Picked one up today. It's a diddy little thing but should be fine for pruning. A word of warning for people using adaptors for their slide pack batteries. It can be a bit difficult to get the battery to release due to the way the slide packs secure against the side clips on the adaptor. In my case this relates to the Makita Badaptor. The trick is to release the slide pack and butt it up against the handle as far as it will go. This will give just enough wiggle room to release the adaptor from the tool along with your slide pack. This is usually not an issue on other Ryobi tools as there is nothing obstructing the slide packs from releasing fully from the tool.

Can this cut through bones, asking for a friend?

Bought this for £90 earlier and been using it this week. I have a 1.3a battery and gives about 30 mins runtime on that. I’ve found it to be great at what it does, so heat from me at this price. (y)

Is the 30cm too small? It's normally £178 in power tool world rather than the £199 in fastfix, but the 40cm are normally £229 :/ probably not worth the extra but if it's not big enough not worth getting either? :/

Jonesey4658

Makita have said they are continuing to invest in lxt.....we shall see. With any luck the the lxt range might come down in price. I’d certainly keep buying the 18v stuff as it’s more than good enough (y) And as for using lxt on new 40v range, they are not compatible.

TonySquared

I think I actually saw a converter, so you can use lxt with a 40v battery. I have swapped to CXT, find them so much easier to use and plenty of power for my needs.

Paatch

The spacing between handles on a conventional saw provides much greater leverage in controlling the saw. You'll find a lot of info on this on the google machine. The conventional Makita saws aren't that much more expensive.

bubblesmoney

Looks v similar to the ones from ALDI Lidl etc surf similar handle placement and trigger. So can't understand why this is less safe than the other ones. Excuse my ignorance and enlighten me please. Please see photos attached

Gadgetdeals

Using the chainsaw one handed is the biggest risk, so in reality don't do it unless highly trained. This is the industry guidance leaflet which describes best practice in straight-forward terms: Top-handled chainsaws have two handles. To maintain proper control of the saw ensure, wherever possible, that you grip both handles.Keep the saw well clear of yourself and your climbing equipment at all times.Ensure you obtain the best available cutting position to minimise the risk of being struck by the saw (including kickback), or by severed pieces of wood.Incorrect, one-handed use significantly increases the risk of injury from the saw if it kicks back, skates or bounces on contact with a branch, or drops through at the end of a cut.Never ‘hold and cut’ a section.Do not attempt to catch a falling section.One-handed use should be restricted to circumstances where one hand is required to maintain a stable working position and the saw is used at extended reach with the other hand, e.g. while cutting at the extremities of limbs.Poor work positioning in the tree is not an acceptable reason for one-handed use.

Nth

Basically a top handle chainsaw is for one handed operation up a tree hence the danger. They are not for cutting logs at ground level.

Gadgetdeals

It's not unsafe, its a matter of being careful, crossing a road can be unsafe, there are risks in using all tools especially saws, read the instructions and research the risks then adapt to suit you for utmost safety, people have different perceptions of risk and different levels of tolerance and skill. Yes a chainsaw can kill and should be shown the utter respect, but I can think of just as dangerous things to use in the saw world, even angle grinders can kill.

Key benefits for me (over the 2 stroke chainsaw I have been using) are: 1) No battle to start a recalcitrant engine 2) Much reduced noise 3) No smoke / fumes. 4) Pick up and put down ability and a lot would argue it has the same power as a petrol!! Not sure where you’ll find one cheaper atm... Mines in the post :D

I think it will be powerful enough for domestic use more power than any electric and no cord. Ive used a dedicated brush cutter with smaller motor and was fine... Looking at the picture cant figure out which is the pruning tool.

HooRah

Yes most people speak well of the one+ range. It was a little 1.5a battery in the hedge cutter which got 5 minutes out of a full charge so presume it was just a bit severe use. Definitely would not touch this deal

BogBeast

I guess you have been a bit unlucky then. I have a garage full of ONE+ tools and started in the garden shed with a pole saw and pole hedge cutter. In 10 or so years not one of my tools has packed up. A couple of the first early Lithium batteries did not last as long as I'd hoped, but the later ones have been fine and even the cheapo Amazon reproductions are OK but generally dont like the high current draw tools like the 1/2" impact gun. Both the the pole saws have cut an trimmed for two seasons with no issues. I might even consider getting a battery mower when the petrol one gives up. They only tool I would keep as 2 stroke is the chainsaw but only as I use it a lot for brush clearing. I just think these cheap Chinese made tools are a false economy, take up space in the shed and its always a gamble when you try and start them IMHO. But hey - knock yourself out. It would be a good way to learn how engine works when you are locked down without anything else to do....

Del_boy__

Good if you can return when failty with the warranty. Stihl are the best in my opinion but expensive had over 20years start every time. Voted hot.

