A tablet PC that’s cheaper than others in its series, the Surface Pro 6 has been given a more substantial battery and a sleek new topcoat. Aside from that, it is very similar to the 2017 Surface Pro with the same dimensions and vivid 12.3in screen. Just an update for anyone considering buying this. Runs all web pages without issues. Plex with HD movies also good. Youtube, netflix etc all work well. Game streams from my PC,ps4 and Xbox. works great and the bigger screen helps! Runs ps2 emulstor without issues, now I can play rtype final anywhere in the world. Downsides. Its quick to set up but updates will take quite a while, just be patient. Windows os gives you flexibility of a system that not locked, if you want a perfect tablet experience then go with an iPad, but means locked is. Never licked android myself, specially on a tablet.

crazygoldfish

Thanks for posting, that appears to be gone & is a laptop. I’m more after a tablet experience. Trying to use a laptop on a plane is a pain in the chuff.

Brydo666

I'd stretch to £100 more and get one of these. Inspiron 7386 i5-8265U 8GB RAM 256GB SSD

CHUNGHO1

Medio-core. Is this tablet more efficient compared to the i5 and i7 version?

crazygoldfish

Really ? A lot of reviews comparing to the go showed it to be better. Not as good as i5 but good if you want a windows tablet. What would you recommend for the same price? Genuine question as I want a 12 inch tablet for long hauls. I do a lot of flights, would love an iPad Pro 12.9 but price is nuts and I don’t like a locked OS. I will also use it for game streaming about the house from pc / PS4.

jimlad21

I would get the surface 7 with lesser spec over this. i7 has a fan and you will never use that power. Also the surface 6 has flakey WiFi. They switched to intel in the 7 and also improved the Graphics chip.

Codelas

I would say if you have never used a surface before let not this be your first one. After using them at work for many years now i would not spend 1k on one let alone 600 good luck

Codelas

Very true my friend

zeb.mattey

Nice, I wonder if this is true of the new SP7. Again it's still a use case, unless you need a fast SSd why spend more. I have a 256gb one, but I've used a 128gb as well and I noticed no difference whatsoever.

eldaras

Just reading some reviews rather than throwing my outdated "experience". The Surface Pro 3 i5 has a fan too (or maybe more than one), but it looks like from the Surface Pro 4 onwards the i5 is passively cooled and MS actually did a really good job on the design changes to keep it cool. For me, the surface pro has been an essential part of my university and academic workflow. The form factor, display, keyboard, and pen set it apart from all others. I first got the SP3, and I've also got the 5 and 6. You'll not regret getting one, I'm sure of that. You won't be having on it though.

Johnnyboy11

You could always add a micro sd card to expand storage, fits discreetly behind the stand, here: https://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/samsung-evo-plus-512-gb-microsdxc-uhs-i-u3-speeds-up-to-100-mbs-90-mbs-with-adapter-for-8199-dispatched-from-and-sold-by-amazon-uk-3308299

plewis00

It doubt it'll fall hugely, 10th gen doesn't bring a lot to the table over 8th gen, you've still got the same quad-core setup.

soulbladeuk

with the Surface pro 7 due imminently i would expect this to fall rapidly over the next month. i paid similar money last black friday for the same spec. I would wait for black friday and grab yourself the latest model

SmashingK

Used to work with a senior dev who used surface pro 4 at the time so these are plenty capable. Don't expect to game much on it though. Also, you might want more than 256 gig of space as that's likely to fill up quick.

I am not a massive JL fan but thought I'd respond to some posts: Microsoft only offer 1 year warranty and you would have to send it in The X version has the pluses of bigger and better screen and battery life, but at a cost of not knowing what apps will work If a 13 year old has filled up 256gb I'd question what they are doing, if it's games then they have the wrong machine, if it's not that's an awful lot of selfies or downloaded material

buddn07

Yeah, but it's an Arm based processor, so won't support all apps. I'll wait for the second iteration before I take the leap with Windows X.

deleted341252

The 256 GB hard drive fills so fast, would never buy a Surface Pro again as they are full before you know it and its only a 13 year old using it. Nothing more than a tablet in reality.

Entirely - it's just having used both the Go and the Pro, I'm happy for work to issue them to me I wouldn't spend my own money on one - especially if it was my only machine and I had a job where I wrote a lot.

GhostCaspar

if you don't cross your legs it works quite well, depends on the user I guess

Alansmithee

Sort of - it's a terrible experience - my take on the surface pro - it's a good device if you always know you are going to have a flat table to work on. I have on from work and although it's fine as a free device, I personally would not get it in place of a laptop.

complicatedsam

The keyboard is very light weight and thin so it won't feel the same as a normal laptop, what I do is I push the stand behind the screen a little further down so it rests better on my lap

mroller

can you put this on your lap like a normal laptop?

Just found a brand new surface pro 5 at local sell trade store its i7 1tb ssd and upgraded graphics compared to i5 models... BUT it's still 5th gen 2017 release... it is £1049 seems incredible as most other i7 1tb ssd even 2017 model near 1.7k minimum... is it worth waiting for newer models and see what happens or just grab it this cheap? I7 1tb ssd seems great but is 5th gen getting old now? I'm really stuck haha any advice would be awesome.

nothingbutadam

devices? both? I only have one. wow you guys really dont want to hear about potential issues with these.. 'must be an apple fan boy.. must be me'.. how dare someone suggest SOME of these devices develop faults that cant be fixed outside of warranty.. 'MY device is fine so everyone else on the internet must be wrong or lying' lol

quertbarbie62

Theres a common factor with your surface devices. They are both MS surface.... and yours. Others seemed to be fine with it, so maybe theres a problem on how you use it. Or you are just someone who is unlucky enough to get the bad ones.

