Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex Complete Series Collection - Deluxe Edition (Zavvi Exclusive) Blu-ray £100.98 delivered

I've been waiting for this for years - my favourite anime series coming to Blu-ray with limited edition book and 3 movies. It's expensive, but bear in mind this is limited to 1000 … Read more

The size of the item, for those interested...

wiggywig

ordered this the other day. i actually expected the box to be a lot bigger than it looks, looks rather thin for the amount of discs and a book (maybe its A4 size or similar size to AllTheAnimes Ultimate Editions?). the price id say is rather good though considering you usually pay around £40 for a collectors edition of a series plus factoring in the films and collectors packaging its about on the money. seen as the Japanese releases go for around £250-300 per series its a bargain.

Googlyhead

I don't think it's particularly expensive, considering it is composed of two (long) series and 3 movies, and comparing the number of discs to the French version doesn't mean much to me without details like BR-25/BR-50 SL/DL for a start. What does grate is simply saying "we couldn't get the proper source material so we just did it all at 24fps". What? Really? Just hobble it right out the gate and try to convince people that it's still some kind of definitive collection? Even being a complete anime Luddite and expecting the actual animation to be more like 10fps; at the very least I'm going to wait for some kind of review/comparison, and certainly not worry about the "limited/collectors/get it first" stuff

fanpages

Considering the official (Manga UK) announcement was on 28 March, & Anime UK News had details on 22 March 2018, the limited edtion run (of 1,000 units) has not sold out quite as quickly as I would have expected. [ https://animeuknews.net/2018/03/manga-uk-reveals-ghost-in-the-shell-stand-alone-complex-coming-to-blu-ray/ ] [ https://animeuknews.net/2018/03/zavvi-lists-ghost-in-the-shell-stand-alone-complex-blu-ray-exclusive-deluxe-release/ ] [ https://twitter.com/MangaUK/status/978949965744656385 ] [ http://www.mangauk.com/ghost-in-the-shell-stand-alone-complex-arrives-on-limited-edition-blu-ray/ ] Plus... it's Zavvi. The Hut Group never seem to be able to fulfil any of my orders properly; either on their own sites or via eBay. Such a nuisance :( PS. Don't believe the £50.00 drop in price either. The suggested retail price was £99.99.

alibaba9999

Not sure something that is Zavvi exclusive is really a 33% saving on the RRP, given that they set it...

Haha no problem, I probably should have made it clearer in my initial post. But yeah, this is the full story (y)

OGNinjaDon

In a stange turn of events. I have now bought this, after voting cold. Just goes to show how little I know. FOR THE RECORD I WISH TO TAKE BACK MY VOTE KTHX.

OGNinjaDon

Ah I see, thank you. Would you recommend this over the normal 12/13 book collectors set?

SolaNova

These Black Editions are kind of like the 3in1's or omnibuses that Shonen Jump and Kadokawa make. So in one book you are getting two books so to speak. Also the black editions are slightly bigger then usual manga the edges of the pages are outlined in black. If you already have the original 1-12 set, then this is pointless. But if you haven't read Death Note and want to avoid reading it online through sites like Mangafox then its just another way to do so.

OGNinjaDon

Seems about £40 most places for the full 13 book collection with box. This is for 6 books and not even half price so seems expensive. Voted cold. Maybe somebody can point out if I've made a mistake, but doesn't seem a good deal?

imo at this price get it and listen to both or go original japanese track + subs. Not sure which dub they would have used tbh.

I caught this on the Syfy channel when it was aired not so long ago, which dub version did I most likely get? I wasn't so keen on the dub, would always much prefer subs.

Just have to pop in my two cents here - The Works are quite notorious for these 'how to draw Manga' books, and for younger audiences I'm sure they're fine. However, I must warn the parents of teens who are more heavily into the genre that these sets might not exactly be received with immense gratitude. By this I mean that the books are often drawn up by people whom have not yet ever released paid comic work let alone successfully published their art beyond a convention artist alley. Also, the materials included are rarely true to professional quality. There are plenty of incredible free tutorials to be found from professional artists online (not to mention thousands of amazing and far more thorough books) out there, and as a young artist, I'd have much preferred one very fine marker than a set of brush tip markers guised as 'specialist'. What I find most odd about most western how to draw manga publications and materials is their contradictory lessons. Before you can create imagery which most people would invest in you certainly need the basic grasp of anatomy, proportions etc,.. However, most manga artwork (especially the memorable ones) are known for their life and drama of pose. Very few books show you when and how it is okay to break the rules of physics or what details are not as necessary to establish the shot. Obviously this is all more advanced than a children's exercise, but trying to keep perfect anatomy whilst copying (for practice from successful examples) tends to be where most young manga artists fail. What I'm suggesting, is buying a serious pose reference guide or a pose-able hero/heroine model would be of far greater use to an aspiring young artist that's 'in the know'.

The ending was (is) set up for the option of a 2nd film. I cannot disagree with anything you've said there. Would have been so much better to have made 12 x 1 hour episodes for season 1 and then 12 x 1 hour episodes for season 2 (with S1 ending at that mega death). They could have remained more faithful to the books/anime and explored characters a lot better. For me it's the relationship between L and Light that makes Death Note and that just didn't exist in this film.

nihei is brilliant, probably one of the two artists i'd happily keep their books on the shelf (blade of the immortal by hiroaki samura is the other). his stuff is a little hard to wrap your head around but art is incredible - i'll probably pay the top tier for the additional artbooks and unlocks even though i have both blame volumes (knights of sidonia - the other top tier unlock - is far a more accessable read while having the same quirk for bio-mechanical beasties with very human chararistics)

Didn't like this too much myself. Never understood the fuss over it. It was trying to be clever. But without giving a big spoiler, I can't even explain how daft the premise is, and how insulting the conclusion is to the intelligence of the viewer. Might possibly have worked better as short instead of a feature. I remember the DVD version having a good interview with the director though. Wonder if it's on Blu Ray.
