I've requested a refund via PayPal, I found my details and it hadn't even been dispatched!

Neostar

It's likely that it might be stuck somewhere in the postal system, as I recently received an item from China after 3 months of waiting. The tracking showed it arrived in the UK and stayed in the customs office for over almost 2 months!! why I don't know but I recieved the item eventually, now I just need to email them to pay as they refunded me thinking it was lost in transit

dkj255

I ordered from France on 25MAY and it's still not showing as despatched. I emailed a few days after to ask when it would be sent and after about three days they replied asking me if I'd received it. I told them I hadn't and wanted to know the tracking number and which courier it was sent by (if they're asking if I received it then they must have posted it?) but didn't get a reply so I've now requested a refund. I don't mind things taking a little while and I have bought from China before where 3wks+ is normal for delivery, but from France it really should be here by now (CS mobiles ship from Spain and always arrive within 7 days - I bought from France for customs reasons but expected it would be quicker), and it's simply not on to show as not even despatched a week after paying. Question is, which will arrive? the phone or the refund?

rachelandgromit

I can't find my order confirmation but I'm sure I had one but I have the PayPal receipt. With ordering via the France link I thought it would be sooner.

AndersJ

Good. At least PayPal will refund then if it doesn't turn up. I have ordered from them before and they took 3 to 4 weeks. But 1: it was with shipping from China and 2: it was before Covid-19 so obviously different factors at play. Hopefully someone else here who did order can give their experience. Did you get a confirmation email btw? Did the order definitely go through?

How do you know for sure? Anyone you know whose warranty had expired was successful in getting a free replacement like this? Also, was it free to return? In other words, did you have to pay delivery charges or did Nokia cover it / provided a freepost address?

nyum

It was like a month within it. Though because it's a common problem, if you fill in the online form and send it back, they usually just sort it out.

Crossbow

Ooh, that's excellent, was it still under warranty? Others, who's warranties expired when it happened, got nothing.

nyum

This happened to me. Contacted Nokia and they replaced it with an upgraded model and dual sim one. Still love the phone.

Not sure that is accurate, heard that Foxconn (Taiwan) has stepped up investment in HMD Global more recently '(HMD Global) is owned by a private fund called Smart Connect LP, registered in Luxemburg, under the leadership of ex-Nokia executive Jean-Francoise Baril.' https://www.androidguys.com/tips-tools/who-is-hmd-global/

Had this phone for around 2-3 months, the battery would NEVER last a full day, would be lucky to even get past 8 hours with more than 20% battery left. Everytime you take a picture, it takes 3-5% of battery away too, probably with the sheer amount of processing its having to do. The fingerprint reader was also unusable. If they could've sorted out those 2 things, it'd be a brilliant phone. Gave up with it in the end and went to a Mate 20 Pro for around £300 when they were doing a cashback promotion, get through a full day with more than 50% battery most days with it. Pictures are amazing too

Dogs_Nads

I had the issue on my Nokia 8 twice (and apart from that it's a cracking phone). Had to return to Nokia in Hungary. First time got a new screen fitted (even though the issue is on the motherboard..). That worked for 3 months then went again. Still under 2 years warranty sent back again. This time they advised that they had no spare parts as a result they sent me a new phone, and to top it all they had no more of the 64gb model so I got a 128gb model as an upgrade for free. 6 months in and no issues, but it has taken away a little from an otherwise excellent phone, and I say that as someone who came from LG after suffering from Bootloop on the also otherwise excellent G4. Not sure where I'll go on the next phone might go to the 9 if it has no issues..or just bite the bullet and go Pixel or OnePlus.

thk78

Kept the phone for less than a month. Loved the clean UI, the build quality and the responsiveness. Apart that, appalling fingerprint sensor and very, very disappointing camera, for quality and operation.

Who needs a phone with a spare battery with the surge cheap large capacity powerbanks, rapid fast charge and powersave and ultra powersave built into latest smart phones?

amour3k

BINGO!!, I couldn't agree with you more there. :-D Roll on the smartphone version of the original Nokia 3310, from back in the Day ... The only thing that championed it at the time (ofcourse), was it's immediate successor, the Nokia 3330. :-D Ahhhhhhhhh, the age of when pay&go phone's in this Country was now coming of age, lol. And has since done a full circle upon itself too. :-) That aside though, everybody wants the phone sleeker, slimmer, sexier, and ... The realty is (fortunately/unfortunately), is, something has to 'give', right?. And that would inevitably be the abilities for you to so easily remove the batteries from your own phone's now, etc, right?. But though, if you aren't necessarily bothered with bothering yourself with any of them (arguably) frivolous thing's anymore?, then ofcourse ... (Good or bad), that's literally the nature of game now, I guess? :-D But alas, life ... hehehe.

jco83

I love smartphones with removable battery as can have 1 or 2 spare and usually there is an external charger available, so you always have a spare fully charged one to swap in (strong)

I really liked my N7 ... I replaced it with a P30 and while it's quicker with a brighter screen I find the Nokia more usable. It just works 100% solid. Dunno, I kinda regret the upgrade now. P30 is fine but I went from £11/month Sim only on the Nokia (cost £200) to £34/month with the free P30.

catavento

That's interesting because I had a couple of Nokia 8s a while back and one had that dull grey thing you describe, really washed out and miserable looking. I wondered if it had been refurbished with a bad panel and the seller didn't tell me. The other had really good punchy colours, but then the charging port on that was useless.

