Several cheap and cheerful SIM-Only deals (giving mins, txts and data) @ various suppliers

*** After 18 months of keeping this updated I retired this deal in mid Jul 2013. (See more about that a few of posts down on the homepage for this deal). Since then AhmadCentral has taken on (with my blessing btw) the second role of "Doctor SIM" and you can find all the latest information in the deal "Best Sim Only Deals! (MEGATHREAD)" ***

This is a regularly updated summary of the best SIM-Only deals currently available in the UK (a sub-set of the 200+ tariffs available) offering at least 100 mins, 100 texts and 100MB data (and typically a LOT more). It includes special versions for iPhones & Blackberry and some of the deals are often so cheap that they'd be great as an alternative to PAYG or for non-smartphones (i.e. ignore the data).

The best deals are shown for each of the main UK mobile operators. For each operator the NETWORK used is shown in brackets. There may be lots of operators in the UK but there are really only four networks - Vodafone, O2, Three and EE (Orange/T-Mobile) and all of the operators use one or other of these networks. IT'S ESSENTIAL TO ONLY PICK DEALS ON NETWORKS WHICH PROVIDE GOOD COVERAGE WHERE YOU NEED IT. If you are unsure of coverage for a particular network then ask someone who uses them or get a PAYG SIM and try it.

Every deal is shown in the same format. First is the name of the tariff (i.e. how it's identified by the operator); next is the current monthly cost (after any offers) and contract length (i.e. your commitment); then the number of minutes, texts & data included in this tariff; then the amount of cashback (if any) available from TCB or Quidco; last is the effective monthly cost, calculated over the contract term after all discounts/cashback. Footnotes are included for each operator to help clarify any big pros and cons.

Cashback is not the same as "redemption" cash claims. Cashback is not guaranteed, but you are very likely to get it (95%+?) and there is no effort required after placing the order (i.e. no "claims" over the contract term). Mishaps do sometimes occur with cashback but most problems occur with the initial "tracking" in the first 3 days after placing your order and when you are still in the cancellation window, which gives you a way out. However, if you really cannot afford the deal without the cashback then don't do it!

Thank you for all your comments and hot votes, and thank you to everyone who's contributed to the discussion (all 160+ pages of it!). The deal has had more than 850k hits and is currently the hottest deal on HUKD. More importantly though it seems to have helped a large number of people save money and I hope it continues to do so.

LATEST NEWS (Updated Monday 8th July 2013)
======================================
- Welcome to the last ever update! After 18mos on this deal it's time for a rest! I need to get back to my life!
- Thank you for all your comments and heat, and particular thanks to everyone else who helped to answer the questions posted here. If it weren't for the "community" I would have given up a long time ago!
- The deal is set to expire next Monday. If you want to keep track of it then bookmark it or subscribe to it now. Also, I may not be doing more updates but if I see anything hot I'll post them as standalone deals. If you want to be alerted then you can always "follow" me.
- Finally, when I started this thread the hottest deal on HUKD was the notorious fleshlight! We overtook that about 15mos back at about 6000 degrees, so it suits my binary/mathematical nature to bow out at about double that! 14000+ degrees should be quite a nice new target for someone to aim for! :-)

FINAL THOUGHTS
- If you are already with a network and want an additional SIM these are often available at a discount. Phone them and ask!
- For anyone reaching the end of a contract it is definitely worth trying to haggle. Good value retention deals are sometimes available and will avoid any cashback risks and porting hassles. Even if you are quite shy, a simple, friendly and polite phone call saying you are thinking of leaving and asking for more for less might generate a good Upgrade offer there and then. However, if you are getting nowhere just ask for a "PAC" and wait a couple of days. The company's Retentions Team might phone you back a day or two later and offer you something better. Once you have a PAC you are under no obligation to use it, and you have about 4 weeks to do so (to transfer your number to another operator and terminate your contract with the present one. Until (and unless) you use the PAC things will simply continue with your current network so you haven't burnt any bridges. (Good link in msg 434)
- Finally, if you cannot negotiate any good deal to stay with your operator, are paying a lot and can't find your perfect deal just yet (maybe waiting for release of a new phone?) then consider porting your number away to a 3rd-party PAYG or 30day contract (e.g. Virgin). That could save you money in the short term AND give you the best starting point to jump on any new offers when they appear.

I did a SIMO with Voda 2 years back and the Quidco was honoured without probs. I think they are probably pretty straight with their cashback. FWIW that cashback deal is a Quidco exclusive for the next few days only.....

Can't beat giffgaff as a low user or with goodybag IMO ...nice work though..have heat!! :o)

o2 usually have good deals but i was always midcontract so couldnt take up. now that i can choose an offer, they have nothing!

three also have £81.82 cashback for SIM 600:

SIM 600 12 month.
SIM Only
600 minutes
3000 texts
1GB data
12 months

From £12 a month.

