Recommend me your best clothes washing detergent?

Posted 4th Dec 2023
I've finally gotten to the bottom of my dry powder detergent box after many months and would like to try something new

Normally I just get supermarket brand but i'm totally open to 'premium' stuff this time - whether liquid or powder, or whatever!

I do want something nice smelling - I add those scent boosters sometimes

I don't normally use fabric softener but if people recommend it, i'll get that too!

So please let me know what brand/scent you recommend

Powder detergents are generally better than liquids, because liquid detergents are more limited in what ingredients they can contain to avoid interactions in the bottle, for example they can't put oxygen bleach, or bleach activator (TAED) in liquids because it would break down the enzymes.

The residue left coating the inside of the machine from liquid detergents also tends to trap moisture, providing bacteria a medium to grow in, so the machine is more likely to smell bad.

Oxygen bleach not only is an effective stain remover, it kills bacteria and viruses both in your laundry and in the machine. Oxygen bleach + TAED makes a highly effective biocide (peracetic acid).

Incidentally bacterial biofilm build up in a washing machine can cause the aluminium spider to corrode and fail prematurely. Leaving the door + draw open between washes to reduce the moisture level will help to combat both mould and bacteria, as will an occasional 60°C+ hot wash.

Still liquid detergent is more popular than powder, and the manufactures charge more for it, and can sell you extra additives to make up for its deficiencies, like oxygen bleach based stain remover, laundry sanitiser, and scent beads, so it is more profitable for them.

I usually use powder for light colour and liquid for dark colour.
Usually buying from Aldi or Lidl.

I use Dr Beckmann Magic leaves, on offer in Lidl. Just one sheet per wash totally dissolve in water. Space saving in your cupboards and fab to take on holiday for hand washing.

I used Smol for years until they jacked up the price to unsustainable levels.

I now use Morrisons Savers detergent and think it's great.

Not too fussy about the smell as long as my clothes smell clean.

I never use fabric conditioner as I dislike the oily film it gives clothes and towels.

I use that Easy branded powder, mainly because it's cheap.

And use white vinegar as a softener for towels and keeping limescale at bay

In over 30 years of doing laundry and using just about every product that ever was made at one point or another I find they ALL do the same job, more or less. I use whatever is good value. All stains are pretreated before washing.

Never used Sofener in my life - biggest waste of money

Don't use softener, it coats towel fibres making them less absorbent.

I gave up on detergent a couple of years ago. I use soap nuts these days. One 1kg bag will last a year and it is completely tree huggingly green.

I have never heard of soap nuts, where do you get them from?
