jumping on the band wagon. They should stick to what they know best!

Looks a decent offer on the face of it but there are terrible reviews on the App Store and it sounds like these have a tendency to switch off and require you to be there to reactivate them.. no support for local / ip storage either?

Working for me, it's in stock

Agree, that looks like y-cam not yi. In that case I personally would steer well clear, y-cam cannot be trusted to honour the cloud service that they advertised. Interesting that they are getting more trusted brands to rebadge their kit as y-cam got well and truly tainted at the end of last year. If you want more info on this search on Google for "y-cam cloud lifetime" and stuff around end the of Nov 17. Plenty of reviews on trustpilot about this lack of trust issue as well.

Hi yeah I am an existing customer. If your not in the current contract best thing to do is log on to your virgin account. And then go to contact - a chat box will appear. When it came to renewal I said I am paying £49 or something like that and new customers are getting x/y/z for £39 - you can see that I have been a customer for a number of years can you give me the same deal as new customers - that’s how they matched it. In relation to the v6 box I would say that everyone has been upgraded to v6 box for free back in Jan / Feb - here is the article free v6 upgrade and they should be able to do it for you. Just be pleasant and say that as a new customer you can get x/y/z and they should be able to match it. It’s all about being pleasant and nice. My sister was in the same situation as you, she logged onto her account and I did all the typing and knocked her payments down from £70 odd pounds to £39 and increased her internet speed too even though she didn’t need it.

Do you seriously keep your CRT TV?! What you need is an old plasma TV - I have had my main 1080p 50" Panasonic Plasma TV from new for 10 years and a 1080p 46" Panasonic TV that is 8 years old but I bought last year off a friend for £50. Even though you can see the difference between HD and SD channels, they do a really good job of upscaling even the really low quality channels. Loads on Ebay, just buy one locally that you can see running and check it doesn't have any screen burn - also they do use more energy than an LCD screen, and weigh a lot more - but worth it for the quality.

Thank you. Don't have easy access to my satellite unfortunately. If I have to, I'll try to hire someone local.

I agree! Mmm, any sort of apps for Record TV? I'm able to sideload and all of that sort of stuff, gives me an excuse to get a Fire TV stick!

Most Brazilian TV is pretty bad in my opinion. I downloaded some apps onto my Fire TV box to get Brazilian channels, as my wife and daughter are Brazilian. Turned out they weren't interested in having any Brazilian TV, even Globo which they watched all the time when they lived there. Now my wife says UK television is far superior, and loves the BBC and even Radio 4! My daughter however just watches endless episodes of the Big Bang Theory and Friends on E4 (annoyed)

I’m interested in getting a setup like this. Could you please provide a link to one of the front end boxes, as I can’t seem to find any? Thanks.

It doesn't give any more or less than any other tuner. You can get network tuners that accept DVB-S2 or DVB-T or both. You still need to pipe in your aerial cables for freeview or lnb from your satellite. I only found out about them a few months ago to be honest after suffering for years with a TBS6985 PCI-E 4 port tuner that then got shared over network from onboard server software. The network tuner, or SATIP tuner to give proper name etc just gives a raw output of muxes over your network. This can be processed further on another machine which will detect the tuners as being onboard in that box (program like tvheadend). OR For average person that doesn't want to do their head in for a week getting to grips with it all, one of those dodgy vue+ type boxes also carry out that function and can take the raw output and give a proper epg etc with minimal (2 hours on a sunday afternoon) type hassle.

If only you could install the UI from PlayStation 3s playtv

Really hate my Humax box.... FVP‑5000T. Woeful interface - always manages to default to the wrong thing when anticipating what I might want to do next.. Also, the Humax support apps in the Android Play store basically don't work. Wish I'd got a secondhand BT box! I really despair at the lack of progress with PVRs - my 15 year old series 1 TiVo has a better remote control and user interface.

Never knew you could get a network tuner. Does this provide more HD channels than the standard 5 I can get with freeview?