HooRah

My ryobi hedge cutter killed one battery and I'm scared to use another in it. Strimmer smelt like it was going to blow up with a 4a in it

Completely different tool, that little power pruner does not come close to what the B&D lopper does.

kabs

Stihl have the gta 26 out, light, one handed use, about 1 and a half hr to charge and not much more than this. As with all battery tools you would really want 2. Quite a few demo vids on youtube.

KingBurger

Nope, it can make it less powerful as well as it limits the load of the motor. Plenty of YouTube videos and tests out there if you need proof.

Besford

B&D pretty rubbish these days (trading on a famous name) and an 18v/2Ah battery powered one of these will be neither powerful nor last very long on a charge.

GST11

Ah affects how long it will last, voltage will affect the power of it. Will still definitely be less useful than mains though

- Chainsaw trousers - Safety boots with proper steel caps (Ex spent afternoon in casualty getting toe sewn almost back on after thinking she could just pick up a chainsaw and quickly saw something up...) - Eye protection Learn how to tension the chain and keep it sharp (these are good https://www.amazon.co.uk/Stihl-56057504303-easyfile-4-0mm/dp/B00CIRQW0K/ - best way I found short of getting the chains sharpened by a pro) A healthy regard for possibly the most mechanically violent device you can legally buy on the high street I would suggest that you need to be a very hands on practical person to manage something like this. If you are not, I would steer clear..... Some of my friends are not, so I go round and do whatever cutting they need doing because its easier for them to buy me a beer down the pub with all their limbs attached,

Decent ppe is gunna cost a lot more than £100. Trousers a lone for a decent pair are about £150 and you don't want to skimp on the trousers, can prob get away with some cheaper boots but still looking at around £60/70 for chainsaw boots, can skip chainsaw gloves, I find they restrict movement too much and find it safer with just work gloves. Ear defenders and mesh face screen also advisable, prob wouldn't use Googlese tend to steam up

Cantwin

I agree about the weight. I looked@ these last year but decided against as @ 6kg+ on the end of the pole will weigh heavy after only a short while, but could become a good keep fit item with benefits to garden

You can remove chainsaw as I have one. Heavy on pole and only 750w but still help out from trees and chop logs.

How tight do I tighten the screw tensioner on this machine. If anyone is buying this you need to buy chainsaw oil before you can use it

neilcaldwell

Probably because the cheaper saw will be used by very inexperience people, therefore the risk of an accident may be higher than normal. In any case whether you're spending £40 or £400 on a chain saw, why would you skimp on PPE?

EchoCR

Pre- lubricating. Awesome!

lancashirelad

I have this chainsaw and it is a decent budget saw, ihave been using electric chainsaws for many years, without any dramas.I also use ordinary vegetable oil for them. I recommend reading the safety instructions. Always wear goggles as the chains often spit splinters towards your face. Don't cut with the tip of the blade it will ruin the gear wheel, try to cut branches at 90 degrees where possible. I also agree don't be too ambitious until you know your saw. Big trees or even medium size ones can be tricky to fell in the right direction it can be expensive if it falls on a garage or conservatory, if your not confident get a insured professional in.

Bossworld

Used mine a couple of months back and having taken the front and side branches off a connifer, it was time to try and take the trunk down. If it fell to the front it would take down my conservatory. To the left, the neighbour's fence. To the rear left, the other neighbour's shed. Went through it (I've got the £100 Oregon one from Screwfix which is fantastic) but it was still stuck on itself. Wrapped the garden hose around the tree (not my first rodeo), gave it a few pulls then watched in horror as it fell directly backwards over the other neighbour's wall :D The rear branches I couldn't reach clearly outweighed the rest. Luckily it's unoccupied at the moment and they're planning for an extension so it had all been cleared, but it took me all morning to hop over the wall with the chainsaw, cut it all up smaller and throw it back over my own wall. Still, could have been a lot worse!

The description says "Comes with oregon bar and chain with low kickback". But I find that it's always best to use the saw correctly, and try not to put it in akward positions/cutting angles especially keeping the nose of the bar and running chain away from a head on cut.

Wowhats

I have a 20 year old Husqvarna, I've probably spent well over £400 in new chains, guide bars, chainsaw parts and a rebuild at one stage, so for a £100 you could abuse this machine and make use of the 3 year warranty, the abundance of cheap saws these days makes you wonder if it's ever worth buying a top brand at £600+ (shock)

jsd74

Has it got anti lock kickback mechanism? My last one kept locking up on the bones.......

Fridgedoctor

This seems like a cracking deal, I can't imagine you would be able to get a chainsaw with this power and bar length and 3 year warranty for this price. For me most offers you see on chainsaws are for small pruning saws, for larger jobs such as cutting larger logs up for fire wood this is ideal.
