Getting the most out of your annual leave in 2023

Having time off work is important for everyone and squeezing the most out of it that you possibly can. Here we look at a few ways to schedule time off around the 2023 Bank Holidays and enable you to get more time off without eating into your annual leave allowance for the year too much.

We start off with....

April

There’s the opportunity here to schedule a long 10-day break by strategically booking just a few days of annual leave. This is because Easter falls on April 7 (Good Friday) and April 10 (Easter Monday) in 2023 and will create the ideal length of time to eat your bodyweight in Easter Eggs.

Days to book off:

Monday 3rd April
Tuesday 4th April
Wednesday 5th April
Thursday 6th April

May – June

At the start of summer, by taking advantage of the three May bank holidays, there’s an opportunity to enjoy ten consecutive days off at the beginning and nine consecutive days off towards the end, by booking just four days of annual leave. The first sees your holiday kick off from Saturday 29 April until Monday 8 May, with the second beginning on Saturday 27 May and finishing Sunday 4 June.

Days to book off:

Tuesday 2nd May
Wednesday 3rd May
Thursday 4th May
Friday 5th May

Tuesday 30th May
Wednesday 31st May
Thursday 1st June
Friday 2nd June

August – September

Later on in the summer, you can take advantage of the August bank holiday and bag yourself another nine days of annual leave, from Saturday 26 August to Sunday 3 September, by booking just four days off and allow yourself some extra time to squeeze a few BBQ's in before the summer comes to a close.

Days to book off:

Tuesday 29th August
Wednesday 30th August
Thursday 31th August
Friday 1st September

December

Lastly, at the end of the year, you can make the most of the festive period by enjoying a 10-day break by requesting just three days of annual leave. This will give you some time to get through all those chocolates you inevitably get for Christmas every year. You’ll be away from 23 December to 2 January and be ready to tackle the New Year after a nice, chilled post Christmas break.

Days to book off:

Wednesday 27th December
Thursday 28th December
Friday 29th December

He put in the post 'The first sees your holiday kick off from Saturday 29 April until Monday 8 May'

agree, common sense, what did we do before all these tik tok hacks specialists lol

plus this only applies to ppl working mon-fri and not on bank Holidays.
I guess tik tok ppl don't realise some ppl work on bank Holidays without extra pay too lol

There was a time when it was nice to have the odd day off here and there, now adays people appreciate a block of break away time off instead of fragmented fun.

I'd rather book the time off when it suits me, it only costs an extra day or two if not using bank holidays. You can have nine days off for the cost of five days of annual leave any time, saving one extra day when it's likely a lot of other people are going to be travelling at that time isn't always worth the trade off.

It's true, especially when you don't have kids. It makes no sense to book the same time as everyone else because it's double the money.

I'll be the first to say thanks then. I usually book around BH's as much as possible to maximise days away from work.

    Really useful post. thnak you.

agreed, I am horribly random about my leave other than the main holiday so this helped me focus and get a few extra longer breaks

Surely this only benefits those who don’t work bank holidays?

Those who work bank holidays will have to book the bank holidays off also to get any of these lengthy periods mentioned

Yup - my employer usually finishes early Christmas Eve, at 3 or 4pm then reopens after the holidays on the 3rd January - with slight changes if weekends affect the 25/26th December, and 1st/2nd January as bank holidays. Apart from that, they never shut.

So in my case, I get 39 days holiday, lose 7 for Christmas/New Year, and have to choose when I want the rest.

Might wish to add that this is not for N.Ireland.

I've never understood the point of these posts/articles. You still have the same number of days off no matter what days you take, and surely it's just common sense to book then near bank holidays if you want more consecutive days off.

Some people need to have a purpose.

Using that logic if you take 19 Fridays off you get 57 days holiday... More if you match it with bank holiday Mondays

I should post a tik tok video! (edited)

I for one hate working for a living so anything that takes me away from the place is good. (edited)

Will this work for hotukdeals staff? (Asking for a friend)

Does that person's name rhyme with 'sandy veg'?

You still using same number of hours/holidays from work and usually going anywhere on bank holiday weekends/weeks is expensive!

My time is fairly flexible. Instead I just wait until good deals or jet 2 flight discount codes appear. That way I'm always getting the best deal, I always tend to book in off peak seasons, when prices are generally lower, the weather isn't so hot that it stops you doing things, and everywhere is quieter.

    You sound like fun

this only works if people get those bank holidays off, to which there's no legal requirement in the uk to allow staff to do so

anyone who doesn't work weekends can take a friday or monday off to make a longer weekend. if someone hasn't realised that by now they are beyond help

anyone who doesn't get those days off automatically would need to book those days off plus the other days, and there's no mention or disclaimer about this in the first post, it's just based on a presumption of people getting those days off, and also a further presumption of people working a 5 day week. it literally doesn't help anyone get any more holidays than they are due

No way? Really. Im sure people know this.

Aww man, been doing this for years.
Now my colleagues have found out so we have to rotate.

id imagine this happens to a lot of people. my mum used to work for M&S. if she didnt ask for holidays during a school holiday on the first day of the new holiday request year there was zero chance she would get them. The vast majority of M&S staff are mums who want holidays.

if she tried a trick like this, got rejected because she wanted holidays others had taken, then she would need to put another request on the second day of the year after being told she'd been rejected... by that point she'd have lost any chance at getting school holidays at all for that year. Go the opposite of this if you want cheaper and less stressful holidays...
Unless ofc you have kids then it's just stressful regardless, might aswell work extra and hide. (edited)

Doesn't work if you do continental shifts! I usually work bank holidays (including Christmas) and then get the extra days off during the year ... whenever I want them.

I've been doing this for a while now but it seems the cat is out of the bag and this is getting very popular online. I wonder how long it'll be before employees catch on and put some limitations in place.

Time this was removed, no? This is a deal site not an advice page.
