Actually, the state of the art in record playback technology hasn't really …Actually, the state of the art in record playback technology hasn't really moved on since the 1980s. It was already a mature technology by that point, and in some respects it's gone backwards, particularly when it comes the availability and VFM of quality components. Some examples:- Technics released the SP-10 turntable in 1970. It's not really been bettered since (except the MkII version of the 80s).- Before that, the Garrard 301 (released in 1953 and in production for decades) is still much sought after and forms the basis of many high-end record replay systems today. - The Linn LP12 was released in 1973 and is still in production today. Again, recognised (somewhat more contentiously) as one of the best ever Turntable designs.- EMT broadcast turntables have been out of production since 1982, but again, are probably as good as anything at any price.- The SME V tonearm (still in production and recognised as a reference standard) was released in 1984.- The Rega RB300 tonearm (still in production and recognised as a reference for VFM) was released in 1983, and still features on very many mid-price turntables today, in much the same form.- Cartridge technology hasn't really advanced. Models are still available today (Denon, Goldring, Dynavector) which have remained unchanged for decades. The problem is that they cost much more than they used to because production volumes have been very low for a long time. Those are just a few examples. There are many more like it, and when well setup, those components will provide a very compelling alternative to the very best digital replay systems. The common factor is that, used or new, none are cheap. The thing with record playback is that it's mechanical, it's analogue, and it requires extreme precision. It therefore depends heavily on the quality of engineering and the quality of build/materials and construction, or else you'll just end up with a lot of distortion. It's not digital, and you can't shortcut performance with some moulded plastic and $0.01 integrated chips. What this Akai (yeah right) is is Junk. It will just about make a noise. It will damage your (not inexpensive) records in doing so. It will not track properly (just look at the reviews on Amazon). It will sound absolutely dismal, and it will convince most who listen that records are a vastly inferior playback medium, when actually they can be astonishingly good.

Garrard SP25 was the deck of choice for us poor people in the late '60s / early '70s.

I presume you are talking about disposable barbecues in the first part of your reply. But surely it depends on the make of disposable barbecue? I hadn't used one in years until my bargain store fiasco of last year, and I remember having really good results decades ago, with some, on camping trips. I can imagine there is a huge range of quality out there. So to dismiss them all as useless seems silly.

As to size of the Halfords barbecue, well surely it depends on how many you need to feed, and what sort of meal you intend to cook? There does seem to be a UK obsession, probably led form US grilling culture, that a "barbecue" should involve vast amounts of grilled meat, of irrelevant quality, being charred and served. For lots of us though, small quantities of perfectly cooked high quality grilled meats are only a small part of the meals we want to have in the big outdoors. And so a small grill, that can be taken anywhere, might be just what we want.

will be decent enough for occasional use or records you don't care if they get ruined, wouldn't buy this for regular use better off spending a bit on a decent separates system with a proper turntable
FANTASTIC -at ruining every piece of vinyl you put on it.
Turntables with decent arms and cartridges are expensive for very good engineering reasons! -they don't damage you record the first time they are played.

showing 39.99 now whilst I might be prepared to take a punt at 30 notes, the extra tenner as being a deal-breaker

I agree with Pink Thing

What makes me sad is that those who are new to vinyl and are buying into the revival might believe that based on hardware like this, that this is the best quality of sound that the format can provide - which we all know, is not the case.

That being said, this IS cheap, and as the OP says, provided buyers are aware of the shortcomings, I cant see a cheaper way of playing (and slowly destroying) your records.
'You get what you pay for' has never been more apt. Cheap build, awful sound quality and the non-adjustable tracking weight will destroy your records...and an album costs an awful lot of money at the moment. Novelty value to play your battered old vinyl on only.

If you're serious about vinyl then get an entry level turntable, a cheap amp and speakers. If you're not, then you won't be prepared to spend £20+ on an album anyway :-)

Careful, what the Chinese exporters will happily call “leather” is actually more accurately termed PU Leather. OK here goes. Can of Lynx, packet of prophylactics, packet of Halls Mentholyptus, an A to Z, a book or an e-book reader, a magazine of your choice, a tablet (electronic), a box of paracetamol or ibuprofen, a Mars Bar, a 1/4 bottle of spirits (of your choice) just in case, a mobile, a packet of tissues (handy for the nose of wiping up), a leftover Greggs sausage roll, some stationery such as pens, rubbers, pencils, a set square and a reporter's notebook, a tube of readymixed Polyfilla, a multi-tool, a screwdriver with changeable bits, a packet of plasters, a packet of chewing gum, several old bus tickets, an MP3 player, a case for your glasses, your glasses or shades, some wipes for cleaning the lens of your glasses, a small digital camera, a voice recorder/dictaphone sort of thing, a packet of AA batteries, a signed photo of you and the new Dr Who, a DVD that you meant to give back to your colleague who has now left, a Spanish/English phrasebook, some woman's phone number written on a napkin whom you can't remember meeting, 4 pictures of you and a mate taken in a photo booth when you were drunk one night, both looking just a wee bit too bromantic, the pocket sized Bear Gryllis survival guide, a few lumps of charcoal from the barbecue, various beer mats taken from pubs for your collection, a spare key to your mother's house in case you ever need to return, something by Jeremy Clarkson, a list of DIY jobs you need to do and a compass. All very manly. There's nothing impresses a woman more than a man who can whip out a tool and finish off a quick job without any fuss, or a gentle man who knows when to get the hankies out.

I'm genuinely interested as record decks are the one but if hifi I don't know as much about as I would like.

The Stanton 500al and mark 2 are good for dj use and can take some hammer although records ive owned 20+ years and played constantly are all still excellent condition

A lot of vinyl wear can be caused by wrong setting on tone arm / weight etc. poor operator handling etc

A lot if audiophiles still use the technics 1200/1200 as quality so good although likely to us the Concorde style carts and styluses
Looks perfect for those hipster picnics in London Fields! Is this battery powered/rechargable?