I've had a Fox-HDR-T2 unit for 5+ years now and there is a package I use called DetectAds which strips the adverts. I believe it works by listening out for the 'time gaps' that occur between adverts and then removing this space when the programme has finished. I'm sure i'm over simplyfying it but all I can say is that it works well :)

I swapped my Virgin Tivo box for this when I was lucky to get an ex display for £90 almost 2 years ago. Haven't regretted it one bit, works better than the virgin box and is easier to use plus its saved me a fortune. Its not perfect but Humax are still supporting it, it had a major software update a few months ago.

Thanks. It's tempting to buy this thing for a friend but his TV has some sort of inbuilt PVR thing (Hisense TV) so not sure it's needed. Might try just attaching a hard drive to the USB Port and see how useful it is.

It does actually yes, there's some extra packages you can install from the Web Interface, one's called AdStrip or something, but you can set this to run for all recordings. Personally I just have everything record 10 minutes before and after then strip all the crap out manually as it only takes a couple of minutes.

Doesn't happen to have the ability to strip the content of adverts? Not sure how a technology like that might work but must be possible.

Yeah...I was a bit sad that my local Mapins only had the 500GB version...but consoled myself that I can fit a 2TB HDD sometime down the line. Been using mine a couple of days and so far so good, registered for the 2 year warranty online no problem.

It's easy to upgrade these to an AV 2Tb drive... Seagate video drives or Western Digital drives are the best

Got one of these recently and it is very slick. The only caveat is that the DNS settings seem to be locked down and I can't get the box to connect to a VPN for US Netflix...

Big thanks OP. We bought one of the very first Humax Freesat Recorder boxes when the very first came out (Dec 2008??). Ten years (and several new remotes) later it's still going strong but I'm increasingly aware that sooner or later it's going to conk out on us and I've been looking for another one, at a decent price, for ages. We were in the pub when I read your post. I couldn't find the 1TB version close to me but Maplin in Basingstoke had one 500GB version in stock. So off we trot and yes, they do indeed have one last one on the shelf for £139.99. However the sign says £139.99 for the 1TB version which was incorrect, so they give my an extra 10% off. Bargain!! They said this was because it was an 'open box' item but it looks pristine to my eyes!

A Sky Q Mk 4 LNB is encrypted to only work with a Sky Q box, whereas the old Sky+ LNB would work with both Sky+ and Freesat. You would need one of these, IF you have a Sky dish/LNB, or a Sky Q box installed in your home.

No biggy but ... wrong picture in the post .. this is a Humax HB 1100s .. heat added though .. good price

Its the HDR 1100s that has a hard drive built in but the HB 1100s you need your own externally usb 2.0 hard drive

Started with normal SKY and updated to Q, the engineer changed the dish, so presume I have the wrong LNB. Thanks for your help

Two questions - did you start with ordinary Sky or Sky Q? If you started with Sky Q you would almost certainly have the "wrong" LNB. If you started with normal Sky then changed to Q, did they change the dish and LNB? If they did then you would have the "wrong" LNB, if they did not then you would have the "right" LNB. To be honest, if you can access the dish then changing the LNB should be a doddle, the LNB should be fitted at a 15% skew but apart from that everything else should be set up. If you cannot do it yourself it should not be too expensive to get it done by an independent engineer.

It'll have likely 6 or 8 feeds, but no identifiers etc. Contact Sky saying their install borked your freesat box and you want it rectifying.

Damn, didn’t know this, didn’t ask for one, but is there any way of identifying if the engineer fitted one? No freesat box for me then, glad I read the comments before purchasing!!

Makes sense, would save money on costly TV transmitters and satellites. It's not really feesable for the BBC just yet, not everyone has the internet and open reaches speed is so low for some it wouldn't work, maybe a 4g or 5g IPTV box is the way forward.

Should be possible to watch 4 HD like this if you can put up with no EPG and fiddling.

Because of the 4HD together with their catch-up app being withdrawn, after many a year with my Humax Freesat PVR, I've just bought instead the FREEVIEW PLAY RECORDER FVP-4000T 500GB - MOCHA (REFURBISHED).

