Most rural areas are cat 4 LTE which gets you 30mbps in practice. The posh areas selected by EE in cities get cat 6 which is 2 channel authentication and your device needs 2 radios to make use of it to get the 60mbps this is not 5g ?!? Nowhere in the country does 5g..... Yet

jUsT2eXy

So can someone clarify the following (country of use will be the USA): 1. Using a 3 SIM with preloaded data, an Android phone that enables WiFi hotspot to allow other devices to connect will not work as 3 blocks tethering. True or False? 2. Using the same 3 SIM with preloaded data in a MiFi device will allow multiple devices to connect and use the data. True or false? Having experienced scenario one last year and being told via this thread that scenario 2 works.... I'm a little confused as to what the difference is. Both personal hotspot and MiFi are the same thing in essence. Why would scenario 1 not work but scenario 2 does? Any clarification/help is much appreciated guys. Thanks.

got my 790s around 2 years ago... they are prefect ! cost 180 at that time, but well worth of money

Ccontrol

Atleast you picked up on.

I like the way everyone has ignored this link to the TP-LINK M7350 that's £22 cheaper and does pretty much the same thing. Better too I'd say as it has a full sized sim card slot which makes it more adaptable. I have one of these too and used it in Japan back in April and it worked a treat.

Plug it in, connect your WiFi to it and go to tplinkrepeater.net (if setting up 1st time, the website loads up itself). Then you just follow on-screen instruction - scan for networks, choose yours, change extended WiFi name and set password (you can keep router password as well). Voilà, all done.

nokiafusion

+1 I have this and it’s a one button push on the extender and another on your router to connect. It even has its own app so you can customise it. You can even turn the lights out on it. I have it on my landing and works great as a night light. Never dropped connection once and had it about a year.

PIXIE.AND.DIXIE

Got one and works well. Use it to bridge gap from router to garden by plugging in end of house.

baker19811

Both choose one or the other I have it and it works fine but if you have a rubbish unreliable router that drops signal even when your near it don’t bother with this

Have this and it’s terrible. Loses connection all the time for some reason. Have reset it to factory settings too but still doesn’t help. Looking into mesh WiFi now or the Uniquiti APs.

Hmm - quite disappointed in the performance. I knew not to reasonably expect 100+Mb/s (Using the ethernet port). I have no idea what your '600 Mbps' is supposed to represent when the box claims 100Mb/s. In my flat for two sockets next to each other I could only get aroud ~36Mb/s, slower in real world terms than my Wi-fi. These were supposed to replace running ethernet across my floor, but this just won't do. Yes you can run off the list of environmental issues that can affect speeds but I still feel duped.

I’ve got this deal offered today, but as taking an extra line to my existing expiring contract. Will transfer my number over next week. Not quite sure who on earth can use that much data, you must be watching something on your phone, but hey, it was much better than 12GB for £15

My friend said this is better than just wireless plug or dongle. Is that true? Its for my son's pro gaming. Wi fi downstairs so need something for his room. Any recommrndations please?

mcbain

Had issues with these. Had then connected to use the same SSID as my router but it would never connect to strongest signal. Even after resetting to their own SSID devices would connect to the unit in the other room not the one right next to it. Got sick of it all in the end and splashed out on the bt whole home mesh WiFi system. Expensive but it's been great so far. Intelligently swaps devices to the strongest point in the mesh. Obviously a different price range to this though.

darkstryder360

Yeh even the Hub 3 is a pain. Took my Xbox home for Xmas and tried hooking it up to my parents BT and wouldnt accept connection unless I had fiddled with the DMZ and port forward settings. My virgin at home, a doddle.

Dan__

I bought their wifi boosters a while back and its utterly useless! I would never buy or use any of their products again. Ive even had the bthub routers and they were awful apart from the hub3 which worked better than the newer ones at least.

darkstryder360

Ironic that they're BT, yet their broadband and WiFi is probably THE worst on the market anyway.

Voted hot. These are pretty handy and work well although I only really used it a couple of times. Been trying to sell mine on ebay for the last couple of weeks with no luck lol.

Bikertov

Exactly the case. I have taken these on holiday for that very reason. In the past I have taken a full-blown router, but nowadays I take this. Also to holiday apartments that have internet, but limited connections. At home, I have a BT TV box connected to the internet via one, although you don't get full functionality when streaming via WiFi.

CraigT

Second post at this link suggests it could: https://forum.lede-project.org/t/help-setting-up-openvpn-router-with-aws/6487/2

CraigT

I assume you could use it to turn a hotel wired connection into a wireless one for your devices (laptop, mobile etc). Also the reverse (as I believe you're suggesting) to utilise the hotel wireless on a device that needs a wired connection (old laptop, Raspberry Pi maybe?)

CraigT

I don't believe so, but I am fairly sure you can use a USB 3G/4G modem with the SIM card in.

crazymonkey

To avoid all the complication, I've just re-purposed a spare phone that has user replaceable batteries to work as a hotspot :)

I ordered one a few months ago when it was £4.99. It never worked very well it would constantly need restarting for me to be able to connect to the gui, when it did work the device was very slow. It also only supports 3G "only" dongles, not those that also support 4G. I purchased a TP Link MR3020 which although more expensive works perfectly. I wouldn't use the device as a 3G wireless router, although I think it may be a good WAP or bridge for this price.

You can set them up with the same SSID and wifi channel, but they must slightly overlap with your router or other extender to wifi roam on your device. I ended up plugging a spare router into it as an access point less of a headache than the powerline plugs built in range extender.