Quality of the case and screen protector (tempered glass) seem as expected, decent for the price. Phone battery is reporting 92% of original design capacity via the AccuBattery app.

morgie

All continuing to seem good with this phone (way above my expectation of the Grade C description). I'm starting to quite like the smaller form factor compared to my Nokia 7 Plus. Shame it's 3GB RAM / 32GB storage compared to 4GB / 64GB in the 7 Plus, but most of the time I probably won't notice the RAM difference (maybe less background apps open). A few nice differences in Android 10 already, the 7 Plus should catch up in the next couple of months. Anyway, unbelieveable bargain for £51! As I actually now care about preserving the great condition I've ordered a cheapy bumper and screen protector (£3.19 on eBay) - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/For-Nokia-7-1-Case-Clear-Gel-Cover-Glass-Screen-Protector/352674040484 Can comment when they arrive (by Monday) as to the quality, expecting basic.

Can you clarify...Wondering if the comment is relevant to this model or more generally? I've had a Nokia 8 for over a year and it's been great all round including battery life and quick charging speed. (P.s.old skool Nokia 311 etc used to last weeks ;) )

I would stay away from Nokia smartphones. Their battery life and quality is very bad.

I started a PayPal dispute after a month of no dispatch and then suddenly they decided to send them and gave tracking details. By the time PayPal had messed around the buds had arrived and so my case was cancelled. I've not had problems with any other site ordering mobiles etc

gtd65

PayPal resolved all my problems, so that's a bonus if ordering.

gtd65

Wouldn't consider them either. I've received fake AKG earbuds that were horrific and one set only worked on one channel. Then received multiple dashcams that were total junk that recorded in 240 or perhaps 480 interpolated rather than the advertised 1080. I thought they'd (TomTop) been banned previously, due to all the negative feedback?

I have 2 Nokia 808s but they are almost unusable as a smart phone these days which is such a shame as the camera is still amazing.

RatherCurious

Fingerprint sensor is still hit and miss, lack of MicroSD and headphone jack is a downside. Camera... Each individual camera is weak (very small sensor), however the combined hardware is good in principle (better than these pesky 48MP things when it comes to detail) but is massively let down by HMD's lackluster effort to continue and enhance the software. As it stands the camera array's strengths are: excellent dynamic range, generally good natural colours, good detail when the shot is perfect, but due to lack of OIS you might not get the first one right. The slowness of fusing the images is forgiven if the results are always spectacular, but they're not! Camera is a battery hog, it will drain a few percent after a just a few shots. Low light photography is awful. The design is great, I love how they're blended the camera array at the back flush with the body. GCAM on this uses just one camera and then even with all its processing might, can't do much with such a weak individual sensor. In my opinion the Nokia 808 from 2012 beats this in everything except dynamic range. I've tested the Nokia 9 PV extensively against the Nokia 8.1 (with GCAM), and that produces more consistent results, albeit the N9 PV is slightly better with natural colours and dynamic range.

Macey7000

I'm a big Nokia/HMD fan but the reviews for the phone, especially the cameras are very disappointing. Great price but not sure it's the best choice out there

Chunk266

£345 on Amazon. Running Android one so the software's great and probably the biggest draw of this phone. Camera and fingerprint sensor are weak points.

I ordered one from amazon as none in stock near me Argos. I bought one of these in the prime day deals from warehouse but the camera was faulty and they would only refund not replace. One thing I would say is I had a good play around with it and found no issue with the fingerprint reader, worked fine for me.

I'm not a pro on phones however I have the mate 20 pro. Fingerprint scanner fails majority of the time. At one point I took off the passcode and installed codes on private individual apps but then took that off yesterday because there was an update and assumed scanner would have improved. Alas, it didn't. Having said that face recognition is excellent and overall the entire phone is awesome so I can't judge an entire phone just because the in screen fingerprint reader is awful.

xavierluther

No need to go back to passcode, smart unlock via BT works a dream at home, as does 2D face rec. FP scanner not as bad as described btw, but I wasn't an early buyer - other Samsung owners reported problems with theirs, my Huawei Mate 20 Pro fails also sometimes. In-screen FPS reliability not a Nokia-specific problem Great deal at this price, flagship with midrange price tag (half the price of S10)

Just take a power bank. Many of best smartphones: iPhones, Samsung flagships, Pixel phones, all had typically average battery life until very recently, some still do. Hard to balance with powerful performance. Only new class of 2019 like ZenFone 6, or Huawei last year, particularly Mate 20X, have changed game for good. Also some flagships rely now on wireless charging, in office and at home. If you go on picture-taking trip, power bank is essential.

dwoodsy90

Personally, if you went out for a day and had a phone you 100% know won't last it the whole day, it is a massive negative.

xavierluther

Read also expert reviews, but remember those were written when this phone was priced £549 at launch in April. Nokia tried to improve some of the early niggles over the air, with a massive update package. Some things like the average battery life are more difficult to improve though, or the time-and-battery-consuming picture processing (5 rear cameras shooting at same time, no other phone faces same challenge) At this mid-range price, its limitations are much easier to tolerate. It has a premium design, great quality build as all Nokias (despite what's written above), wireless charging (which helps to get to the end of the day), a very good screen, simple interface, great software support. Many positives. No, it didn't make it among the best phones of 2019, but at this price it doesn't have to. Photography lovers will love to tweak the pictures in Lightroom.

craigstephens

Surprised no one had said this sets off a phobia they read about but don't have

thekitkatshuffler

When I bought the Nokia 8 I was really pulling for Nokia to come good. Within 6 months most of the embedded lettering of their logo had fallen out of the back plate, the battery is flakey, the fingerprint scanner is slow and the Android updates aren't as quick as they should be for a vanilla implementation. Disappointing build quality for Nokia and reason enough to prevent me buying another model.
