The shrinking size of crisp packets (from a multipack)

Posted 3rd Dec 2023
Can anyone remember what the weight value used to be for walkers crisps from a 6 pack multipack pre shrinkflation say, 2019/2020. I see nowadays an individual packet is 25g, but when you open it, it's barely 1/3rd full. This is appalling. Pretty sure it used to be 28g or 30g

They have been 25g for decades.

Single serve standard bags outside of multipacks has ranged from 28g - 34.5g throughout the years.

They should make it illegal for manufacturers to have oversized food wrappings as this creates too much waste materials for landfills.

Only 10% of the crisp packet is actually crisps, the rest is air. The should be made to reduce the packaging to reflect the size of the contents!

Without all the air, you'd get a packet of broken crisp bits.

CRISP PACKETS !!! Heck when I was young you could chuck out the little packet of salt and use the empty packet as a bin bag, they were so big.

A friend of mine worked for Shorts and had access to the calibrated scales (they weigh each part used in the construction of a plane and add it all up - every gram counts!). He weighed a packet of his crisps (Tayto) and they where a few grams shy of the mark, every packet. He wrote to them and explained the calibrated scales he used. They sent him a full box of crisps and remarked that they would check the calibration of their machines.

McCoys seem to be the most noticeable victim of "shrinkflation". Opening a packet reveals about a dozen crisps!

Walkers multipacks in Xmas flavours in tesco are now 5×24g bags whilst standard flavours are 6×25g bags. So 120g total instead of 150g and the same price

I knew a retired printer in York many many years ago. He worked for a well know (large) printer that made wrappers for chocolate bars. He told me that very often the sizes would be reduced. This has been going on for over 70 years at least.
