Wilko is 'on the brink of collapse: :(

Posted 3rd Aug 2023
News has only been released but it would be an absolute shame to see it go under. I would be interested to know why it's failing. Any theories?

Wilko's demise has been a long time coming. They have been plagued with poor ranging, stock availability, and poor store locations. I remember reading one of Wilko's longstanding business strategies was to range products which are not popular or easy to find in their stores, so that when customers need an item, they think of going to Wilko first. Unfortunately, with the shelves half empty customers have been let down, and that hard earned reputation is being destroyed. Once customers go there and don't find what they need, they will end up going elsewhere.

I think a lot of Wilko's problems lie with their store sizes too - I have seen newer, smaller branches but they also have a substantial amount of larger branches taken over from other retailers such as Woolworths, Safeway etc. The naturally higher rents that accompany larger spaces hurts a lot more when you have so many gaps in product range. I think a lot of 2 floor branches could fit all their stock on 1 floor based on how bad availability has been.

The family led ownership of Wilko have lost sight of what made the company successful and now it is too late to do anything. I think Hilco will take it over, or some other private equity asset stripper, and run it to the ground.

Other times you see single floor branches in buildings the same height as neighbouring shops which have 2 floors.

ClearPay is unregulated credit so no statutory enforcement/assistance route.

ClearPay has a shoulder-sloping dispute system that is intended to require zero input from CP:
CP even openly describes it as "self-service".
And good luck attempting to find any clear t&c / policy relating to how CP will (not) intervene / oversee any transaction dispute.

10 days since issue is beyond CPs self-proclaimed 7 days merchant response period so OP has option to self-serve:

That’s a bit callous. That’s 12000 jobs at risk, and you’re moaning that your 10p fabric softener wasn’t available for click and collect?!
  4. mutley1's avatar
they are very good value so will be sad to see them go

This is no surprise. It's been on the cards for a long time. My local has been mentally closed for months, just waiting for the inevitable.

Was the perfect replacement for Woolworths but they've gone the same way as them.
  6. RootBeerFloat's avatar
No surprise at all. All their stores I've visited look like they haven't had a deep-clean in decades, and all of the staff clearly wish they were anywhere else.

A real shame - regularly bought gardening / bird stuff from Wilko, but for the last couple of years they never seemed to have stock so I'd leave without buying anything (which is the reverse of the previous trend, when I'd pop in to buy one item and end up buying loads).

"I would be interested to know why it's failing. Any theories?"

It's a privately owned family business - I got the impression from some early articles that perhaps there was some family bust up that affected the running of the company leading to mismanagement.

Not diversifying enough, when their target shopper has the choice of them, B&M, Home Bargains, etc as well as Amazon.

Selling off Warehouses for £40m only for the buyer to sell them on 3 days later for double the price.

There’s more if you’ve followed the story for long enough. The moment they went to paying rents monthly it smacked of cash flow problems & that’s got to be 18-24 months ago at least.

    That's depressing 😔

My city centre is going to be worthless.
We've lost loads of shops in the last few years.
    slimy31's avatar
Ours has been dead for ages. They're currently doing up the main high street with all sorts of fancy stuff, but personally I'd like shops to go in rather than pretty mosaics to walk on.

I'll definitely be more annoyed when the local Wilko closes than I was when Woolworths or Debenhams went. My whole life it's been a cheap, reliable goto for certain kinds of products. Sad times.

Shame, good value items, used to go in here instead of b&q, curtain poles and paint half the price. (edited)

we called this months ago when they changed to monthly payments to suppliers
    TheUrbis's avatar
What were they previously? Most retailers I know work on 60-90 day payment terms!
  14. Onlydongles's avatar
Very predictable, ever since they started chargin £ 2.50 for a click and collect paid online order. The writing was on the wall.

Sad though. Businesses are run by beancounters these days ,it seems, and marketeers dont get a shot at deciding what wil sell or what people would like ot buy.
    FleetFanatic's avatar
They’ve been in trouble long before that £2.50 charge was introduced.

Lots of hints of cash flow problems.

And obvious that their larger stores crippled them financially.
  16. King65's avatar
Allowing people to take their pets in there with them has stopped me going there.

    Just intrigued why?