Really happy with my purchase. I love the "this channel is available in HD, press OK to watch" which was a bug bare of mine on Virgin and Sky. Picture quality is much better than my old Sky HD+ box, I'm impressed.

Not quite. They give you Freeview HD in a much better user interface than a Now TV box. Your TV guide will go forwards and back 7 days each way for you to watch catch up on most channels and shows. In terms of apps, it has things like Now TV for movies on demand, and Netflix built in too. Also, if you happen to have BT, Plusnet, TalkTalk or KC broadband, you'll be able to pick up their own extra channels and services (as per your package, or extra charges you agree to. For example TalkTalk offer the Sky TV channels through YouView for a few pounds extra per month, and that option is generally a better experience than Now TV passes, should you opt to take them)

What do these do? Are they same as a NowTv box?

You could always still use this with a couple of powerline adapters? This is how I made them work in other rooms usually with better broadband performance than I would get over WiFi too! Other than the Now TV Smart box which isn't really anywhere near as good you don't get any other options that would do the job other than subscription based offerings like a Sky Q Mini box, or a Virgin Tivo V6 Box

UI for Now TV isn't as good. And they really try to push you into using their services. Last time I looked at the smart box it didn't even have a proper TV Guide for Freeview!

Second hand freeview box where you can pay to subscribe to BT sport, doe shave apps but needs a hard-wire internet connection. The nowTV smart box seems better value for the same second hand price

HUMAX have now updated the software on the FVP-4000T so that it now runs the same software as the FVP-5000T. So this is an even better deal now

I have the FVP-5000T. It's quite good but the software is quite buggy, for example:- Sometimes when I press pause and then unpause it subtitles are then displayed even though they are set to off and the only way to get rid of them them is to turn the subtitles on and then off again. It's quite an annoying 'feature'.

I've managed to get Standard Definition freeview recordings transferred via USB to play on my PC

There are several YouTube videos showing how it is done but not tried it myself. Looks a bit of a faff tbh.

Do any of these Humax units allow you to transfer HD recordings onto another storage device and watch them on say a computer? Or are they still locked to being played on the very same Humax unit?

These are OK, but the three-tuner ones are more versatile and well worth the extra.

... At the time I couldn't see anything on the market that was better for my situation which was wanting as much free UK TV as possible in my house which has crappy TV signal but an existing Sky dish.

I have two of these. They're OK. I have got used to them and I have saved a fortune since not having Sky. The worst thing is the amount of time they take to come on. I feel that Humax are still investing in them as there have been a few updates in the year I have had them.

your most likely right hence the focus on new freeview play boxes instead.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Humax's lack of development of Freesat recorders down to the gradual demise of the satellite TV market generally. I imagine that most Freesat boxes will have been bought to make use of redundant Sky dishes, but now with Sky moving over to streamed TV for the future the demand for Sat TV boxes will inevitably disappear.

True they are slow compared to a lot these days, and I would happily pay for a proper (fast) refresh of my HDR-1000S refurb. But it is still more than useable and doesn't leave me hating it with everyday use.

I have an HDR 1000S, but stopped using it when a common problem of the internal HDD not being recognised surfaced. I immediately went out and bought a Zgemma H2S (and added Wooshbuild with a Sky Q-lookalike skin) which I much prefer, though it is a bit technical to set up (Wooshbuild makes it a lot easier). Love that the Zgemma has an excellent Web interface and that you can indeed copy recorded HD programmes off it (a terrible, terrible restriction of all Freeview/Freesat recorders). Also relieved that it has no internal hard drive - just slap a decent capacity external USB stick/drive on it and away you go - if that goes wrong, just swap in a fresh stick/drive.

You can get the BT branded version of the Humax DTR-T2100 for amazing prices on eBay, news ones usually sell for under £100 and pre-owned ones for around £50-60. The common misconception is, even though it is branded BT, you don't need to be a BT Internet user. You just won't be able to access the BT TV services, but the recording function and on-demand players all work a dream. Here for example is a new on eBay for £75...
