Also bear in mind (in reference to the original post), protein will do absolutely nothing on it's own. You really don't need it unless you're regularly working out and have a calorie/meal plan, goals etc. Even then it's debatable (e.g. if you already have a very high protein diet). If however you have a diet set out and know how much protein you're getting from meals, plus how much you want to get overall, then it is useful.Apologies if that's patronising, it's just your OP sounds a bit like 'protein will kickstart my new years resolution', when in fact it will do nothing without all the other stuff!

What? You have shattered all my hopes I thought you have a protein shake and end up shredded with superhuman muscles. I'm joking of course.
What you said is spot on. I use protein shakes after a work out as I usually head to work afterwards. If I'm not working I'll eat a proper meal.

You can go a few days without protein. Nobody is saying you can't.What …You can go a few days without protein. Nobody is saying you can't.What we're saying is you can't go for months eating at a calorie deficit, working out heavily AND maintaining a protein deficit without losing skeletal muscle to make up for the essential AA's the human body can't synthesise. This is simple biology. I don't need to reference any studies or papers, any 1st year bio textbook explains energy metabolism.

Sorry I know you mean well but that's outdated broscience. If you try to lose fat you will lose some muscle (assuming you don't use illegal "help"), that is simple biology, and guzzling extra proteinz in powder form is not going to help a natural athlete maintain that muscle. In fact the extra calories are likely to hinder fat loss more than sparing muscle.

The fitness industry has been pushing excess protein requirements to simply sell more of their products.