    Sad news
I will miss Wilko if it goes, my local store is good compared to the others in nearby towns and citites.
The gardening items are excellent and reasonably priced. (a bargain in the end of season sale)

tagging you in incase you dont see it on the news

Very sad news indeed. I love my local and my heart goes out to the staff. I hope it will be saved. (edited)

I do like the cleaning wipes, and also their modular storage boxes.
I am a bit gutted if this goes ahead, as I have about 150 of the storage boxes for my Lego.
Haven't been able to buy any new ones for ages, as they are always out of stock.
Would hate to have to get a different type of storage.
    AX31's avatar
If this isn’t a first world problem - I don’t know what is. But yes, that is a bit annoying.

I'm quite new to Wilko there is one one the next town but i had only stated using it over the last few years when I could get there. It was quite a smart shop and I thought the buyers had done a decent job of stocking pretty decent products for the price.living on a tight budget I thought their towels and face cloths were well priced
  20. cowtc's avatar
I hope they are saved and follows their slogan, 'Where there's Wilko, there's a way'.

I’m going to be raiding my local store, for garden stuff
    mutley1's avatar
ha ha. i was going to go today but i haven't been able to but i am going tomorrow if it doesn't rain and clear their shelf of dog treats
  22. deleted9453's avatar
    Amazon. That's why.
    FleetFanatic's avatar
You could argue many companies - B&M, Home Bargains, all competing for the same customers buying tat.
  23. HellriderUKDeals69's avatar
I went into a Wilko store last year and they were selling mostly tat. The Range is better.
    RootBeerFloat's avatar
    Only mostly?
You must have visited one of the good ones

    Been in trouble for years.

They were crazy to stay in the high street when most others were closing high street stores. Why would you pay sky high rent for high street location, when out of town is usually double the size for slightly less rent.

They were always out of the way, or in weird locations I found. So you had to go to them not just a quick nip in when passing by.

They also never really diversified into food etc. Which was another failure. (edited)

My local one has been like a jumble sale for so long now. Shelves mostly empty. Stuff all over the floor.
  26. NicPowell's avatar
It never has any stock so I'm not surprised
    lee19285's avatar
I noticed the shelves in my local have never really been fully stocked since COVID. Noticed couple days back the confectionary aisle was basically bare, more dust than sweets.

I'll be sad if they close my local. The staff in there are helpful and a lot of their goods are a decent price. The last 6 months they had permanently closed the self service tills and I wondered if they had IT issues they couldn't resolve without spending a lot of money.
    EnbyEmily's avatar
No idea, but it’s not a nationwide issue. Durham branch was self service only unless paying by cash.
  28. mutley1's avatar
went into my local this afternoon and the shop was very busy. looks like everyone is hoarding stuff before they go they may actually end up making a huge profit from the panic raid (edited)
    NuffinisFree's avatar
Did you clear the shelves of dog food?
  29. SUPERCOOLWILLOW's avatar
mines in a great loccation & often popping in for stuff & the prices are very good & its always full of proudcts (B&M & that are all out the way esp the only to get there is either by car or bus)
  30. RootBeerFloat's avatar
The sad part is, every single one of their shop-floor staff has at one point suggested an idea that would have prevented this, and was ignored.
    EnbyEmily's avatar
    Which was?

The following 14 stores have been announced to close, some already have though.

    Birmingham - The Fort
    Bournemouth
    Shipley
    Stockton
    Scunthorpe
    Leicester - Narborough Rd
    Rotherham
    Skegness
    Grantham
    Merthyr Tydfil
    Cleethorpes
    Woolwich
    Redditch
    Llanelli

Though it does appear some of these stores have closed already, some quite a while ago as far as last year, so not sure where The Mirror is getting their list from?

    Home deliveries have been suspended
Click & Collect is still available
  33. kenny009uk's avatar
I am chasing a refund for an item thats gone missing during home delivery. They dont have a phone number and im messaging them over social media. Its likely pulling teeth. 10 days later. Anyone else any advice?
    RootBeerFloat's avatar
Stop wasting your time. Contact your bank.
  34. miaomiaobaubau's avatar
Some of the staff is rude especially the older one and that is one of the reason for the closure. I always request a manager if i need them to search the back of the shop for an item which they suppose to have in stock.
    mutley1's avatar
yeah, i have noticed that their staff have similar attitude to those at lidl or poundland. not rude as such, but not very friendly. could do with customer interface training!
  35. noahsdad's avatar
I find Wilko, Lidl, Aldi staff okay. Maybe its regional culture and attitude or store dependent. Sports Direct staff is a mixed experience. But then Zero Hours/min wage/pressure to upsell... what can one expect really.

    Sad to see Wilko's demise.
