Isn't any travel deal a bit hit and miss. Are most travel companies and insurers covering for covid if the situation changes? Seems a bit risky to book anything right now.

One other thing to note about Malaysia is that many of the shops have women serving and we didn't experience any hard sell... this is in stark contrast to somewhere like Egypt

smartypants71

Superb deal, I'm flying out to Dubai next month with BA and the return flights were £350 each without a hotel. This hotel is £100 per room per night so at £425 each for a week including flights this price is an absolute steal. Can't see how they make a penny at this price. Plus this hotel isn't dry (unlike many in Dubai) so you can enjoy a drink there. A lot of people don't realise that the only places visitors can buy servings of alcohol in Dubai is at hotel bars & in restaurants. You can buy bottles at the airport but you cannot buy alcohol of any sort in Dubai shops. Only resident foreigners with a licence can do that. And many hotels, including 4 or 5 star hotels choose not to sell alcohol.

theone1

Artificial or not, it’s pretty amazing. Makes you ponder when you look around and see great tech and engineering all around you in what was a desert little over 30years ago.

I’m just saying people whose villas were on the north side of the Waldorf island (which is almost an hour away from Male vs. just 15 mins for SAii) were complaining they could see the city lights in the distance at night. I also noticed I could easily make out the hospital building (the only tall building in the Maldives) when I went to that side. It does detract from the island paradise vibe... Tip for anyone who’s booked: try to find a resort map online and contact SAii to request a specific room / section. That’s what I did at the Waldorf to be located on the better side with a nice sunset view and not too far from breakfast etc. Tip for anyone with Hilton status: check out this Hilton page to see what benefits you get at the SAii for being Diamond or Gold. At the Waldorf, we got free breakfast, afternoon cocktails, a bottle of Delamotte Blanc de Blancs in our villa etc. The SAii benefits look less lavish but still worth looking into. Tip for anyone who wants but doesn’t have Hilton status: Hilton run a status match to Gold if you have equivalent status at a competitor hotel chain. It lasts 90 days (unless you complete a certain number of stays in the 90 days), so it’s well worth setting a reminder to request the match ~2 months before you go. They will only ever status match you once, so choose wisely if this is when you want to use it and make sure to time it right...

fureddo

I'll probably, I dunno, go to the other side of the island then. Try not to drive past my view though...

msefan

@Chanchi32 amazing deal. We've just booked for June. Can't wait.

i.am.lost

I drove past the SAii last month on a yacht to the new Waldorf Astoria. The SAii is close to Male so don’t expect endless ocean views from one side of the island. It’s also part of this new super-resort they’re building with a recently opened Hard Rock Hotel next door with more construction ongoing. I’m sure it’s very nice but be warned this won’t be the place for a perfect secluded Maldives holiday. However, everything has its price...and this is significantly cheaper than the likes of the Waldorf, Raffles, St Regis etc. Caveat emptor.

We stayed in Ikebukuro, the Prince Sunshine City. Great hotel, but next time I too would prefer to stay in a Shinjuku. In general though, you can’t really go wrong staying anywhere with easy access to the Yamanote line ( I think that’s what it’s called ). We also did a night in Tokyo bay for Disney Sea :)

jaypr

The main places are Shinjuku (if you see pictures of Tokyo, that's usually Shinjuku. Can be very busy and some say seedy) Ginza (posh area) Shibuya (where the famous scramble crossing is, It's pretty nice) Asakusa (where the Kaminarimon "Thunder Gate is, a bit further out though) We stayed at the Tobu Hotel Levant Tokyo in Sumida which is even further out and we got the metro in which didn't take too. long. Next time though I think I'll be booking a hotel in Shinjuku or Shibuya. Obviously the main issues with staying in the city centre is the price and another is room size as the rooms can be pretty small so make sure you check out the square footage before booking. Another thing to note is that they run whats called a limousine bus service from Haneda airport which is essentially a coach from the Airport that stops at lots of hotels in Tokyo, If you stay at one of those it can make things easier too.

wallstreetcrash

So where do you recommend to stay for a first timer going Japan and Tokyo?

jaypr

No problem. I stayed at the Hilton Tokyo Bay last year for a few days which was very convenient for the monorail for Tokyo Disneyland and Disney Sea. The rooms are pretty big for Tokyo too. Odiaba is a bit of a funny place and little far from Shinjuku and Shibuya much like Tokyo Bay was. The second half of the trip we spent closer to the center of Tokyo.

Vast majority of Hilton's, including Doubletree, are hideously outdated and dirty. In comparison to Premier Inn and Travelodge I don't see why people would choose Hilton. Is a free cookie really worth all the sacrifices? Still a good price so heat added but not sure how Doubletree manages a 4* rating.

I suppose it is horses for courses but 40c really is no big deal. We have hiked a six mile trail in the Hajar mountains in 40c without drama, and that was two 60 +year olds carrying 10kg packs. 46c in an ancient quarry close to Aswan was no fun but you can function even in that. We have just come back from Abu Dhabi and that was 40c + every day. The record temperature for the UK is 38.5c

Toptrumpet

This is a lovely hotel right on the beach and I first stayed there probably 20 years ago when it was first built in the middle of nowhere. The last time I stayed there was 6 years ago and took 3 children, we had a suite with a separate lounge and kitchen area that converted into the beds for the kids of a night time. I’d recommend the hotel, but as everyone else says, the heat in June is too hot even to lay on a sun lounger. I’m not convinced by Destination2 after reading a few reviews on tripadvisor that the headline price is not always available. They are only booking agents putting packages together. OP, it is a good deal on price but I’m not voting hot or cold because of the above. In June and July they almost give rooms away in Dubai and you can probably get just a good a deal if not better with someone like travelrepublic who are a genuine booking agent and not a ‘middleman’.

azzy129

Ohhh… calm down! I didn't say you can get this hotel for £29pn, I said alternative 4 star hotels. I even gave alternative flights to Abu Dhabi. If you feel that this is a good deal for that time of year, and considering that there are many mid range and top end hotels to chose from, then this is ideal for those who don't like to put in the legwork and research for other (cheaper) options

dogpatch

Their approval ratings are excellent. You can complete the entire booking online.

Toptrumpet

Are Destination2 a booking agents website, where they get you on the hook with a good offer price and then after they’ve taken your details and your credit card details then punt your requirements around and try and find the deal they offered and when they find their ‘deal has expired’ offer you an alternative at a higher price? Or are they an actual booking site where you deal solely with them?
