You presume correct :). Tvheadend will always try to re-use tuners where possible. Thankfully the SPI is fast enough for sending a complete mux, so no hardware PID filtering is needed! If you really wanted you could hook up an additional USB tuner to access more channels. How many you can record/stream will depend on your storage medium, SD cards aren't known to be fast. Just remember if you do connect anything via USB it's sharing that one bus between everything, including the Ethernet! So recording to an external network drive and live streaming at the same time may cause issues, but that (again) depends on how many streams (and the bitrate) are going over USB. I haven't received mine yet so I can't test/push it to the limits until it arrives. :(

Hi Grazie, I found what was on each mux for Bilsdale on this page : https://ukfree.tv/transmitters/tv/Bilsdale As you can see it details all the muxes available and what channels they provide. The PSB3 is the one with the channels I've mentioned on. In Kodi (running on my Nvidia Shield) when you go to the live TV part, I just went to the guide, went to the three HD channels and pressed record for all of them and they just started recording. I then selected the fourth channel, chose "watch" and it played with no problems. I presume the reason that the Pi can handle it (I'm using a Pi 3B) is because it is only recording the streams and the nvidia is actually doing the decoding. If I chose a channel that it on a different mux while it is recording, I just get a message saying no available adapter. Hope this makes sense, but if you have anymore questions just ask and I'll try to answer them.

grazie

Can you explain how this done or is it self evident in the software that you're using? I understand how these channels share a mux, but I'm struggling to see how a Pi can cope with all the processing that must be required. How did you find out what channels are on a mux in your area?

petermartin99

Hi Floppydesk. Yes, it is a DVB-T/T2 tuner. I have recorded from BBC One HD, BBC Two HD, ITV HD and they create a .ts file from them. I am using a 128GB Micro SD so am recording directly onto there. In TVHeadend you specify where the recordings go so you could use an external USB drive or network drive. Another thing is that the one tuner can record everything from one mux. To explain, I am using the Bilsdale transmitter and one mux has the following channels : Film 4 + 1 BBC One HD BBC Two HD ITV HD Channel 4 HD Channel 5 HD CBBC HD So if I record from BBC One HD I can watch or record any of the other channels on the same mux. This morning I have recorded from BBC One HD, BBC Two HD and ITV HD simultaneously while watching Channel 5 HD with no problems. Edited to add - I'm using Kodi as the frontend. You can view the EPG, recordings, set recording, timeshit (pause Live TV, fast forward/rewind) and it seems to work great.

I help out with the development of Tvheadend, mainly doing all odd and ends. Just waiting on my HAT to arrive so I can tinker with it. :) If any one would like to help with the project, please feel free to pop on over to tvheadend.org and give us a hand! Everyone is welcome, not just developers! 8)

Made my own. £3.99 for a cheap witches hat, pair of old suede trousers, some glue and brown boot polish. If I wanted it to talk I would have put a mobile phone inside on speaker and played through another phone. Okay so the mouth wouldn’t move but far cheaper than this expensive tat!

MisterGeezer

No problem. Was going to get one for the daughter until I realised how bad the mouth movement was. Clearly been made on the cheap with no devotion to the source material. For forty quid, it should do more.
