Couple of different Airfix in Lidl Milton Keynes (Fen st). There were also some quick build ones but not sure if they were the same price.

One of the paint pots in mine had dried up. Looking at reviews of the kits, this seems like a common issue. Still fun to make, but better to have expectations managed.

1:76 scale vehicles, but 1:72 scale figures. What's that all about, Airfix?

Glue, simply everywhere. Ah good memories. :)

Thanxs, about 40 years since i last did one (highfive)

Only on starter sets these days. I've just completed my first in 30 years. A hurricane starter set. Cant remember from when I was a kid in the 80s if it was the same with starter sets. The acrylic paints are like £1.79, enamel a little more. Best looking at humbrol site, airfix, hobbycraft or ideally your local model/hobby store. .

Prefer the German tanks myself Sturms, Jagds and Tigers! Takes me back to the 80's and Dioramas and military modelling magazine and all those excellent model fairs that used to pop up at your local community hall and exhibition centre - Days of the Clyde Model Dockyard in Glasgow established in 1789 would you believe and bankrupted by Playstations and Xboxes ..sad....sniff sniff... ;( ;( ;(

Nothing stopping you hanging a tank if space is that short.

Just a little advice - planes are bit "better" to storage as you can hang them somewhere.

£4.99 when in supermarkets Also this tends to be cheaper as well in Amazon, as it usually retails for around £7... but I guess a tenner is not terrible when you're bored at home, although I wouldn't say this is a deal. Very rarely you'll find this at more than £10

XP200

I think everyone back in the 70s had built a airfix Messershmitt, Spitfire and a 1930s Alfa Romeo at some point. lol Heat, but just enough to get the transfers to stick on the wings and tail. ;)

Clay2019

These starter sets are fantastic. You get far more glue and paint than you need, so if you enjoy doing them you've got some resources left over when you move on to other models. They're in Lidl & Aldi a couple of times a year for about £7, but this deal's still great for anyone without a time machine.

Ah, thanks for that :) it's this apparently https://www.lidl.co.uk/en/p/big-toys-event/airfix-airfix-gift-set/p27382 I had a peek at the Spitfire kit, it looks OK., although these days half the instructions are health and safety twaddle. From building these things as a kid, you really need an X-acto knife and a small file to make a decent job, and liquid plastic cement was easier to use

They have a tank and a ship at lidl which has a larger range of kits starting next Thursday

Wow. Do you have issues? No one said anything about intelligence, so maybe that’s your complex creating the narrative. Which conversation got “twisted? Then “twisted to your own needs with ad hominem attacks” accompanied by an ad hominem attack of your own devising... ”Daily Mail.” I didn’t assert you read the Daily Mail. You did. You cited it as the source of an argument you made and defended several times. I took you at face value. But then you dig a pit of hypocrisy by asserting “you people” as “sheeple” who trust the BBC and ‘other news outlets’, an “ass”umption on your part. You complained about people on social media asserting they’re more intelligent than anyone else as a faux ad hominem and logical fallacy. You then assert your phd and how many languages you speak. Interesting. You complained that people “defame others who have a different viewpoint” and alleged that I “throw insults” (didn’t happen) as a mark of someone who has lost the argument and then insulted my intelligence as an ad hominem attack, immediately after stating that my perfectly comprehensible comment was “my first language - gibberish” compared to your phd and your five languages. Then you fabricated a work of fictional nonsense about my “trolling” (which given your interest in IT and internet you would have at least thought you’d understand the definition of, instead of using it as a meaningless generalistic pejorative swipe by a MSM hack trying to sound down with the kiddies), “defaming” (false allegation) and “wasting hours of my time” on social media sites I don’t even own accounts for. How very strange and totally off topic to whatever it was you were trying to argue and deeply unhappy that anyone disagreed..

That is a lot of investment; when they were going bust (late 80's - early 90's), I was talking to a guy who made injection moulding dies, and he was charging £10K for dies a lot smaller and less complex than those used for the sheets of parts used for model kits; he estimated the costs at over £40k per sheet, and a usable lifetime of 10,000 uses before they would start leaking plastic. It was well known within the model making community at the time, that Airfix had not saved money to have enough new dies made, and that they were trying to eke out 50K uses of each one. You could see how worn the dies were by the amounts of scree on later model kits compared to earlier ones; some kits, like the Lancaster bomber, were so bad at the end, they were almost impossible to build without dedicated use of a stanley knife, a keen eye and a steady hand. The last Lancaster I bought was so bad, that in the end I trashed it, and made a "falling out of the sky in flames" model; the SuperFortress kit was another that really suffered; the fuselage wouldnt fit together without some careful trimming of scree and the turret mountings.

Used to spend many hours as a kid wishing I could be bothered to paint them after I'd finished making them ..

Sophiasky

I remember when I was child (about 40 years ago) going to our local Pram & Toy Shop and buying these kits with my brother - I never realised that they were still being made. I might buy a set for my 10-year-old son for a Christmas present, though will have to check the recommended age (?). Thank you. I was going to buy the Red Arrow Folland Gnat set, however, the reviews on Amazon are not good - problem with the paint not sticking properly and peeling off. Perhaps the reviews for the other sets will be a little better.
