£79.89 for a 4 pack including delivery if you are far away from a store like me. I have a service coming up and supply my own oil rather than use the garages bulk oil so bought 4 and will keep 2 for top ups and the next service. https://www.costco.co.uk/Tyres-Automotive/Car-Maintenance/Castrol-EDGE-5W-30-Long-Life-Engine-Oil-4-Litres-4-Pack-16-Litres/p/888222

The only difference is that many different brands of oil meet the BMW Long life specifications, but do not have the BMW recommendation/ approval. No doubt some sort of business deal with BMW and the oil companies involved, that is to their financial advantage.

rickj

Spot on .It will light up what ever comes 1st ,either time or mileage .You will also have service and inspection checks on your BMW plus brake fluid ,in fact a whole host of checks which get flagged up ,brake pads as well .

The_Ramrod

Dont worry, you can tell, because people who own Porsche 911's don't call them 911 Porsche's (cheeky) . I thought my experience with seeing an increase in oil change schedules with my current car which happens to be an M car when the discussion was about the "M" version of the BMW LL oil was reasonable. I also own a Land Rover defender, it gets changed every 5k or 1 year and not with LL04 oil maybe that would be a better car to compare too (lol)

Stainy

The service schedule on my 911 Porsche is irrelevant. I could have written 'car' but then you'd never have known about the Porsche (which actually, I don't have) (y)

.MUFC.

If you're doing lots of long journeys then LL is fine but if you're doing lots of short journeys I'd definitely recommend changing oil more frequently. I change mine every 6K.

This is what Costco has for sale: https://www.olieonline.co.uk/castrol-edge-5w-30-ll-longlife?___SID=U

manbearpig

This is the correct one, and is the ‘M’ version, not the ‘LL’ version. The ‘LL’ version doesn’t comply with Bmw ll04.

Smadmad

That's what I use olieonline.co.uk/castrol-edge-5w30-m-ll04 The title clearly states Castol M LL-04

manbearpig

LL version of this oil doesn’t comply with LL04, only M does. Why is this so hard to understand?

Lower_for_Longer

Thanks, I will look at some forums. It's a 15 y/0 German sports car that was inherited. It feels like it's built to last and I have a sentimental interest in doing so. Unfortunately my finances are not great atm so I'm tempted just to SORN it (properly) until I can actually afford to drive and maintain it properly.

It's irritating that Castrol do so many 4L bottles, only vehicles I've ever owned that I can fill with 4L are motorcycles, most cars taken between 4.2 and 5. The 5L Castrol bottles always cost more per L!

It’s a tub of oil

Joe90_guy

The problem you have with all 'true synthetics' (base oils which have been built up from smaller molecules) is that they typically cost 4 - 5 times more that oils derived directly from crude oil. The Ravenol oil looks expensive but I doubt their margins are that high. Much of what I'd call 'the real world' has long since abandoned PAO/Esters because of their high cost. Today, when you see the word 'synthetic' on a can of oil, it usually means it's blended from severely hydro cracked vacuum gas oil, which in turn is derived from crude oil. These so-called Group III base oils are pretty good & way better than bog standard mineral oil BUT it's markedly NOT as good as PAO in terms of very high temperature oxidation resistance. They are also problematic in terms of oil volatility because there's no such thing as a heavy Group III. They make nice 0W20/5W20/5W30 oils (which have high volatility) but you can't make a 15W40/20W40/20W50 Group III oil (which would have low volatility). You CAN make a 5W40/5W50 oil but these will have even worse volatility than the 5W30. I suspect you could live with a Group III 5W40 in the Audi if you drove it like I drive my Celerio (I think it went over 2,200 rpm once by accident!). But no one mods an Audi to drive at 55 mph max. Sooner or later, the temptation to 'see what it can do' will be irresistible & that's when you'll start emptying your crankcase of the slippery stuff.

TomTheCat

Wow, I didn’t realize LPG could be so much better until now, although my engine really does look much cleaner than usual... Ravenol 5W40 Racing Ultra seems as an excellent choice, a bit pricey here where I’m from, but I guess I’ll have to source harder... :) Is there also any good more budget-friendly alternative you can recommend?

Joe90_guy

LPG service is MASSIVELY easier on your oil than when you're burning petrol. You can more or less guarantee that with every industry-standard engine test you run, where gasoline is the fuel, the engine will go from pristine condition to various degrees of dirty (sometimes horrendously dirty!). On those rare occasions when I've run tests with LPG, the engine looks almost new at the end of the test & the oil's hardly been touched. If everyone used LPG, people like me would never have had jobs to do!

TomTheCat

Wow, thanks a lot for the detailed answer, mate, very helpful! Ravenol products looks promising, I’ll have a closer look. Not sure if it’s relevant, but the car is now running on both petrol and a high level LPG injection system, which I might keep for the times when I don’t need all the power :) Is the LPG fuel going to change the oil requirements in my case (considering the cooler and cleaner burning, higher octane, etc.)?

Whatever you do, DONT order parts from these: https://www.autodoc.co.uk/ https://www.buycarparts.co.uk/ https://www.onlinecarparts.co.uk/ I have just been waiting over 3 weeks for parts to arrive without any notification from them to say they had been dispatched or anything. All 3 sites are run by the same company, and they are based in GERMANY - NOT THE UK. Its deliberately misleading since their sites are a .co.uk address. The parts are shipped from Germany and it means you are waiting ages for them to arrive. Carparts4less/eurocarparts have always delivered within 2 days of ordering to me, and at least tits a British company. There is always GSF as an option either.

Okay buddy... 🤪

gavala

I've found it plenty enough to do around 600 rashers of bacon.

Gohan123

2.0Tdi would be enough as when you drain oil you won't get all of it out.....so around 3.8 litres are required for for 2 litre tdi.....always get a 4 litre tub .....Petronas long life. 5w30 vw 507 but if your engine drinks then I recommend 5 litre for top up.

Besford

Oil specs are very confusing these days but many people (on HUKD at least) don't seem to even want to understand. Which would you trust more: information from the manufacturer or some possible numpty on HUKD? If you just buy oil based on viscosity, as long as it's close to what your car needs it's not going to cause any noticeable damage in the short term. However, if you have a decent, high value car then ensuring you stick strictly to the manufacturer's recommendation (full spec, not brand) is the cheapest way to ensure the long life of your engine. Changing the oil more often than required is still cheap preventative maintenance. Getting remarkably high outputs from small engines with long service intervals requires some exceptional engineering which needs protection and your DPF, cat, etc. are also at risk from incorrect oils. If you've got an old knacker with all the oily bits well worn that you're just running until the MoT expires then anything cheap, brown and runny will probably do the job for a while! XD

joco202

Great oil, great price, I've been using it for years. I don't believe in long life oil, I change the oil usually once a year or every 9-10 thousand miles. As for the start stop system. I'm all for saving the planet, but I turn it off as soon as I start the car. Of course when I get to a traffic light that has just changed back to red then I use it as I know that I'll be waiting for a while. It doesn't always turn off in my 1.2 tsi Toledo whereas it always does in my partner's 2.0tdi Skoda Octavia, maybe because of the smaller battery in the Seat.
