Are laptops dying out?

You're right, the LG IPS display used on this it's very good quality and has very high brightness (364 cd/m²). Found this user review from the states.

Using this for Photoshop and lightroom for work would be just perfect! Heat

Some people just want a big screen and aren't fussed so much about the GPU. Some of you on here are obsessed with GPUs but note that most just don't care.

Yeah for this price, having a 17inch chassis, and only an MX150, doesn't really add up Surely you could do better It's not necessarily bad for the price, but if you're going to £600 and you're fine with a big laptop, you may as well just look for one that has a GTX 1050

Acer Predator XB271HU 27 inch Wide screen Monitor WQHD, ZeroFrame, G-Sync, 165Hz(OC), IPS £492.99 Amazon

I am aware that this monitor has been as low as £450 delivered a few weeks ago but this is still a decent price.

I paid £609 for mine over a year ago and aside from the stand taking up half my desk I've had no problems with it. If you're looking to save money and don't care about IPS then by all means purchase the TN panel version.

Then it must be great. I paid this much for TN 2 years ago.

Nope this is my model its the IPS version

I havel this screen. Unless you dont mind TN panels, which show color like crap, and you game only, and you must have 1440p, this is ok. But now there are way better screens for the price. You dont notice downsides while gaming over DP port. View over hdmi is bad :)

Or dont wait for the 4K version. No GPU can do 4K 144hz on AAA games in the next few year. hell even the 4K model cant do 4K 144HZ with HDR properly. so its not worth getting until they fix that with new revision.

Yes, this is the B3-A40, has been £135 back in February.

Oh, and these flip up so you can break off temporarily and see what's going on in the real world. And they have a PSVR type head band. I hardly notice there is anything on my head. I say again HOT! :D

Got one 2 weeks ago from amazon USA. Worked out at 240 delivered including duties and taxes. It's awesome. I went for this over others as it is the lightest. Other than that they are all much the same except the Samsung one which is double the price for only slightly better resolution. It has the middle FOV, but honestly all of them are like wearing goggles cos you are.... wearing goggles. But they are magic vr goggles that take you to another world. I went from Oculus DK 2 to this and this is easily twice as good. Much exceeded my expectations. Virtually no screen door effect. Good black colour rendering. 90hz. 2 vr controllers. No external cameras. One USB 3.0 and 1 x HMDI needed. Fantastic. Recommended. HEAT FROM ME!

I never vote cold but I think these will come down to under £200 soon due to all of the competition in the market.

The acer model is the worst of all the current mixed reality headsets.

COLD alternative models are cheaper, this isn’t a good deal

Completely agreed! I didn't even notice that it was a refurb. I hold my hands up, bad deal

Would be 'ok' if brand new, but a refurb for £1200 with those specs is not great tbh.

The 6700 is perfectly fine for gaming and will be for a while yet. The SSD is a bit measly for the price though.

A 1 TB HHD is standard in pretty much every gaming laptop.

Decent price. Free click & collect or 3£ for delivery.

Just put myself down for one. Hope it lives up to expectation! Thanks OP.

I have this machine with SSD and it is rapid for the light use I require it for. From start-up to having Chrome up and ready to go is 20 secs. I'm not sure what its like with the listed HDD but it may be worth finding one with SSD for rapid speed. Its definitely worth it.

So the one posted before with the 120 ssd is better?

Ordered thanks. Will be fine for daughter. :-)

Good price I think for a 15.6" 8GB RAM 256GB SSD, with i5 8250U processor. I've ordered one, hoping for reassurance that I've spent my hard-earned wisely! (skeptical)

Are you unhappy with it and now returning the item? Was just about to order, it now not available.

Does anybody know if the 30 day cancellation period starts from when the item is available for collection in store, or from when it is actually collected?

Cool. Sorry for the attitude....

Ahah no, I don't want to buy it now I just wanted to know how the performance was for future reference as this kind of laptops comes on sale frequently

Im an old guy and use an old Dell Inspiron 9400 17" 2gb RAM 300gb HDD, and find it great for what I use it for. I also have an I7 15" which I very rarely use as I prefer the bigger screen. . I'd like to buy this as a replacement for the Dell, will this be as good or better? or is it a waste of money.

Upgrade to SSD, replace windows with Ubuntu and it will be ok for me. ;)

I had one of these and the hinges snapped damaging the casing after about 8 weeks. Took it to a computer store and they said the amount it would cost to repair, it's cheaper to get a new one

I have been googling and can't find out if this has a soldered on CPU. If it doesn't and the CPU is upgradable this looks a great buy. appears to have bga CPU or soldered on.

Mine was being delivered to store for tomorrow. Just had an email "request for refund". Phoned them, apparently its gone missing from the delivery and they won't be getting another one in stock. Sigh. Useless.