KC30

only issue with my surface 2017 256gb i5 (no fan) is the lighbleed ! its horrific! apart from that is super silent and recomment for silence alone!

nothingbutadam

i dont have a mac, never had a mac in my life so I have no idea what you are on about the point im trying to raise is that there are a lot of issues with ms surface products, if you have one without issues thats great, but if i was going to get another id get a long warranty as 12m down the line when your warranty with MS expires they dont usually have the answers to issues people are experiencing and the general vibe is 'you may as well scrap it and buy another, or pay us loads of money for a discounted refurb model we will sell you'

What it processor/ram config did you get? Would you mind sharing our CE paid as I am considering as an alternative to pro5 or 6. Thanks.

Have they still not fixed the light bleed...? I’ve had a few like this as well and got fed up, went back to a refurb Surface Pro 3 from ITZOO which had the key specs I needed (8GB RAM and 256GB SSD) - have no compelling reason to upgrade it yet, still runs like a champ despite being 4 years old. This is so annoying. I actually snagged an HP Elite X2 1012 for next to nothing - it’s one of the best Surface competitors but more importantly it’ll charge using USB-C so a power bank can top it off. It’s 2019 and still using that finicky Surface Connect charger...

skinrush

It's a compromised product for non compromised money in my opinion, even at this price.... And yes, there are compromises with everything. If you desperately want a laptop/tablet hybrid running Windows, then this is an ok option. For this price, you can get a similar performing laptop, AND a really good tablet, I'd suggest.

Nicolas

Pros and cons... Pros: Screen on this miles ahead of ZenBook even brighter with approx 500 nits. This being stock Microsoft it doesn’t have the skins of other brands. Example last years microsofts 8.0.3 was corrupt, when I wiped out the machine and re-installed windows I was stuck with missing key ASUS drivers etc. The touch screen is good. Cons. Not good to use on your lap The flimsy key board the comes with it and the whole form of this is not like a proper laptop where u hold the bases that supports the screen etc as per a normal laptop. Hope this helps someone as many helped me on here The 128 is not all available, some of it can’t remember how much is used for windows. So essentially factor in half of that possibly.

In all likelihood the next Surface won’t be until at least spring next year. For one, it has always gone that way; October release then spring release a year and a half later, then every new Surface Pro has had a generation leap in processor. also, the previous generation tend to keep their price quite well and an 8th gen i5 is still pretty fast.

LuxoR

I just ordered this. Thanks OP. I have my British Airways American Express which gives me £100 back on a £400 spend and today TopCashback is giving 15% cashback on all purchases. I went for the Platinum Surface 6 Pro with the matching Platinum keyboard cover. Total was £804. With the £100 American Express credit and the £120 Topcashback brings the cost down to £584. The 15% cashback is today only as far as I can see. Hope this helps anyone that was on the fence and has Topcashback and/or AMEX. Pretty good deal for sure. (y) :D

Question more around AMEX offers in general. Anyone had the Platinum Cashback Everyday card and then switched to the Platinum Cashback card (with the £25) fee? Wondering if there is a difference between the offers that come through for the fee-paying card, as I rarely have any, yet spend a lot on there!

It Yes, this does make sense. It just seems like the fact that the form factor has not changed since the SP4, that they will need a genuine update sooner rather than later. Perhaps they will afford to wait until next May. I personally hope so. It may mean a move to better CPUs, and real USB-C support.

This is a really good device, and the price is still good, but we're now getting to the point where you shouldn't buy unless you absolutely have to. It won't be long before Microsoft have put out the next SP, and that's almost certain to have USB-C, and an improved type cover that will attach to the back of the tablet when folded around. As ever, it'll be subjected to the usual deals a few weeks after launch.

Both the 128gb & 256gb i5 with type cover is out of stock had it been this would have been a great deal :(

£900 for just the device without the type cover seems a bit steep given the very recent deals, albeit we don't have time machines to go back. I also understand there will be 15% off Currys ebay tomorrow and given they sell this for the same price, this should be cheaper then.

solid price for solid device :)

I assume you are asking about a 13” HP Envy x360? They seem to be all AMD Ryzen CPU’s. I don’t know much how they compare but they look nice too. I think it depends on what’s important to you. Laptop experience with tablet features (360, and pen support) or tablet experience with laptop features. The Envy x360 has more ports which might be important and more stable lap use. The surface is smaller, slimmer. No compromise on cpu performance. Fanless in the case of the i5 variant. The HP might be upgradable as it can be dismantled like a regular laptop, where as the surface is what it is and everything is soldered down on the board. You can only add storage in the form of a microsd on the surface device Hope this helps

How does this compare to the HP Envy x360 ?

Looking on Currys/PCworld for the same spec i5 8250u, 8GB RAM, 256GB storage and display upto 13.3" the prices of laptops start from £699 to £899. None of these have a detachable keyboard except the Surface. If you need a stylus pen to do hand editing / drawing then you'll be looking at Surface or Lenovo Yoga which is still in the £899 range. I'd also bear in mind how many years warranty you get as well when choosing the laptop. Surface is light, quiet, small and thin. Ports on the Surface can be limiting (Single USB, 3.5mm, mini display port, microSD, and Surface connector for the charger or the dock/port replicator (which adds more display and USB ports as well as charging) Goto a computer store and have a play on each to see which has the keyboard feel you like.