I think GiffGaff is pretty awesome, but it's for a certain user profile. If you don't need the unlimited aspects then it's actually 3x as expensive as the cheapest deal! Not dissing GiffGaff, just pointing out that they don't actually have a competitive offering for a "light" user......

Also worth a mention for the £50 love2shop voucher you get with vodafone on £15.50+/12m sim only. love2shop is actually a useful voucher, check their website, you should find somewhere to use. Offer expires 10th Jan, use the code JAN50 when checking out. Cashback is increased to £110 via quidco also. Lastly "unlimited" internet for first 3 months of contract. Not too shabby for £2.20/m over the 12m contract if the cashback pays, which it should. Was going to post separately but this seems a good place to share. heat added.

If these are good or not doesn't matter. It deserves to gets heat for the effort alone. Only thing I could possibly recommend would be to add a link to the relevant deals otherwise brilliant post. However looking at the deals for the average user these are a nice roundup to finding the best overall deal at the minute.

Can you find me something on the O2 website coz all I can find is Simplicity starting at £16 (when u add data)? I can't believe that there isn't something better than that?

krisek

upgrade varies from very good to ridiculous with three. it depends if they can offer you a good deal. the one above is new contract only. as always, quidco is not guarenteed but if its a deal you are going to choose anyway then you can potentially effectively pay about £5.18 pm.

It looks like pay as you go with O2 seems to be the way they want you to go when you compare like for like.

tmobile net is 500MB, then slowed down for the record.

also, for the record, quidco is a one off payment, if you want to renew the contract the only way is to get a new sim (but then you can port your number directly to the same network.)
Edited by: "nebno6" 5th Jan 2012

Just what I was after, thanks very much.

Have just signed up for 1 month rolling t-mobile an hour ago with cashback just until I find a good simo deal. Will check these out when month is up.

i have been checking o2 frequently and that is more or less the going rate + potential £25 quidco.

Thanks for the post mate, it's appreciated that you shared your research with us. Have some heat :).

Heat for effort too from me! I'm on giffgaff & very happy.

u should add talk talk in it too

Great work OP heat added.

I'm looking for something - PAYG (preferred) or Monthly (not 24 month hopefully) where I can get unlimited landline calls or at least 600+ minutes... I hardly use xnet/mobile minutes and seems I can't find anything cheaper just for making landline calls.

Anyone know anything?

I didn't know T-Mobile are doing cashback. I just renewed my contract to the £10 p/m deal, but at £7.50 p/m instead. Happy though still!

thanks for your effort some great info,,been looking for something for daughters phone

heat added for ure homework alone plus sum gd deals as well

Banned

Do NOT under ANY circumstances go with TalkMobile!
I won't bore you with details but they are the worst that a mobile company can be....and MORE!

Well done!

There's a £5 goodybag instead or just go PAYG - cheaper than any other PAYG operator because of cheaper texts and cross-network calls (and still free calls and texts to other gg customers).

The T-mob deal in the list has a booster with it. One of the booster options is unltd calls to landlines!

Am all simmed up at the moment but this is a very handy topic and one I hope either remains to be updated or the OP remakes every so often. As its not so easy to find this info.

Voted very hot and for the effort deserves to hit very hot.

Thanks for doing this.

Tesco Mobile - IPhone Sim only 3 month contract - 500 mins, 1GB Data - £12.50 per month.

Note that although this is called the IPhone Sim you can use it in other phones (the sim comes in a standard size too). I confirmed this on two separate occassions with Tesco online advisors and have the transcript saved,

Can I tether the Three tariff to a tablet (HP Touchpad) and use it as long as I do not go over 1GB a month.

Thanks Op for your effort. You should do this every month. I'm sure everyone would appreciate. Heated.

Three's 900 contract can be manipulated to give better value than most of these deals. £15/month over 2 yrs = £320, less £80 topcashback, less £50 when you sell the lame bundled phone. £170, or £7/month.

Heat added for effort.

Not much going for orange - 150 mins not enough.

When I moved to 3 from giffgaff on the £10 deal I didn't find out for a month that they charge the first second of a connected call as a "minute" even if phone switched off so u get voicemail. Anyone know if this time cheat is used by orange or others?
Edited by: "nospamjl" 6th Jan 2012

on 3G network: for 15£ on pay as you go you get 300mins, 3000txts and UNLIMITED internet (about 80gb dowload). they have the best mibile broadband speeds in UK

good work mate on putting the list together - it will help many :-)

Great effort, voted hot.

Many people don't want to sign a two year contract. Also after 12 months you'd get a retention deal, so that may work out cheaper.

fascinating heat for your effort

Stirling effort.

Incidentally, whatever happened to Reestit Mutton?

Tesco mobile also do a 3month contract, it is £12.50 a month for 500 mins, 5000 texts and 1GB net
