Oil has a shelf life - maybe nearing its 'sell by' date?
this is not LL-04 , so no good for BMW's (well new ones), did a lot of research for my car oil last time this came up and decided to buy a cheaper oil and change twice as often - also decided to pick one with the maximum amount of SAPS to save engine wear, these low SAPS oils are only good for the DPF and I would rather have to fix that than the engine - saying that this one does have quite high SAPS for a low oil!

Dekard is of course comparing apples and oranges. Tyre manufacturers make very different tyres for different characteristics, longevity, soft ride, water draining and advertise these factors widely. Not so with oils where they are tied by the international standards and can only make unprovable claims about magic ingredients. Major manufacturers use different tyres on their new cars according to the price they can secure at the time from the makers.
Mercedes to my certain knowledge use different oils when servicing again according to the price they can buy it at, not only at main dealers but at the Mercedes direct owned garage in Milton Keynes. Is he seriously saying they would use oils which would damage engines, which they themselves would then have to replace? I think he needs to check who paid for the learned articles he has read. 52 years driving and 40 years of MB ownership tell me he is wrong. All oils from reputable makers, not just the ones who spend the most on advertising, to the same specification are effectively the same. It's as daft as the man who always uses Shell or BP through a belief they are somehow better, the ad mans natural victim.

The only measure of oil quality is the specifications on the tin. Are you …The only measure of oil quality is the specifications on the tin. Are you really saying that other reputable makers are fraudulently labelling their products on a massive scale and you have enough expertise and laboratory facilities to analyse this? That if I go on a car manufacturers site and they say "or oils which meet this specification" they are lying? Are you also saying that the only cause of oil degrading is inferior constituents? What about the 3 most common causes, heat, shear and contamination?

I've read a number of articles over the years on oil quality - same specs, same grades. When testing lesser brands against a number of top brands, engine protection qualities varied dramatically across the board. The anti-sludging efficency of Mobil 1 and Castrol Edge, far out-perfomed cheap same spec brands. Now I'm not saying there are no cheaper brands that aren't good, but it's a gamble if you don't know which ones to go for, and which ones not to.

It's the same with tyres. Would you say that all tyres with the same specification, speed rating and size perform the same? I actually fitted a set of budget performance tyres to go on a performance car several months ago, the car was back in for a new set of Michelin Pilots the following week because they were literally too scary to drive on. You're welcome to do what you want with your own car, but I'm telling you first hand how many people have made the same mistake with engine oil and paid the full price later on - and the same with tyres.

I don't mean to come across as rude, but that is totally not true. I've …I don't mean to come across as rude, but that is totally not true. I've worked in the trade for years, and engine oil quality is vital for both longevity, and performance. I've personally seen cars use cheaper branded engine oil that is 'supposedly' fully synthetic and exact same viscosity, but sludges up and damages the engine within service schedules. The expense for repairs always far outweighs the cost of buying a top quality oil. In fact, even some car manafacturers have had to upgrade their specified oils to meet the demands of their engines. There is plenty of tests that prove the importance of oil quality, and evidence is plentiful on the net. Personally, I only recommend Mobil 1 or Castrol Edge (where possible).

This is Fully synthetic Longlife. At least twice a year. Asda reduce the price of their Castrol oil. 4L to pounds 10 and sometimes 12.

Oil used to be sold in 5L. cans as most car engines need more than 4L. So the oil Companies reduced the quantity to 4L hoping you will buy 2.

I missed the Euro car sale at less than tenner. 19 is not cheap nor a deal, as oli does not go off it is worth stocking up when its on at a bargain.
