Do you have to use WD Hdd's in this or can you use other brands (like seagate/toshiba etc)?
PS. Yes I know WD Red HDD'S are better than most others.

They weren't damaged but they were reduced. And there was 10 of them when I've taken a picture. They were on all of the shelf's from top to bottom. Sealed new, guess they've gone quick. Should have taken a better picture when been there.33170010-bSOl4.jpg
I'll buy just to strip out the RED drives if that's what they are.

This unit can to my surprise do 4 1080p audio and video transcodes despite its processor because of this. You'd be forgiven for thinking all nas could do this but they can't. More powerful and expensive nas can't do as many streams. I can only assume this went cold due to a lack of understanding as to this devices value.

Exactly i know enough out plex and so on and the fact this can transcode 4 at a time at 1080p is pretty impressive for the form factor / cost. I was looking at a Ts150 however the cost of an xeon upgrade drags the price up pretty high granted I would be able to run some vms off it also

I could do with something online if anyone knows of a decent rental. after a managed account with a few streams.
Hmm. On the fence with this one. A bit pricey for what you get tbh.only 2 bays too. Still rather a have a HP microserver at half the price which is upgradable in terms of cpu, gpu, ram and more HDD slots etc..

I have had one of the 4tb for about 2years, brilliant bit of kit, multiple logins been set up for all my 5 at home so they can backup from each of their mobiles. Thanks for sharing this!

Purchased one quite recently and haven't set it up yet. I was considering the idea of using it's cloud functionality across the WAN but having read two of those articles I think I'll just keep it LAN side only!

As you have said further down, this is the problem we face from a number of vendors who unfortunately are, let's be honest, playing at it with the "Internet of Things" and don't really understand security. Another good example of many car manufacturers who still don't get it. Mitsubishi springs to mind

I didn't buy this My Cloud for its cloud functionality as such...and it appears that that was just as well

Do a simple check now to see if your backup really qualifies as a backup. …Do a simple check now to see if your backup really qualifies as a backup. So..Is the data backed up on your Mac and on this drive only? If you answer yes, then this is not a backup, meaning the following can easily happen, but we hope they don't. Fire, theft, failure. A backup requires data to be on at least two different mediums and not contained on the same site. So if you introduce a cloud backup too then you will have a relatively safe backup solution. There's ways to expand on this, however I always encounter people who think backing up means just dumping their data on an external HDD. When you say to them ok so your data is just on this backup drive, what happens if it breaks or gets stolen, how will you recover your data? This usually sets the cogs in motion.

You are correct, my mac backs up to iCloud and i store my movies on the external hard drive so not to use and slow my main machine down. The data is just movies that i use to stream over the house to other apple devices with the family. No back up is truly secure and if your data is that important to you, i would print it off in binary :-)

When you connect external storage to the Shield you have the option to make it 'adopted storage' meaning it becomes part of the android internal storage. But then the device gets encrypted so you can't use it with anything else.

Once done, it appears as another drive in My Computer, just like your internal hard drives or any USB drives you connect. (The WD icon you see at the bottom there is the media server running on the drive, the HD icon on the bottom right is the actual drive.)
Then you can browse it and copy files to/from it just like all the others.

I spent a month trying various things before contacting them, spent ages on the forum. I could still use it but it's noisy if I leave it on all the time or I have to plan ahead 40mins.

How are you trying to access the dash? Through the software or just through a web browser? Have you tried a hard reset using the button on the back? That can reset the firmware.

The web interface is frustrating to use and unresponsive and they disappear from the network intermittently when using the time machine option for Mac. The WD software on Windows works though which is its only saving grace for backing up stuff

I get lightning fast transfer over my gigabit ethernet connection. It's not bad over wi-fi either. Perhaps your router is the bottleneck? And I find the web interface pretty clean, although I don't have to use it often because I've just mapped the drive as above and use it that way.

Yeah, me - read my first post above. Over the last 10 years I've had a 1tb MyBook World, 2tb MyBook World II, 3tb MyBook Live and now a 4tb MyCloud (which I bought recertified 2 years ago) and they've all been brilliant for my purposes, which is mainly sharing files between computers, backing up some important files and serving media to my TV.

I don't see the problem with recertified - either it doesn't work and you send it back and get a refund or replacement or it works and you've saved some money. The same could be said for any drive you buy, except perhaps for the saving money part. If you have files that are that important to you, you shouldn't be trusting them to just one drive anyway - any drive could fail, and no amount of warranty or customer service is going to guarantee you'll get your data back, so the only difference I see recertified making is the saving money part.

As NAS drives, they're perfectly fine. I think the biggest problem I've had with them is that they tend to slow down when they get nearly full, which is mainly the media server struggling to index all your files, so my solution has always been to reduce the number of shared files or upgrade to the next generation of drive. If you buy one that costs £200+, that would have higher specs, so perhaps it wouldn't slow down when it was full, and they should be able to run more apps, such as Sonarr and/or a torrent client, which is something that is possible on the WD drives but not officially supported and they might not be fast enough to run everything. But for what you do get, they're great value for money.

As for the Raspberry Pi - I've tried creating a NAS drive with one and it's just not as fast as the WD drives. I don't know the MyCloud's specs off the top of my head, they're probably not as fast as the Pi, but the problem with using a Pi for a NAS drive is that the ethernet port isn't gigabit, so that's a huge bottleneck. You might be able to live with that though, depending on what you need it for. My setup is the MyCloud stores my files and serves my media, then I've got a Pi in the living room that's mostly used for RetroPie but also has Kodi to play files from the NAS drive that my TV can't (like x265) and run the media organising apps (like Sonarr) to take the load off the NAS drive.
Thanks for the input guys, is there a better option? Seems like there are WD recertified stuff which has bad reviews.. or those chunky NAS drives with costs £200+. Is there a good alternative that I'm not aware of? I do own a raspberry pi.
Western Digital 4TB My Cloud Personal Cloud Storage NAS Drive - £129.99 @ Maplin

Spotted this NAS drive deal while in Maplins today, might be useful to someone.
I would go maybe for 4 TB instead of GB

Obviously, the bigger the better. I still have another, separate portable hard drive with a backup of mine.

I don't have any experience of the new version, but I can't fault our one which I presume is the older version. It just works really well.
wow - many thanks lump. That's what I'm after then.
Do you recommend a particular hard drive size or is the 4gb sufficient?
I was looking at Maplins for this model but it is discontinued and not available generally.
Western Digital do a new model - are they as good as the old one?

cheers

Yes it can. Once on the drive, you can access them via a variety of different ways. The WD Cloud app means you can access them away from home too.

I have all my film and music collection on the drive, and I access it through my Samsung Smart TV built in DLNA streaming. You can have it as your itunes server as well.

Hi, I was wondering if this is good for streaming TV shows to my android device? I'm not really too bothered for Plex or such.

And from experience (yes, I've torn some of the single drive units apart for the disk) these are generally WD Red drives too.