Just my luck...arrived today, opened it up and...there's a key missing! Not in the box, just missing... Back it goes. This is now the third one returned - one to Tesco (faulty), two to PC World (wrong one delivered - twice!). I'm going to look for something else...

currently on an Acer aspire (i5) which I have owned for 7 years. Screen is perfect although I could do with a proper Acer battery to replace my generic one

There seems to be a lot of conflicting information about the screens on these Acer aspire 5’s. The one everyone says is dire is the TN panel which from what I can see the mx150 variant doesn’t come with, Tesco list this as having the ips display whereas all other aspire 5’s they have doesn’t make mention of it. As noted here the ips variant is actually decent ,if anyone actually has this model from Tesco’s it would be good to get confirmation it does actually come with that ips panel?

Good deal. Much better than the MSI someone posted last week.

Go for this or is a premium of £130 worth it for:

Depends the type of work you are going to be doing on it. Pay no attention to people saying get gaming one they are more bulky. I can see fair few people don't know anything moaning about it not being latest gen if you are going to moan then it should be that it is U version but look at the price this is good offer compared to what else is about. I would suggest staying clear of HP unless you go for the series like elitebook

Sound is not loud enough. Battery runs down even when plugged in to charge. Takes forever to recharge. My lenovo p2 is faster. Lasts a good while watching vids with the brightness @ 66%. Usb socket needs a good usb cable with good locking catches for the plug.

How would this compare to an Amazon fire 10 hd?

Agreed, i've been looking at these for a friend, and searching specs etc, and every site seems to have a different take on what should be listed/reported, but as you said, as the manufacturer, they could present the information better! From what i can work out with this one, and i better be right! is it has a MicroSD slot, Max 128gb microSDXC card, it has a side microusb port for charging / data transfer, and an additional microusb port at the top under the little cover that is purely for data transfer User Manual is here... Manual/User Manual_Acer_1.0_A_A.pdf?acerid=635223449163050210

You would think if you were a manufacturer you would list the full spec. All tablets ideally should have an mini HDMI port, a USB port, and a micro USB port and a card expansion port/slot. All I can find /see is a micro USB!

Not really true. Will handle far better games than those. Ryzen is ideal for people who want decent performance and battery life and may wish to play games from time to time. Managed to play quake champions on my i5 6200u at lowest res this would probably manage it at lowest settings at 1080p which would do me dandy.

A potato is faster than a 940m :p Seriously: the Vega 8 is 10-20% slower than a gt 1030 entry card. If you play anything remotely modern at 720p/1080p.... don‘t buy it for gaming. If you like Age of Empires 2 & Command and Half-life 2, go ahead:)

Better gpu than my 940m too

Woah 7700 pass mark! Don't know about the graphics or battery life. Smashes my i5 6200u!

No problem, happy to help. Yes definitely true that some applications will benefit from a faster SSD (especially when multitasking) however the most important thing for multitasking is generally RAM capacity & speed. 4GB isn't a lot once you start opening 10+ tabs on Chrome, but for a few Chrome tabs and several other applications (music player, messenger, etc) it's been absolutely fine for me. It's definitely something to be aware of though as remember the RAM is non-upgradable but since you said you only wanted it for basic travel use anyway I doubt that's a problem and it's a really fantastic laptop for travel that's for sure. As for heat it's very impressive, especially considering it's fanless. I run Hwinfo64 software 24/7 on all PC's I use to log useful data & on this laptop the highest CPU temp recorded was 68C which is very good imo. The outer case gets warm but not particularly hot, infact i'd say it stays cooler than most laptops i've ever used tbh. Hopefully some useful info there for you anyway (y)

Great thx. Am going to get it and do the SSD upgrade for storage plus the hope that it will run more smoothly. The differences between the SSD and the build in card is not only on the read/write speed (not big)but also on how that is been done. I read an nice example, it is like driving with same speed in a three lane motorway (ssd) vs a narrow one lane road. On a single task not much of a deal but when multitasking makes a difference. However never had a chance to test that though. I need it for basic travel use and i hope it doesn't overheat a lot. Thanks again 💪

Yes i've upgraded to a M.2 SSD & it's considerably faster on benchmarks eg Read/Write ~500/500 vs ~200/100. Not really much of a noticeable difference in general usage though tbh. I am a pretty heavy user with lots of applications running even when I'm just web browsing and it's been fine for that. Really good actually. Just go in with realistic expectations and you'll be pleased. It's not a powerhouse but perfectly capable

Has anybody upgraded this with an SSD drive. I wonder how big is the difference compared to the stock version. Also for those who are using it can you please comment if it is fast enough for basic use (like listening to music, while surfing on the net and working on MS Office).

Note says. Your notebook must be plugged in as it activates the battery first time.
