Tried these on a plasterboard wall with a skim on top - the fixing just squashed and broke as it couldn’t penetrate the wall. So what are people fixing to bare plasterboard in a house? I can’t see an application for these, at least for myself.

jon19783

Though they were rubbish.

Murgatr0yd

This is poor advice. They’re not designed for use with plasterboard and will have very little fixing strength. They’re also known as ‘Rawl plugs’.

Bought these today, seem to be good quality and the organiser box they come in would probably cost you a fiver or so.

How good are these screws?

My dad did this. Into a pile of sawdust. Yep. Never been the same again (excited)

You say that, but I find the idea strangely compelling :/

Agreed.

chelseablue

The one they showed me in-store today had grey plastic side and front clasps, they said it was the wrong picture on the website, the metal one has a different product number to the one that they sell, false advertising really, thinking you going to get the metal clasp version when the plastic one turns up instead.

burblepop

Oh. They look metal on the picture. It's the more expensive one on the picture here - and the one shown on their site. The cheaper one has all plastic fittings and yellow side clasps.

chelseablue

These ones are the plastic clasp ones, they do not come with the metal clasp, Screwfix don't sell the metal clasp ones, I asked when I was there earlier.

burblepop

The ones on offer recently were the similar looking but all plastic versions. These ones have metal clasp and the lid has a gasket to (I'm guessing) make them water proof.

You'll need a usb keyboard. There's another way to force sound over HDMI in the settings menu, but you'll also need a keyboard to change it IIRC.

Forgefix. They are brilliant, especially for the price. They're passivated, so won't rust, countersunk, and they go in so smoothly I never soap them. Hardly bother with a pilot either, unless very near the end. I get them from Amazon, and look at the reviews. I'd say they are on a par with turbo gold, but less than half the price. Love them.

mattu

Decking screws or stainless steel would be a better choice.

what do you recommend, and where can I find it? TIA

That's us all screwed now, they are back to £19.99, so maybe it's time to expire the deal.

dusan

By the time they rust, the decking will be replaced twice. If decking is not coverd by a roof or a thick layer of paint, it will not last longer than 10-15years max. Those screws will live longer than that unless damaged.

FunkiestMonkey

Please can I recommend the ones with a slim head? I bought them from Toolstation. They come with the correct bit to drive them in. Reason is, I have built 4 decent sized decks and I always used the Philips wide head screws before and they always were visible. With the thin head screws they sink into the wood and become almost invisible. Can still reach if need to undo and the pattern of the hole to accept the bit is such that you get a better fit so less slipping.

veedubjai

Organic coatings are nearly always a barrier coating. That is to say they provide corrosion protection by forming a barrier between the substrate and the atmosphere, and if this is broken protection ceases. Still rusts since it's carbon steel if the protection is gone.

patrickrsx

These are the organic coated screws for decking.

I think Screwfix sell the box for about £7. There's a larger box too at a tenner, and the compartments are interchangeable. That said, I've found the compartments on these particular ones are slightly taller than in the Screwfix ones, so they need taking down a bit for a good fit in the other boxes. But I've got four this size and four large ones and just swap them about as required.

tek-monkey

I've been buying turbogolds when they are cheap, so have good stocks of the more obscure sizes. I don't need to use them often, I'm a data monkey not a chippy, but lately I'm doing a lot of hardware jobs in my 'spare' time and these are really getting my attention. At present I only have 60/80/100mm but I find I always reach for these over the TGs when I need that length, I'm going to get a few of these just for the variety. Didn't realise on my phone that these are removable compartments too, the box must be worth a fiver easy.

deleted801301

They're brilliant. I don't know why I didn't change to these years ago. I thought I'd try a pack and realised I was going for them all the time, rather than pozi's, so that was it. Luckily my pozi stocks were running down anyway so it wasn't a great sacrifice.

tek-monkey

You know what, I never realised how much difference the different head makes. It really does though, a lot less slipping even at obscure angles

TomF

Yes these are very good, they also don't fall off your screw driver as well.

Ordered...to go with my new DeWalt impact driver which arrived today! (y)

KendallC

I think I understand what you mean but the 'sleeve' doesn't appear to move at all. The only movement is the bit itself moving due to the internal spring. I feel sure I must just be being an idiot and missing something obvious but if you get the chance to post again once yours arrives it would be much appreciated!

heavygoodz

Not received mine yet - but you usually have to pull the sleeve of the holder forward (or back) then pull the bit out

KendallC

Can any one that has this set answer what is probably a stupid question for me. Once you put the magnetic screw holder over the screwdriver bit, do you simply use brute force to take it off again when needed or is there a trick to it? Mine arrived today and I just tried the holder together with the bit packaged next to it to get an idea of how it worked and now it doesn't want to come off again!

JaK29

Ordered, thanks a lot and heat added.
