Just install for the period you need and then uninstall it when your kid is back.

I will be little worried about blocking any other contact for the period, maybe just in case group leaders want to get in touch, ISD calls are costly, WhatsApp calls are free.

Not sure privacy is a that big a deal with WhatsApp when we have zillion other things doing exactly what you are trying to prevent. (edited)

As probably more have FB than WA, although owned by the same company, what is wrong with making free calls through Messenger? It is just as reliable, and does not require your number being available to anybody

Won't install WhatsApp for privacy reasons yet you own a smartphone couldn't make it up. In all seriousness though your only option is a burner phone with a temp number but that seems a bit extreme.

Am I missing something here, or is it not the case that other contacts in your phone can contact you on WhatsApp if it is installed?
    Enlighten me!

If you installed WhatsApp, on a secondary phone with your kid as the only contact on that device?

Or you could install WhatsApp, give it no permissions and let your kid initiate a chat first.

I'm assuming you're an android user?

Also why is the only way to share updates with you via WhatsApp? You could also both install Signal Messenger and communicate that way privately

In addition to blocking contacts (a bit extreme) you can set your Whatsapp status as 'Busy' thereby creating no expectation that you'll either answer or reply to anybody that tries to contact you.

Also in Privacy settings you can stop it revealing to others whether you're currently online, the last time you were online, etc.

In Android you can install apps on your Second Space, which would have no access to your contacts etc. Whether or not it will ring or give notifications when you are in the normal operation, I'm not sure.

    found it
    ........................
    CALLS AND SMS
The spaces do not block calls or SMS. When you receive an incoming call, it will be shown in Second space too. Similarly, you can make calls from the Second space. However, since both spaces don’t share contacts by default, you will not see the contact name.

Or set up a second profile on your phone, as that will also restrict access. (edited)

I have whatsapp installed on my tablet, which doesn't have any contacts on it.

I think you'r worrying too much over this and verging on paranoia. Is anyone else really going to care what your number is? What do you imagine is going to happen? People wouldn't even know who you are if you don't add your name to your profile. It'd just be a list of numbers.
