Thanks Happy!

happy2014

I have switched surge protected ext behind my TV unit. I just think if you not using them all then safer for the others not to be on. I have spare socket available on it, for eg. The vac, fan it may just be me but for peace of mind I prefer switched.

Thanks Packard!

Save power / safer / doesn’t cause wear on some products with the PSU being on all the time

I'm clueless when it comes to electricity, so can I ask what are the disadvantages of not having individual switches?

MASTERPLUG 10A Type 2 Socket Electric Vehicle Charging Cable 5M £139.99 at Screwfix

One for the EV owners. I've just ordered a Peugeot e208 and to my horror there is no granny charger supplied with the car. This one is a 5 Metre but for £20 more you can get the … Read more
tucka20

That's a really good price. I've just sold a standard 5m cable on eBay (surplus to requirements as I had 2) for £120 so get a new one for this is great. For people asking how long it takes to charge, my 10a charger pulls 2.2kw from the wall and of that, 2kw goes into the battery. In my Outlander, that's just under 5 hours to charge. My Leaf 24kw is around 10 hours (it doesn't have full capacity and never gets fully drained). I wouldn't want to charge an i-pace or Tesla from a 10amp charger!

terriclarkfan

If you'd only need the full 10m occasionally, keep most of it wound up with a couple of releasable cable ties but leave however much you need every day at each end loose. That way it'll be no harder to deal with day to day, but you'll be able to release the full length easily when you need it.

scorcher

As I tried to explain above its not about blowing home fusebox, it is about the plug overheating if there is a bad connection. Yes things like kettles take as much power but they arent so likely to have the cord yanked and left on full power continuously for hours unattended.

edddeduck

For people who wonder why these aren’t included is because they are an emergency item. You never really use these for any kind of regular usage. You can use them when your home charger breaks, or you end up somewhere where there isn’t a rapid charger nearby. It’s also useful if you massively miscalculate and end up with not enough range to make a charger and you need to find a local shop or house and give them a fiver to put enough charge to make it to a charge point. It’s the same as having a spare Jerry can in your boot just in case you run out of fuel. I’ve driven 50k miles using an electric car in the last 2 years (100 mile a day commute) and driven the length of the UK on holiday a few times during these two years. I've used a granny charger only a few times since I bought it. Once at my parents home in a rural location to top up and at my home for a few days when my home charger broke. Normally you’ll never need it but you’ll be so pleased you have one in the boot when you do.

Fuzz

Power output on all UK 3 Pin granny chargers is 10A as far as I know so you should never really blow your home electrics as your home wiring and sockets should be rated to 13A. For perspective a 10A granny charger will pull about 2.3kW at 230V (10A x 230V = 2300W) which is similar to what some kettles or fan heaters will pull. A lot of the UK power grid is actually 242V which would mean 2.42kW at 10A I use the granny charger at work with a 20m extension reel and have no problems regardless of the weather as my extension reel is IP rated. At home I use a Myenergi Zappi EV charger which is about 30A (7kW) rated. It can throttle the charge rate to maximise using the electric generated by my Solar Panels and also has integrated scheduling so you can charge the car cheaper if you have a E7 electric tariff and can be controlled via its app. In my opinion one of the better ones on the market available via the OLEV grant. NOTE: Since July 2019 only smart chargers are available via the OLEV grant due to government changes to the scheme.

I agree the outer casing is cheaply made and splits causing the cable to get trapped between both halfs.

rizo9

I have one of these and it’s not the easiest to wind it and pull out.

PM13

With reels you should unwind when using to stop them overheating Anyone thinking about using for home office etc have a read below. Why unwind the cable completely at high load? Where electricity flows, the use of electrical devices also generates heat. If more electricity flows through the use of several consumers, more heat is also generated. If electrical cables are wound up like the cable of a cable reel, the heat is naturally difficult to dissipate. To avoid overheating the cable, it should always be completely unwound from the drum body. Cable rewinding devices, such as cable reels or cable boxes become extremely hot in the core of the coiled cable. Therefore temperature switches, also known as overheating protection, are mandatory. Without this mechanism and the overheating protection, the cable insulation can melt and lead to destruction - or in the worst case - to fire of the rewinder. brennenstuhl.co.uk/en-GB/selection-of-themes/safety/unwind-cable-completely

Of course this is sarcasm but its true. Also, yes agreed about safety (specifically on children) but do you aware that 90% of appliances do not have earth cable in wire, simple is - they build/made/produced outside of the UK. In that case safest point dropped and method above work perfectly.

sheffield788

I agree with you, this is why I suggested I don't encourage people to do it.

Crooklar_.

Pushing down the earth plug to put in a two pin plug is dangerous! it doesn’t means EU plugs are in inherently dangerous, especially when used in an EU socket. The earth plug is there to stop you getting electrocuted.

sheffield788

May be the safest, but this does not means the European ones are not safe too. I have 2 devices used exactly the same as the other person suggested. One is a TV box, plugged like this since 8 years ago, another one is my laptop charger. I had no intention of using them like this, I just did not have an adaptor and tried it like this out of curiosity, with the view to get an adaptor soon. Not encouraging anybody to do it by the way.

Crooklar_.

I hope that’s sarcasm. And you don’t need to be explained why British plugs are the safest on the world.

Why do you even need that? Most items have a switch on them or don't consume any power if not plugged into the product itself. For example my monitor has a power switch. As does my pc. As does my printer. As does my external amplifier. All the other things like the ethernet switch, raspberry pi I need left on anyway. I've never really needed individual switches ever. The time it takes to press the switch you could always unplug it.
