York holiday

Posted 23rd Aug 2023
I would like to ask the community for some advice on a York holiday. Before the people with "just Google it", we're here to keep this forum alive. Advice on parking, hotels, and things to do (2 adults and 2 kids 12b and 8g). Thanks

You say 'Community' when you've never posted a deal in 10 years LMAO.

it’s funny that the one person to post that reply, also isn’t part of this “community” (edited)

I would suggest you visit to the famous Shambles while your there, its home to the Potions cauldron and The York ghost merchants and the shop that must not be named (harry potter themed). It will especially appeal if the kids like Harry potter as the Shambles is suppose to have inspired Diagon Alley.
It does get busy though, queuing time for the ghost merchants is often around 2 hours, this queue does make the all already busy street harder for people to squeeze through.
You'll find street performs near by as well, I've seen magicians and even sword swallower performing live.

York does have so many attractions, I hope you have a nice time.

There's always the York designer outlet as well if you fancy trying to grab a bargain.

We’re heading back to York in November and this time weve opted for the principal hotel as it’s right by the train station.
However last time we did stay in Hampton Piccadilly and parked the car in a local Q car park.
Shambles is amazing, so many winding streets and lots to see just from eye level, loads of Harry Potter themed shops and tours, the train museum is a must! You’ve got the chocolate story, river boats, city boats etc
It’s a beautiful city and we can’t wait to go back.

We have visited York few years ago, we were staying in premier inn, just 10 min walk to the Center. They had weathspoons downstairs so breakfasts sorted. Car park was few min walk but from what I remember, it didn’t belong to premier inn but it was recommended and expensive( around ten for a day).

Stayed in this one twice. Reasonable price and close by to walk around to everything. Also cheap and cheerful breakfasts. Also parked where you've mentioned. Discounted rate for a Q named one. I'd recommend that premier Inn.

York castle museum - has an indoor street setup inside (amazing on the leadup to Christmas), 60s section, toy bit, and other bits and bobs.

York museum is great and is surrounded by some lovely gardens, lots of fashion, Roman stuff in the museum.

Railway museum is free and full of trains (as you would expect 😝)

York Chocolate story is very child friendly and gives a great interactive story of how chocolate is made and the history of it, you get to make some chocolate and try bits an bobs.

York Shambles is an area which has lots of shops that to me sell mostly absolute tat, but there is a great chocolate shop in the middle of it all which is fantastic.

York Clifford tower has had a major revamp

Yorvik is ok, I have fond memories, but went back again recently and it's just ok

Grand Opera House has had a revamp and we've seen many theatre performance there, and they have all the major touring ones

York dungeons probably won't be suitable

Can have a nice walk round on the old city walls, but it's a bit tricky to follow them because they don't go all the way round in a perfect uninterrupted circle

Betty's Tearoom are a very fancy place to have breakfast or lunch

The Star Inn the city is a lovely place to eat and we've never been disappointed

If your gonna do Betty’s pre book, then you get to use the room upstairs rather than queuing for hours on end. It’s pricy but gorgeous x
